Thank you for this video. Why does f(x) = X^2-2 not have an inverse? We can still solve it to get +/-SQRT(X+2). Can you explain? Thanks.

f(x) = sqrt(x+2) is not a function because it gives you two outputs for every x-value you plug in. That wouldn't be a function by definition. Generally, even powered functions all have this problem when you're trying to find their inverses. In other words, both -2 and 2 give you 4 when you plug them into f(x) = x^2, so when we take the inverse of this function, which is f(x) = sqrt(x), you're going to get two outputs which would be a problem. A function's domain is going to be the inverse function's range. Hope that helps.

because you take the output of a function and consider it as the input to get the inverse function, which mean that if there are multiple inputs possible its a relation and not a function.

This video lost me at assuming that I know something about functions. I need videos/teachers to start a lesson assuming that the student knows nothing. Teach me from scratch. I have found when a teacher starts with I'm assuming that you know...they are going to gloss over everything. Nothing will really be taught.
