Table of content: Text appearing in table of contents | Caption showing in table of content in words

I recently encountered a problem with paragraphs showing an automatic table of contents in Microsoft words. Here is a solution I used to stop the text from appearing in the table of contents. If you encounter normal text showing in a table of contents, this video will guide you to eliminate the error. Similarly, if captions are shown in the table of contents, this same solution applies.

I have numbered paragraphs that I do not want in my TOC and I had created a style for them. For some reason it seems to be based on Heading 1 even though it shows in the style gallery details as based on List Paragraph....I'm confused...

Hi Cindy, please highlight those paragraphs and select "normal style" That should eliminate them from TOC. I had similar experience where the paragraphs appeared in my TOC

Alicerita, Thank you for this instructional video. Unfortunately, it doesn't seem to work on my doc. My first words of the paragraph are highlighted as heading 2 (bold, 12 pt Garmond) and the remainder of paragraph is labeled BODY TEXT andits own parameters are, no bold, 12 pt Garamond. Unfortunately, it still picks up the BODY TEXT. Is it because I need to label it Heading 5 or something that won't show in my TOC

Hi, I totally understand. After setting the style you want to use it is important you restart the MS word document. If you are working on an old document, you might have to first define the styles for each paragraphs again. I experienced something similar. For me I had an old document opened and when I set up the style, it remembered the memory of the opened one. Also, as you are writing, if you delete any paragraph before a heading or caption, I noticed from my document that automatically messed up the style. New tip: you can track the style in real-time as you write. 1.OPEN THE STYLE PANE (opens a drop down menu to the right side) 2. At the base of the style pane, SELECT STYLE IN USE This should show a colourful var to the left of the window. Different style will show different colour
