Tablet on a motorbike - Part 1: Galaxy Tab on the AJP PR7

First episode about mounting a tablet on a motorcycle. We look at how AJP factory mounted the Samsung Galaxy Tab 6. Open up the housing. See how it is wired, how many amps the tablet uses. See how many amps we can pull from the auxiliary USB socket.
In the next episode I will share my experience with mounting an iPad on this bike and using the Rallyblitz buttons along with that.

Hoi Rogier, thanks for the video. How do those tablets fair with a gloved hand? Are you also able to get apple CarPlay working? In my case I’d have to replace some of the indicators and dials on my bike, are you able to display yours on your tablets?

Hi Justin, I have not tried to get apple CarPlay working. For the gloved operation, I sewed conductive wire in the index finger tips of my gloves. That works really well. I no longer use the ipad on the bike. Too much trouble with the connector. Maybe if you don't go offroad and you have less vibration the wiring will last longer.

Is there some particular function of the plastic piece above the tablet? It looks like a cover only. At first I thought these are 2 buttons, but in your video it seems like just a piece of plastic. Maybe can be used to install another socket. It could be cool to install some wireless (Bluetooth) buttons which could control the tablet. For example in my favorite map app Locus it's possible to use the volume buttons to zoom the map.

Hi Jaro, the plastic piece is meant for placing switches for things like auxiliary lights, or indeed, put another usb socket in. Some people take the grinder and remove the plastic piece all together. Thorkracing sells a USB remote control that installs on the handlebar with which you can control almost all of the famous navigation apps. I myself have the Blitz buttons installed to control the Rallyblitz app on the iPad. I still need to make part 2 of this video which is about using the iPad on this bike.

@@joacerbis Why would you want to use an iPad (delicate as it is) on an Enduro bike? There is the whole temperature issue, and don't forget the Rain and the Cold,, and the thing with the gloves ... if it is raining. I would be wondered if this would work?

@@Boudi-xy9by Hi Bob, I had the rallyblitz buttons mounted to work with the ipad. The only reason I mounted the ipad is to be able to run the rally app that's for ios only. In the end it was not a success. The screen brightness was not enough. The usb cable mounting would break because of vibration even though I was using the hard shell casing. The ipad itself is a very robust device. No more ipad on the bike for me though. For any tablet to work it needs to be a pretty dedicated device. Very high brightness, charging in a robust way without direct cable. They're not cheap and that's why I don't have one I guess.

Hello. Great video! thanks for it. Just one question. Does the bike came with Samsung tablet? If yeas. Would be greate idea to built tablet "just" fot the bike. There is not need to have front camera and some useless buttoms. I would prefer biger RAM for example rather then front camera. What do you thing?

The bike came with the Samsung tablet. Bigger RAM is nice. Front camera is useless. You'd be better off filming yourself with a GoPro or some other action cam. The tablet is not fully waterproof. A waterproof tablet such as the Samsung tab 'active' would be better. You'd need another holder for it instead of the one supplied by AJP. For example one from RAM mount. It becomes an expensive solution. The wiring to the tablet remains the weakest point. RAM does have some nice mounts but if they are up to the task I don't know. The tablet wiring connections get an awful lot of vibration during offroading.

If you want a great solution go for the Carpe Iter. Not cheap but best bang for the bucks and do everything you want. Fully waterproof. Bombproof, Bluetooth controller, more ram, way faster then the Samsung Active. Produced only for offroad opportunity

I fitted the same tablet to my KTM GT a few years ago , using the Garmin Zumo bracket that came with the bike. I mounted the tablet by gluing a Zumo bracket rain cover to the back of the Samsung which then just clips into the bracket !. Easy to remove too .

Very interesting. I have several questions and would be grateful if you could answer them. How does the tablet turn on and off? If it's in the box I don't know how to access the on / off button. In case of extreme temperature, more than 50 degrees does not automatically turn off? Thank you

Hi Alberto, The tablet turns on when (usb) power gets connected (engine on). When power gets disconnected (engine off), the dashboard app will shutdown the device, but not after asking the user first. This behavior, where the device switches on when powered-up and switches itself off when powered-down can only be achieved on a rooted tablet. If you don't wish to root your tablet you cannot use this particular housing which hides the on/off buttons. I have never had the tablet switch off because of over heating. I'm pretty sure that the firmware on the device will take care of this. When parked in the sun I usually put some garment, a jacket or my gloves or something over it. Never had a problem.

The dashboard app is called Drive Mode Dashboard. You can find it inside the Google Playstore. Regarding a 3d printed tablet case. I bet some people have done that. But I can't help you out with that one. 2nd part of the video is still somewhat planned.

I have been really enjoying your information videos, Rogier! How are you getting on with the IPAD set up! I’m looking to swap out my Samsung for an IPad! Trying to work out best options for case and mounts for the PR7. Any advice?

Hi James, the new video won't be coming soon I'm afraid. However I can share with you my experience. I have used the IPad mini4 which I mounted using a Ram Mount Type-C. A bit bigger than the traditonal Type-C ball. The shell for the IPad is an aiShell. Experience has not been good. Here's why: 1. Display not bright enough in bright daylight. Display on 100% brightness already. 2. Charging cable fails. Even though the plug is secured to the case, the connection eventually fails. This is due to vibration and the lightning connector being a weak spot to start with. 3. The aiShell screen protector easily scratches. A solution with traditional cable and plug does not work reliably off road.. Wireless charging could be a solution or a dedicated device mount connector. That or having a big battery of course.

@@JJamJ Hi, I've had a small test ride on the PR7 from mhb motorcycles but haven't bought one yet, I've also had a test ride on the Tenere 700 and I think I'm leaning toward the Tenere 700 because I can carry a pillion on the T7, the T7 also has ABS which is a bonus when on road and in general, the T7 felt more comfortable for my ergonomics. The T7 might not be an off-road animal like the PR7 but its close enough and I think it would suit my 70/30 road/off-road needs better ... I still have the Tiger 1200 to date 🤔

Congrats! I'm always curious at navigation solutions. The Samsung tablet is good for the fact that it's a pretty cheap device. Screen readability in sunshine is not bad. So, yes the tablet is enough. Just using the tablet as a navigation device, nothing else. A rugged phone could replace the tablet or be an extra. If you can manage to get a stable power connection to the phone and provide enough charge to run the screen at full brightness, which is required in bright daylight, you have a good piece of kit. Maybe wireless charging would provide enough power to the phone to keep it charged up. RAM has some nice solutions. It can get expensive. If you go that way, I'd be interested to hear your findings. Another thing is that buttons on the handlebar to do some basic operations on the navigation device is extremely handy and much safer than trying to operate the navigation device while standing up on the pegs and going thru some nasty terrain. For example the buttons made by Thork racing are nice. They would also work with your (Android) phone.

@@CesarLopez-hh7cd For the rugged phone that can serve as a navigation device I think that the CrossCall Core X4 would work. It can be operated in rain and with gloves. They seem to have a pretty good mount for it as well.

@@joacerbis downside of wireless charging is all the heat it generates. I’ve had my iPhone power down due to overheating just charging it with a normal cable already. That would get a lot worse with wireless charging. Although it’s so much more convenient to operate with a gloved hand… wireless charging + active cooling?

@@justinhalsall4077 Yeah I was thinking the same about the heat. I have purchased the CrossCall "Core M5" phone 2 weeks ago. It comes with a pretty decent mount. I do plan to make a video about this setup soon. I might get the Thork racing remote control thingy to avoid having to mess with the gloves on the screen. However, with the conductive wire its not bad.

The box can be purchased from AJP. Box, external charging socket and wiring will cost you around 200 Euros inc. VAT. If you would wish to use a RAM mount, you would have to fabricate a custom plate, but that shouldn't be too difficult. If you need help with purchasing these items, let me know and I will connect you with the Dutch dealership.

Via GPS. It doesn't have cell phone capability. You can't insert a sim card.

I guess the Monterra never really caught on. Hardware seems to be the same as the Montana. I own the Montana. It's not my favorite piece of equipment. I prefer the gpsmap 60 series with the physical buttons. In terms of screen readability in direct sunshine the Garmins sure have the edge above any tablet. On the motorbike you need the screen to be always on and therefore need a powered cradle.

That's right, no sim card required. In that case you can use offline maps. Add them before you go on a trip using wifi.
