Usually when I see Sudden Death I prepare for the worst, because I'm scared everyone will just get steamrolled like in the beginning. Purple holding out was great though and cyan betraying the evil Rbase got me really excited! Amazing that they fought together against Rbase's partner in crime Zeusboy. Both deserved to win and I don't think you have to feel any regrets as either purple or cyan! Simply a splendid game and really a Sudden Death for the ages!

Just to clarify what i said in game, i forgot to tick the option in the lobby, so we had the 'old' system where you needed a market to have allied vision instead of having allied vision from the start like in ranked team games nowadays

Allies vision decreases the sneakiness in my opinion because people dont see where a king could be and see a proper area to pressure. Source: Hosted a bunch of games without it and it led to defensive play more over the years often than not.

I don't agree with T90 with his sentiment on HD. It had its problems but I still do well with it even today. (I just can't bring myself to buy yet another version of AOE2. I have about 5 now.) HD also got DE made...and made his whole career.

I don't remember what i said in this vid but to respond anyway... A version of AoE2 being released on steam in 2013 was huge and definitely helped saved the game from disappearing into oblivion for most. I'm a good example because I refound the game due to HD as did many back then. That said having spent 3-4k hours on HD between 2013-2015 and having made many memories with it, I can say with confidence it was as close to a cash grab as it gets. The price was very high for the main game and the DLCs, and the dev support and updates were virtually non existent. No servers, no quality of live additions, and it actually had less features than the classic version of the game that was still being played (which I found in 2015 and promptly left HD due to the better features/performance on a community maintained platform in Voobly... platform similar to gameranger). From 2015-2018 the growth of my channel and rebirth of the community was all hosted OFF of the official version of the game in AoEHD which I think says it all. I think somewhere in there Microsoft realized "shit we actually have a community growing now and HD is a huge mess... let's just scrap it and make a new product." I'm not trying to diminish people's enjoyment in HD or discourage them from playing it, I just think it's fair to say HD was a cash grab that failed on delivering a good product to fans while also saying it helped keep AoE2 alive at the same time. But beyond HD's accessibility (being on steam) I don't think it offered any value compared to what the community was able to manage on their own with third party mods/patches on Voobly. Both HD and Voobly were essential to where we are today that's for sure (and let me tell you, I have my issues with BOTH!) So yeah I'm grateful for HD but man oh man... was it bad compared to their sales numbers and what DE is today! Maybe it's a topic for a video someday... how we got to where we are!

I think the phrase "cash grab" threw me a bit, as it wasn't placed on the market and totally forgot about, it was just not heavily poured into but I am not so sure it was out of malice from the devs (I agree it fell short of expectations). We might not know (maybe you do know more than I do) all the behind the scenes and licences and all that crazy legal stuff and that was why it seemed to be high priced/low maintained. I would love a video on it. I just recently got back into your videos again as I saw DE was on sale and thought "I wonder how Tristian is doing?" (which sent me down a 16 video rabbit hole of commi games haha!) I do believe voobly made it better but its the chicken (AOE2 oldies aka me and the 1999 crew) vs egg (AOE2 "newbies" (streamers)) situation and then if that egg hatched a chick (HD) was born to make it normalised into the market again. As I remember a lot of my circle of friends were hyped a "remaster" of their favourite childhood game was out on steam (of all places) - remember we are old, when I was playing originally I was in my 30s we didn't have steam and all that back then :)

43:00 The eternal suffering. Looks like one of ancient greek punishments from myths, like for Prometheus or Sisyphus! I like multilayer "onion" walls, which we saw in this game. The yellows' and purples' were the most beautiful here. For yellow, though, only the first layer helped to delay the defeat. For purple it hepled him to survive long enough the onslaughts from orange, yellow and gray and take the second place. Mr. Grumpy has played it confidently since the imperial age. No trickle trebing, no doubts - and he earned the win. I think that his coordination with purples' defence was the key here. And the moves against gray and orange were sick.
