When Dr. Bonfiglio Bini and his team at Binson debuted the Echorec in the 1950s, nobody could have predicted its near-immediate elevation to hallmark status, recognized as a paragon of both sound and design, utilizing an analog magnetic drum recorder over the tape-loop constructions common to the analog echo machines of the era. Under many iterations, the Echorec design would cease production by 1982, finding homes with countless historic artists known for their innovations in sound design, the most prolific being Pink Floyd. Now, more than two decades later, T-Rex has taken up the machinated mantel to painstakingly re-create the vaunted Echorec with exacting precision. Sweetwater’s resident studio scholar, Mitch Gallagher, takes us on a deep dive to uncover the multifaceted history of Binson’s Echorec engineering to settle once and for all how T-Rex’s meticulously crafted machine measures up to its iconic predecessor. Oil can delay. It's a sound that I have never gotten out of my head and they were extremely cool. I hope T-Rex sees this! I have their huge Replicator Tape Delay and will be getting this one too, the price is pretty steep though. I'll gladly buy the oil can delay if they ever decide to make one. It's not as iconic, but man is it a FIRE effect.

Great review! I've been waiting for this one to be released. That said, I'm waiting for a comparison between an original "organic" Echorec before dropping $2.1K for this unit. This sounds a bit like the Strymon El Capistan, which I sold on Ebay, as it sounded too "digital" for my tastes. All the best!

This is no doubt a 'really cool thing' and beautifully made. Trouble is, some manipulations would be required to get it to sound like the old ones; that or some severe neglect. Overall, T Rex has done a great job, but I'd only ask how hard could it be to modify it so as to engage both record heads with a three-way switch and balance the level going to each with a mix knob?

Apparantly you cant use it 100% wet which makes it about 100% less useful in the studio. Considering the price and XLR I/O its a huge oversight

Hey, Im new to audio and DI... Could you explain in brief why this is an issue?

@@kaekayyy2554 In mixing you usually want the FX separate to the dry vocal for example, this unit can only be used on the vocal in series and not in paralell, so in short you are tied when it comes to processing. For example you might want to eq the FX differently than the dry source track. Also you can not send multiple sources to it in a clean way which you would be able to if it was 100% wet, now the dry sound will be amplified in the paralell send and mess up the volume balance

Is it user servicable? Are heads and drums (including wires) available as parts?

The drum needs lubrication, not replacing like a tape. You don’t replace the drum. It should run for years and years. Original drums from the 60’s still work on those old Echorecs. Binson famously stated that they never had to replace or repair a drum. I don’t know if that’s true, but the drum is certainly the last thing you have to worry about on such a unit.

It's problem a touring/demo unit. Cosmetic blems are the norm for traveling demo units.

I think it’s on all of them. It’s just the nature of screen printing on dimpled surface. Mine has it too. Looks fine.
