@@hrfunk another unusual way with a 50 Thompson in renegade or Hawken was shooting a 50 caliber sabot with a 44 caliber bullet. Yes I know it was 1-48 twist but the hornady 240 grain xtp in a sabot was the ultimate.i was using sabots before anyone heard of the word like 1990.it was so accurate it needed to be drilled for a base for a scope.and I tried through research in my Thompson and modern in lines like encores two 50 caliber round balls.yes two .both patched and lubed stacked tightly together. When watching the video I spotted (your?) dog to the right rear of the jeep that was slightly to the left and rear of you. He was absolutely motionless and I started thinking you were filming from a staged scene. Finally he/she moved, but I've never seen a dog outside that would remain that motionless for as long as it did. My T/C Hawken is a 1980 that I made from a kit while stationed on a submarine tender in New London, Ct. Still have it and shoot it on a regular basis. It has a special memory attached to it. We had an informal black powder club on the ship and would go out together to shoot. I had just finished the Hawken and was just starting to shoot BP. We had a target set up at 50 yards and shooting off-hand. I got distracted somehow and left my ramrod in the barrel. Found it in two pieces, one on each side of the target. My shipmates presented me with a new ramrod at quarters a week later, the ramrod had an attached brass sign about 5 X 7 inches in size that read "REMOVE BEFORE FIRING".

My barrel is blued, but “browning” was a more traditional finish that was used on these rifles in the 18th/19th century. Some manufacturers still use browning in an effort to preserve the authenticity of their rifles.

The very early J&S Hwakens rifles from 1825 to 1832 were flintlocks, but after 1832 almost all Hawken rifles produced, either J&S Hawken or S Hawken, were percussion lock guns. After 1835 one had to special order a flint version of the Hawken rifle. The Lyman Great Plains rifle is the closest modern production gun to an authentic Hawken. But you can still order a Hawken kit from the Hawken Shop for around $1400.

I used to own a nice .45 TC Hawken like yours (in the early 1970's) & it was a very nice rifle. I vaguely remember shooting 3 consecutive shots offhand at a 100yd target & the 3 shots could be covered by a quarter c to c!!! An "act of God" for sure, as I've never been a very good shot! I could not have done that from a bench with a scope! I also shot an "act of God" 5 shot group at 100yds offhand with my custom made .58 Andy Fautheree Hawken rifle (score of 40), the 5 shots being 6 1/2" c to c, AND 4 of the 5 shots were 2 5/8" c to c! I was in my 30's then & now am 78. My shooting "haydays" are all but gone now, as the only shooting range I could afford to shoot at last year terminated all of a sudden. """Jesus is not a """name."""#b that's #2 things you're wrong on already lets go for a third. #c there is no where in the old bibles that's pre- King James Version that even mention hell . In the new king james version there's only the mention of the lake of fire. But it doesn't say sinners go first or anything along those lines. Perhaps you fell and forgot the bible has been re----written so many times the church lost count. ,or that 14 whole chapters were re---moved by the catholic church. That's right you haven't read 14 chapters of the bible #14 is a lot of stuff. Why were they re-----moved to make the bible a weapon and a tool for the catholic church . That is the truth . like it or not. You should try and find an old 1600 bible . Or older it will blow your mind , it's so vastly different than today's version. They are very very expensive for a ------reason. truth cost bucks. Germany and italy and france have a lot of old bibles sitting around in people's homes. $$$$$$$ you'd be amazed at prices like 20,000 to 100,000 dollars a piece. In Genius you'll see where God made man and woman from the clay of the earth ,and breathed into them and they became man and woman . So why the Rib from Adam???The church changed that so women would be sub-servant to men , ahhhhh ,no women priest ,total domination by men. Yes that's a fact. So don't be getting all I'm smart and I'm going to save you .Better study up more or talk to me more .I'll save you. You have been praying to nothing your whole life. I know this is going to hurt you , and I'm sorry to do it to you . But Jesus Christ is not a name it's a Title. It's Greek for "Savior Anointed"". His real name was they think """"""Yeshua ""So all those prayers and thinking were for nothing. All your life talking to someone or something that doesn't exist. And don't blame me either .Blame the catholic church. Everything I have told you is a fact , and the truth .. You may Goggle any of it , to verify my words. The greatest trick Beelzebub ever played on mankind was """"JESUS """"" .Now your eyes are open ,hope you realise I may have saved you from being embarrassed when you do meet "God". And praying to anyone besides "God" is a sin !!!!!! Bible says it over and over and over . And all these years you have been praying to a false "God" You have made Beelzebub stronger by every prayer you uttered. Tricked just like all the other millions of sheep ,who just took the word of the church. Go forth now sword in hand with the word and truth. You can email me if you like it's on my site . Peace P.s. that's over #3 you lost but you won ,your eye's are now open. ,it will be your damnation to pray to Jesus ever again since you know the truth now. If it still has the original barrel, it should work with either one. T/C used a middle of the road rifling twist that was intended to work with either a patched round ball or a conical bullet. The weight of that leather sling attached to the mid area of the barrel, swinging the little bit that it is, m a y y yyyy be effecting the accuracy. Or? You re the shooter. You would know. Maybe I m just seeing something that just aint so.

What kind of rear sight do you have installed?
@hrfunk5 жыл бұрын
It’s a long discontinued sight that was manufactured by Thompson/Center. Off the top of my head, I can’t even remember where I found it.

@@hrfunk okay thanks. I just got a traditions mountain rifle and looking to upgrade the sight. Awesome video sir. Keep up the good work
@hrfunk5 жыл бұрын
Thank you! I believe Lyman still makes an aperature sight that should work with your rifle. Check Brownells. They should carry them. Good luck!

Has anyone ever told you you sound like Obama? Awesome video by the way I’m actually looking to get one of these rifles in the near future
@hrfunk6 жыл бұрын
No, nobody has told me that before! Good luck finding a T/C Hawken. They are out there, and most of the time you can find one in good condition for a reasonable price.
@bds1230876 жыл бұрын
I recently found one at a pawnshop for 300 bucks in pretty good condition does that sound like a decent price?
@hrfunk6 жыл бұрын
It sounds pretty good to me. The last ones that were sold new were up around $700.

Shooting black powder firearms is great. And in a lot of states its the only guns a non violent felon is allowed to shoot or hunt with.

My T/C shoots 6 inch groups at 50 yards. Not very good. Deer just laugh at me.
@hrfunk6 жыл бұрын
Ooh. I bet it will do better than that with some TLC. What condition is the bore in?
@stevehuffman74535 жыл бұрын
Have you experimented with different loads and projectiles? If PRB, have you tried different patching materials and thicknesses? For conicals ... If your barrel has a 1:60 or slower twist, forget conicals, your barrel is designed for patched round balls, and will never stabilize a conical. If you have a 1:48 or 1:24 twist, start at the minimum recommended powder charge and work your way up to the maximum, until you get the accuracy you want. Try different bullet weights, too. Some rifles prefer a lighter bullet, some prefer a heavier one. Oh, if your rifle has the 1:24 twist, forget PRB, that is too fast, and will throw the ball off target.

6in accuracies and at 50 yards the deer is still in my fridge, just no magic shots thru heavy timber.
