Greetings. The portion of the absolute values of negative 9 and positive 17 gives the absolute value of positive 8, when this value is multiplied by the negative 1 outside we get the value negative 8.

Learn |absolute value| It's always positive no matter ± -9+17=8 However, a negative outside of || Hence, -|8| >>> -8 BTW -|-8| is also -8

Key word here is sum: -9 ----------------- 0 -------------------------------17 Absolute value between -9 and 0 = 9 Absolute value between 17 and 0 =17 Absolute value between -9 and 17 = 26 - 9 + 17 = 8 (The use of the operator + in this equation is not the same as calculating the distance on the number line. I am understanding this correctly?)

It is a way of insuring that the end result is negative, no matter what value is within the absolute value sign.

I agree, that the video contains A LOT of extra words, not pertaining to math itself, or to the problem in particular: wordly introduction, numerous repetitions. Math is an accurate science! At 4:36 he is just wrong - you can distribute a positive coefficient within an absolute - the caveat is if the coefficient is negative then you have to multiply the result by -1

I flipped the equation to 17-9=8 and then negated it so 8 becomes -8.

''Absolute'' is really a confusing word. In the example we can actually combine numbers in bars to give us 8 or 26. Absolute would mean what do you get from numbers. So, if using these numbers inside the bars I can get 26 which also would be absloute. So, if we say how far the number is from 0, it basically says that it can be 8 either way. But together again the distance between 8 and -8 is 16 which we can call absolute distance, therefore, absolute value unless some other numbers are introduced into the expression thus changing values again. So, the word ''absolute'' can be applied in different ways.
