Pulled the heads off a motor that had zero compression on one cylinder in a station wagon that an old guy had just drove over Washington pass pulling a fairly loaded 10k trailer in the early 90s. He was really hard of hearing and said “It’s making a funny noise”. One of the rods literally had a little ball of aluminum on the end of it around the wrist pin and it’d been slappin’ that cylinder wall silly for miles. Just thought I’d share a weird one too. I still can’t believe he’d made it to the shop, let alone over the pass. I bet Ed’s full of “one time” stories! Great content guys!!! 🏁💨

That happens in engines that ingest unfiltered air. Abrasive particulates cause the damage.

No one else has mentioned that, I’m going to ask Ed to comment as well. Thank you.

Oil bath air filters must be maintained. The oil in the filter will gum up and skim over with fine dust and become "dry" enough that dust will no longer stick to it. I'd bet this engine came with an oil bath air filter.

Ring Flutter. It's more synonymous with High RPMs but it can also come from excessive friction from overheating the engine and or poor lubrication in low RPM applications.

If the cross hatch is correctly in the cylinder & the cylinder oils correctly, the land, & that area on the ring is what wears.

Rings get worn like a "T" because the bore was not round and has a taper from top to bottom, so the rings open and close at gap and are wearing the areas of the ring lands from compressing and expanding every time the piston travels up and down the bores, not because the rings are hitting the lands. Friction and abrasion is not produced the way spoken, the cylinder wears first gets out of shape then the rings start wearing secondly after the bore gets out of shape and dirt can exacerbate the problem. Hes wrong. If the bore is round and no taper the ring will not move in and out of land so they stay more static in movement.
