I have to say I’m an intermediate player and I’ve never tried to learn the modes as they seemed a little complicated and advanced for me but as I was playing through this track I was trying to use the D Major Pentatonic with D major notes added in but I noticed instead of the C# on the high E string 9th fret the chords were “forcing” me to the C on the 8th fret. I started thinking about it and realized it was a flat 7, looking it up on my scale app I realized holy crap this is the Mixolydian scale, this backing track literally taught me the Mixolydian mode! At this point I hadn’t looked at the description notes for the track, after i realized it was mixolydian I did look at the notes and it confirmed it. I was so stoked to realize that and learn it! I can’t Thank you enough. I’m now a huge fan of your tracks and love em! Going to tackle Dorian next!! Again Thank You !!🙏🏻
@GaryBradleymusic Жыл бұрын
There's a simple solution to this chord sequence. Modal thinking not needed here. Chords are D maj | C Maj | G Maj so use the major and pentatonic scales for each chord e.g. The C# doesn't work because the C and G scales have a C natural. Whatever song you play major or minor, learn the chords first and solo from play their corresponding scales. Learn basic arpeggios too. Mix up the order of things! There are times when it won't work over fast chord changes and altered jazz chords but it's a good rule of thumb! Hope this helps! 😁
@epiphone278 Жыл бұрын
Hi Gary agreed the C# doesn’t work, which is why I think the mixolydian scale kind of naturally popped into my fingers. I wasn’t thinking modally it just kind of happened. It just made me curious, and when I looked up what notes I was playing it was mixolydian and then I looked at the notes from the creator, and they also suggested mixolydian (among other scale types.). It was just kind of neat how it came about.
@t-guitar Жыл бұрын
Wow, I'm really pleased that you unlocked the Mixolydian mode with the help of my track!!! That's a great story, I'm very happy for you! You got it just right, and you got it right by your hearing too! Great achievement! I'm planning a Dorian Track for the next weeks and maybe a Lydian one, I don't have much of them yet, but I will also tackle the other modes over time. 😁✌️🎸🎵
@epiphone278 Жыл бұрын
Thanks again for the great tracks! It’s definitely boosted my confidence to learn a mode when I wasn’t even trying to! The modes always confused me and still do to some extent but I now feel like I have a much better grasp on it because of that track! Thanks again and looking forward to more tracks and more learning!! 😊

“Can’t you see” is another one. With a different beat it can be “Sweet Home Alabama”. Use the D pentatonic for a few passes. Then switch to Dm / F pentatonic for a while (get used to the F note). Then switch to the G pentatonic! Each switch takes a few notes to get used to, but they work!

So Im confused. Wouldnt this be in the key of G since it has both C and D major along with G?
@t-guitar Жыл бұрын
Yes, this is correct, you can play G Major over this chord progression 👍 But the tonal center of this backing track is the note D. So I prefer to play D Mixolydian (the same notes as in G Major) over it, it is just another point of view on the notes ✌️
@Donald6309 Жыл бұрын
@@t-guitar So you'd define it as the tonal center because it's the most common chord in the progression or just because it was your "target" degree? I know a good amount about theory, but I could never wrap my head around tonal centers.

Yes, that's both correct 👍 You can just start your G Major Scale at the 5th note then you have D Mixolydian scale ✌️🎸

same exact scale - just which note you're focusing on... that's kinda what people mean when they say "playing over the changes" - it's what you're focusing on note wise. Think of it as ketchup and spaghetti sauce - where do you want the FOCUS on the flavor to be? Same basic ingredients.

Playing a B minor pentatonic over this sounds great but wondering why it works with a C chord thrown in there. Can any music theory folks opine?
@t-guitar6 ай бұрын
Because the major scale and Mixolydian scale differ only in the seventh, and the seventh is not included in the major pentatonic. So the pentatonic scale for D Major and D Mixolydian is the same.. And B Minor Pentatonic is equal to D Major Pentatonic. ✌️
@igorz3551 Жыл бұрын
Can this be in the key of F too??
@t-guitar Жыл бұрын
Hey, you can play the D Minor Pentatonic (same notes as F Major Pentatonic), but you should keep in mind that not all notes of D Minor are in D Mixolydian.. So you can play around with the minor third & major third of D, depending on what sound you want :) A general rule is that there are no rules ;) What sounds good, is good ✌️ Just experiment with different scales or approaches to this backing track :)

Why it doesn’t work with d major but g major
@t-guitar Жыл бұрын
Because there is no C chord in the key of D major. But you can play almost the same notes / scale of D major, except for the major 7th in D (note C#), which must be changed to the note C for this chord progression in D Mixolydian. So in D Mixolydian the only difference from D major is the lowered major 7th from C# to C. Note: You can play the D major pentatonic because the major pentatonic omits the 7th note.
