There are no mental issues. This is what the young brothers believe in, the street life. The problem is that in our community most of the trends start from the bottom, where-as with the white community it starts from the top. Therefore black folks who grow up in the suburbs try to be street because they have to be down. They want people to know that they can run these streets with the best of them. I read an article a few years back that stated over 50 percent of young blacks who grow up in the middleclass, live in poverty as adults. Why is that ? Is it because many don't see the big picture. Education is still the key but they see the movies, listen to the music they see people on the internet flashing money and singing about the life that they believe they are missing something until it's too late. I had a student who was bright, intelligent with the potential to do so much. I constantly told him this and would encourage him to get good grades be a high achiever. On graduation day I gave him a monetary gift, again with words of encouragement, told him if he needs anything to let me know. You know what he did on graduation night, got jumped in to a gang. Broke my heart. I pray this young brother doesn't get caught up, but I realized he was fascinated with that life and wanted to be a part of it.
