Waldner baiting Ma Lin into these long forehand rallys. Ma Lin’s signature diagonal forehand became his own worse enemy with impatience. Walder was truly a genius of table tennis.

If waldner played this good here, just think of how good he played when he was in his prime. There is no one, back then or even now who could play like waldner! Therefore he simply is THE greatest player of all time.
@jakobrosenberg47594 жыл бұрын
He had an unbelievable, incredible and unique playstyle! I hope some player in the world now or in the future can play like this and sort of maintain this talent and skill, but i dont think so. No swedish player anyway. Maybe, lets hope so. I am from sweden and play tanke tennis myself, so it feelt really good to say this, at last. Therefore i am proud of being swedish. Thanks for reading😁

@SwedenArise Also, at the end the commentators said that Ma Lin's performance was not bad, but Waldner won with his experience. In particular, he completely shut down Ma Lin's diagonal forehand loops.
@sergioaguilar29083 жыл бұрын
he keep ma lin guessing all the match were is he gonna place the ball and that took away ma lin iniciative to play his dangerous forenhand loops
@dickn.ormous10643 жыл бұрын
He didn't win with experience.Penholders don't have strong defense.If you have strong attack and can keep up with their short game(short forehand-long backhand footwork) you can beat them.Samsonov had plenty of experience but couldn't beat Ma in God knows how many attempts.

In this game, many of Waldner's rallies were to create strong side-spinning loops at the drop point, forcing Marin to constantly adjust her pace. Marin had difficulty adapting throughout the game.

Waldner was a penhold killer and probably one of the reasons why the Chinese gave up on penhold play and switched to the European penhold style which made them dominant again.

@pingpong9005 Waldner was in bad shape in the early 00's and still had some close encounters against him so beating him wasn't that much of a surprise. A guy like Samsonov was a more difficult opponent for Waldner.

Challanging a Penholder forehand to forehand was a brilliant strategy. Something the Chinese Coaches probably didn't anticipate very well. Although, Ma has and obvious advantage in speed, youth and footwork; its a reminder that strategy and psychology are a huge part of the game. The pressure of facing a 38 year old Waldner in the Olympics must have been intense for Ma who at this point always came close but never won any major title. Waldner already had Olympic gold and silver at this point.

@olaniyi570 Actually, Ma Lin was already two times World Cup winner when he came to Athens. That's generally regarded as the third (the least) most prestigious title in Singles (after Olympic Gold and World Champion) of the three major titles, but still.
@dickn.ormous10643 жыл бұрын
Don't know why people claim the World Cup is a slam.The Chinese never cared about the tournament unless it was hosted in China. Ma Lin's merits at the time were beating Kim Taek Soo,Waldner and Samsonov at the 1999WTTC and his performance at the 2001 WTTC team event against Korea and Belgium.
@feri7mble2 жыл бұрын
@@dickn.ormous1064 That doesn't make any sense. That is the second most prestigious yearly tournament. The Chinese players obviously don't want to win only 1 tournament every year, that's just not how professional sports work. They care about it less than they care about the Championship, but they of course still want to win it. That would be like saying the best tennis players don't care about ATP finals. It's a less important tournament than the Grand Slams but they are still there to try to win it.
@dickn.ormous10642 жыл бұрын
@@feri7mble Exactly,the tennis equivalent would be the ATP finals.It's not a major.For the Chinese in terms of significance it goes like this Olympics>WTTC>Αsian Games>World Cup.The 2000 World Cup that Ma Lin won was held 20 days after the Sydney Olympics.Shows how lousy the schedule was.

A geração do Ma Lin e do Liu Guoliang não tiveram sorte com o Waldner como FZD está tendo com Trulls Moregard.
@hyatt200513 жыл бұрын
@SwedenArise Sure. So mainly the commentators were surprised by how Waldner was shutting down all of Ma Lin's usual attacking lines. Like for example, on those forehand to forehands, Waldner usually came out ahead by being there first with great anticipation and counter attacking back while Ma Lin's momentum was carrying him in the other direction. Waldner must have studied Ma Lin's tendencies a ton and came up with a game plan just to beat him. Timo Boll could learn from Waldner
