Each of the rebuild kits are _ _ K307MK for the master kits w/o the ring and pinion. You’ll see that the two pinion bearings are different sizes and there’s a crush sleeve. I am also suspicious that the pinion bearing needs to be pressed on. Getting the tooth engagement and backlash correct is the magic that means putting everything together and pulling it apart multiple times. One thing I forgot to suggest is that since you will have to pull the axles out to rebuild it, you should consider replacing the axle bearings (I believe they too are pressed on the axle shaft) and axle seals as well. Doing everything to find out that an axle seal is now leaking is another heartbreaker,

Yes for sure

Did you find out what bearing and seal you needed? If so would you mind sharing the part numbers and where you got them I'm having same issue on my 04 sprinter 2500 thanks bro and cool vid
@ZimaletaMotors5 жыл бұрын
They sold me the wrong bearing seal, but you can get one from a parts store, just bring your original to compare the size, I will make a better updated video on this, but not sure when, I got a couple projects going, I hope you will watch some new videos, lots of valuable information

hey serge, im having the same problem with my 06 sprinter. the rear started making a rumbling noise then i think its seizing messing up my transmission. at first i thouught it was the trans so i changed it n now after swapping the new used trans,its acting the same way. around 20mph a crazy grinding noise is coming from the rear preventing me from accelerating,,,i dont want to mess up the new trans. what do you think?? is its the axle or drive shaft? do i change the whole axle out or just the bearing?
@ZimaletaMotors5 жыл бұрын
Sounds like a driveshaft but it’s a tough call

Where can you get that puller?

What happen to that newer sprinter you got a while back, work in progress?
@ZimaletaMotors5 жыл бұрын
Well the new sprinter is waiting for me, but my daily driver keeps breaking down and asking for my attention, then there is the wether, it’s been raining allot, and work, and fixing up the home, more projects then I can count

I would love to see you create a "common problems" video. Where you highlighted many of the problems to look for when buying a used sprinter

I have one like that it does not have that name on it, but now that you mentioned it, I will make one

Please, I am know expert, but I know enough to get myself into trouble, ha ha! I really have to address something that you said about the movement of the splined end of the pinion, where’re the yoke you removed attaches to. You said that “maybe this is normal. . . “ Please know that the pinion and the ring gear should have NO MOVEMENT ANYTHING CLOSE TO THAT, especially the pinion. Where the ring and pinion mesh need to have a very tiny window of backlash that is measured by only the movement of the ring gear. That much movement has caused the pinion to have sloppy, messy, gear engagement and may have destroyed the ring gear, possibly gouging out where the teeth mesh. At this point, you absolutely need to be completely sure that there are NO wear marks on the ring gear by opening up the pumpkin and checking it. If there is anything noticeable, the axle 100% needs to be removed and rebuilt or you will trash any, every new part you install. #2) With that amount of movement, the pinion crush sleeve (if there is one) has been trashed. This throws off the pinion to ring gear & backlash engagement and may have trashed it all. This can only be installed during a rebuild, and cannot be installed twice. It’s a once and done. #3) There are inner and out pinion gear bearings and races for that axle, that are significantly different in size. You may have gotten an inner bearing & race. #4) It looks like you may, also, have gotten parts for the dual-wheel rear axle. I believe that it is almost 1” larger in diameter. Again, that’s just from a cursory research. I know that of all people, you should be able to make whatever you put your mind to, work, but that axle, bearing, ring gear, all have to mesh up correctly, measured in 1000’s of an inch with a dial indicator. Also, that pinion needs to have a very specific amount of in-lbs of drag to ensure proper crush sleeve installation - and the axles, ring gear and carrier needs to be out of the housing to measure this. You, basically, are looking at - To fix this right, you need to rebuild that axle. If you don’t you run the risk of destroying everything you install in a VERY short time. Sorry.

A Timkin rebuild kit is about $300 and includes everything but the tools and experience necessary to rebuild that axle.

Thanks so much for this very detailed explanation, I will need to learn the terminology that has to do with it, and this is my first time really trying to mess with rear differential, so here’s the deal, I will just swap out the rear differential completely with another one from my parts van, that’s basically a free fix, but I will look into the rebuild kit in the future so that I can rebuild it later

ZIMALETA HOW TO SHOW & UNBOXING I don’t want to discourage you from anything. Again, I’m not perfect, nor am I a professional mechanic,, but I don’t want you spending time and money do be downhearted in the end. If you can pull the axle out, you should be able to rebuild it. Getting a proper backlash is something that I would be scared to do at home as I don’t have the proper dial indicator, nor the experience in setting up an axle. Especially one with a crush sleeve. My biggest concern is, with an inner and outer pinion bearings, if the outer is loose like yours is, the inner is probably bad, too, and BOTH bearings and races should be replaced.

You aren’t a mechanic, to remove the cone and replace the berings, you have to remove all the bolts in the front, like that you never can replace the bearing.
