I bought a Dixie Tennessee Mountain Rifle in 1979 and a Lyman great Plains Rifle in 1981, both in .50. Thousands of RB's since then and they still shoot great. More accurate than I can see these days. Nice video. Buncha guys having a day at it.

Built a Hawken from a Lyman kit many years ago, love it when I am at the range and out shoo the kids with their Ar's and all sorts of optics. Then again, a .50 make big hole, so it does not take many rounds to carve out a good group.

A very good video I fell in love with the Hawken rifles when I was 10 years old, watching the movie "Jeremiah Johnson". In 1988 I bought my first Hawken from Ardesa (Traditions) in caliber 50. Now I have the Hawken Rocky Mountain of Pedersoli in caliber 54 and a Hawken Woodsman of Ardesa, also of 54. I have bought all the books in the United States about the Hawken rifles ("Thanks Amazon") and I want to write a book in Spanish about these rifles. Greetings from Spain.

I built my own a few years ago. I wanted something different. It has a .54 Green Mt. barrel and a Siler Flintlock. Early on, some Mountain Men didn't trust percussion caps. I also made it full stock. I made the hardware (buttplate, sideplate, thimbles, trigger guard and nosecap), from steel. Good shooter.

those Green Mountain barrels are great I have a Long Range Hunter .50 Cal. Barrel on a old T/C Hawken and it is deadly ,I took a Big doe at 280 yards with it shooting open sights off hand ,double lung hit.I gave that rifle to my son
@OldJoe2126 жыл бұрын
@@stevendeatley4878 wow, that's great. One thing I like is that they drill the bore before they cut the flats, so the bore is dead center. Hope your son has as good fortune as you.

@@OldJoe212 Thank you,he has taken a few deer with it ,when I went to our local rifle range with it just before hunting season.the range was packed with hunters useing inline rifles with scopes and I was the Butt end of all the jokes being the old weirdo with a side hammer,lol after shooting my 1st 50 yard shot dead center thru a quarter size hole ,I put the next shot thru the same hole then I started putting all my bullets in a walnut sized bullseye at the 100 yard line ,and I asked the one guy who had been talking the most trash why he was using a rest for his scoped inline.lol because i was shooting off handthe whole time one guy hollered and asked why diddn't I put a scope on that rifle and some body yelled back at him and asked does it look like he needs one.lol .I had to rib them guys a little ,and when they asked why I wasn't useing the shooting rests .I told them those tables was hard to find where I hunted and too heavy to carry with me. the first deer I got with that rifle was on the last day and I had hunted all day and walked out of the mountain to a friends house who fixed me a hot cup of coffee and when he walked out with me he peeked around the end of his house ,then he motioned for me to walk over and he whispered "shoot the little one'' there was a big Doe and her yearling out beside his barn .so I dropped the smaller deer in its tracks and he had a old T/c grey hawk in his hands ,but he never fired ,he just said if you can get that thing reloaded I will use it mine won't shoot that far just when I handed him the rifle the old Doe ran.

I picked up a well worn CVA Mountain Rifle, which is more like a Hawken then the actual marketed CVA Hawken rifle. The lock was worn out so I replaced the lock with one from L & R. It now shoots great and I redid the barrel/stock to go with it and have been very surprised for a CVA how good it really is.

In their day, the Hawken was as fine a rifle as any in existence and highly prized. As rifles progressed from the flintlock through the Kentucky rifle design, the Hawken emerged as the one that best delivered accuracy, range and larger calibers. Of course, modern technology has greatly improved the muzzle loading rifle through inline systems. The Hawken is now a relic that - as a shooter - is still lots of fun, but it provides only marginal reliability.

"Ach du lieber, mein schatz"! Wunnerful video! How my ol' (80!!) heart aches to shoot my custom .58 Hawken again before I pass on (like "croak"!)! Mine was made for me by Andy Fauthuree (of Muzzle blasts Magazine) in 1968 when I was a 28 year old bachelor. MASTER craftsmanship!!! Beautiful Curly Maple stock; 32" × 1&1/8" Bill Large barrel (round ball twist); hook breech; gorgeous case hardened set triggers; gorgeous case hardened AL Osterman coil spring caplock; 2 candy striped ramrods; brass trim. Yes, it's a "HEAVYWEIGHT" (great for very heavy powder charges if you want - from "mices" to "beek" Mooses!!) & really "hangs in there"! The barrel is a very very beautiful satin finish rust brown, perfectly EVEN in tone from breech to muzzle! Never have seen another even close to its beauty! My best OFFHAND 5 shot group at 100 yards was 6&1/2" overall, with 4 of the shots in a 2&3/8" or 2&1/2" group!!! I was never a great shooter either! Had to be God's predestination for my shooting career! Paid in total $300! Wish I would have ordered a Hawken "flinter" as its mate!!! "Gesundheit" und pass da "Lutefisk" poleaze!
