This concept was at the absolute core of the first film - that life is just a series of choices as to how you pass your time, and when you look at all the different options you'll find very little difference between them. The fact that Trainspotting was about heroin addiction mattered less than the addiction itself, and how said addiction could be compared to the potentially bleak existence of an ordinary life. Everything, whether it be running, alcohol, sport, drugs, writing, sex, pugilism or even friendship, carries the hallmark of addiction.

Some stay hooked jumping in and out of institutions, some stay chained to clinics and or switch substances, some get sober, but MOST SIMPLY DIE!.. The truth is that most addicts/alcoholics die directly/indirectly during their active addiction and achieve no longterm sobriety!. If I only knew the he'll I'd endure once I became hooked on pills I was told were "non-addictve"after a car accident and I was naive enough at the time to think anything coming from a medical professional was Not like street drugs!.
