X/4+5x/2=10 X/4+10x/4=10 11x/4=10 11x=10x4 11x=40 X=40/11 X= 3.636 Using reciprocals is much easier than all the fractions.

Right... unlike those other 7 minute tutorials you say don't work...you waste the first 6 plus minutes talking your book.

For this problem... First factor x to give x(1/4 + 5/2) = 10. Since 1/4 + 5/2 = 11/4, we "flip and multiply" both side to cancel the coefficient of x... and get x = 10*(4/11) = 40/11. Did all this in my head (because the sum was made easy by the denominators being 4 & 2) in like 10-15 seconds. If that. After having done Algebra for a long time "the normal way" (writing down each and every step), you have to free yourself from the rigid/set ways of doing things, and just focus on the goal: solve for x (ie., get x all by itself on one side of the equation). In this case, since x can almost be isolated by factoring it out of the two terms on the LHS, so we do that first. Then it's a simple thing to combine the fraction, flip and multiply to the other side. (Took over 20 times longer type the explanation than to do the problem. LOL!)

OMG 11x=40 x=40/11 You can see it just by looking at it in 5 secs. You don't need a long video to explain this *trivial* equation!!!!!

A lot of students struggle with LCD so it's usually less thought time for them just to tell them to multiply through by the product of the denominators, that way they can start the question, obtain some methods marks rather than just give up straight away. It gets to the same answer. Also why give the answer as a decimal, and actually a totally wrong decimal answer it is 3.63 recurring, it's not even 3.63 to 2 dp! Is this acceptable in the US? This would score no accuracy marks here IF 40/3 had not been written first. Best to always give the answer as a fraction unless otherwise stated in my view, your 3.63 is too sloppy, again in my view. Also could have also added the LHS as another method

This guy talks much too much. He must loose his middle school class before he’s finished

He is teaching you how to THINK AND LEARN so what you describe as "talking too much" is really giving you information you can apply to LOTS of math problems. Also, consider that many here are NOT math majors to say the LEAST! His teaching style is EXACTLY what many of us appreciate!

@@lamper2 Fast forward! But did it really need a decimal resolution? I not joking.

@@lamper2 The problem with you defending this guy's taking too much as a means of "giving information to lots of math problems" is that he isn't talking about THIS math problem during all his rambling. I appreciate people who try to teach others, but this guy has to be confusing more people than helping because he is giving WAY too much unrelated "information" that people have to process, and that only discourages those who cannot sort out the 95% of verbal nonsense. He seems to ramble on during every video (at least all the ones I have tried to listen). Maybe he is just rambling to make his videos longer so that he receives more ad breaks, because these math problems should not take 10-15 minutes to explain : even 5 minutes would be pushing it.

I appreciate his work, but I couldn't finish the video because he wouldn't get to the point. I phased out before I found out how to work the problem.
