Start with with fraction. Find a common base, 40 will do. 16/40 to 35/40 then. We can throw away the denominator take the ratio and multiply. So, 32.

Bow tie works for "proportions" too Mr Math Man. ;) I will use this word "proportions" for % problems instead of "rule of 3" then. Got it! My method called the common sense approach: 2/5 times 70 = n times 7/8 or 140/5 = n times 7/8 or (simplified) 28 = 7/8 times n. Then you divide 28 by 7/8 and you get n = 32.

n =32. I am writing that before getting the answer and all the goodies from Mr Math Man. ;) Basic rule of 3 gives me 224/8 = 140/5. Or 28 = 28. Now I am checking if I'm right and watch your methos.

This is a relationship question. What is X referenced to Y. the given relation is: 2/5 to 7/8 go either way, as in: [(7/8)÷(2/5)] =? or [(2/5)÷(7/8)] = 1/? (7/8)÷(2/5) = (7/8)×(5/2) = 35/16 and (2/5)÷(7/8) = (2/5)×(8/7) = 16/35 To establish the direction of these two relationships we will rename the phrase "is to" to the phrase "goes into." so it is proper to say (2/5) is to (7/8) is same as (2/5) goes into (7/8) = 35/16 therefore N is to 70 also means N goes into 70 by same 35/16 or 70÷N = 36/16 70×(16/35) = N 2×16 =N N = 32 VERIFY 2/5 is to 7/8 as? 32 is to 70 (2/5)/(7/8)=?(32)/(70) (2/5)×(8/7)=? 32/70 16/35 =? 32/70 16/35 =❤ 32/70✔️

N/70 = 2/5 divided by 7/8, cross multiply and get N times 7/8 = 2/5 times 70, 7/8N = 28, multiply both sides by 8/7, N= 32
@gaylespencer6188 Жыл бұрын
Even before cross-multiplying have the 7/8 do its back-flip and then multiple 2/5 times 8/7, then finish up.

I used a totally different technique to solve this. I first pretended to want to add the two fractions together. I find the common denominator. When I did this, I ended up with 16/40 and 35/40. It just so happened that 70 is 35 doubled. So I just doubled 16 to get 32. I just ignored the denominator because I was just looking for the relationship between the two numerators.

N is to 70 as 2/5 is to 7/8 so (if I'm right) the equation here is ..... N/70 = 2/5 / 7/8 first. cross multiply 7/8 (N) = 2/5 (70) 1/5 of 70 is 14 so 2/5 of 70 is 28 7/8 (N) = 28 now multiply both sides by 8 7 (N) = 224 and finally divide both sides by 7 N = 32 32 is to 70 as 2/5 is to 7/8

The way I read it, 70 = 7/8, so 1/8 = 10 and 8/8 = 80. Therefore, I had to find 2/5 x 80, which is 32.

32....bcz....2/5x200=400/1000= 0,40 7/8x125= 875/1000=0,875 X to70 is the same like 0.40 to 0.875 X= (0.4x70):0.875 =32

But what's wrong with short cuts if they work and are logical? Have you forgotten the bow tie hack already? I don't think so. As far as I'm concerned it's easier to understand that if I have this equation 28 = n times 7 I only have to divide 28 by 7 to get n, no? By contrast, it is not intuitive to add 8/7 to both sides of the equation but I get that it's THE method that needs to be applied because it's a CONVENTION. But is it easier to understand the logic of it all? Personally I don't think so. Anyway! Just giving you my point of view. I would not do that for higher mathematics. Don't worry! ;)

As soon as I saw 35/40, your question was toast. 16/40 follow by 2 x 16 = 32, done in head under 1 minute.

Easy enough to do in your head. n/70 = (2/5) / (7/8) = 2*8 / (7*5) = 16/35. SInce 70 is twice 35, n must be twice 16, or 32.
