I have listened to a variety of this piece by Shostakovich many times. Maestro, Mr. Dutoit's performance is of modern sense, Mr. Mravinsky's performance contains great meanings of life, Mr. Bernstein never concedes as one of the greatest conductors ever, and Mr. Solti's performance still has great energy he acquired from his history with Chicago P.O. I myself love the performance of Maestro Mravinsky, but we can never forget the performance of Maestro Bernstein because his record of the performance in Japan of this piece is still evaluated as No.1 in the famous magazine, "Art of Records." Thank you. He-day from Japan

mrawinski est ok il est formidable le chef soviétique demeure insurpassable bonjour de Switzerland
Mravinsky was at odds with the piece; strangely ironic! Of course Bernstein got it - made it come alive as intended and filled with joy - he was a master at Shostakovich! - and the only one who didn't have his head buried in the score. Solti was energetic but where was the joy?

I think Solti and Mravinsky sees this as sticking the middle finger to the regime rather than full of joy. It was written, kind of, as a reaction to much criticised 4th symphony and political censorship and imprisonment of Soviet artists. If you think about it, both Solti and Mravinsky went through an incredibly tough time in Europe and came through the other side.
