Mani Iyer accompanied MLV only on her last stage of career, when the Shruthi of musician came down. Many vidwans had reservations in accompanying female artists due to the high shruthi of the vidwans. To the best of my knowledge Lalgudi Jayaraman did not accompany any female artist and it was rumoured that he was not bestowed with Sangeeta Kalanidhi by MA because he was reported to have refused to accompany M S on her getting the award. T N Krishnan had also not accompanied female artist. There are many mirudhangam artists who were reluctant to accompany women performers.

Why other community stalwarts like Yesudas has not produced sishyas from their communities? Sirkali Govindarajan should have taught/ brought many chettiar sishyas, but yesudass and sirkali taught their sons only. Dandapani Desikar, Madurai Somu should have groomed many sishyas from their communities but they didn’t. Brahmins on their own interest are learning without worrying about the financial prospects of Carnatic music. Only a very few become rich and famous thru Carnatic music but a large number learn of Brahmins for their interest and commitment towards culture and traditions. Instead of blaming one community, ask questions to other community stalwarts of yesteryears as to why they never bothered to teach music to students of their communities.

There is another heresay story. Mani Iyer was reported to have rejected the Padma Award when it was announced. His contention was that his guru was not bestowed with such awards and therefore he will not accept. But elderly musicians pleaded with him, that the award is a recognition to the Mirudangam and the art associated with that and he then reluctantly accepted it.

It's only hearsay. Awards like Padma are not announced before the awardee gives his confirmation that he will accept the honour bestowed. These awards are announced in the name of the President, hence any rejection of the award will be considered a big insult to the head of the state, so the govt will personally inform the awardee and then will announce it publicly only after the awardee gives his consent.

A person will be first given Padma Shri, then Padma Bhushan, then Padma Bhushan and then the highest honour Bharat Ratna. So if 1000 Padma Shri's are given, only 100-150 Padma Bhushan is given and then 10-15 Padma Vibhushan's are given and then there could be ONE Bharat Ratna which may be given or not given if no suitable person is found.
