First remove the denominators, then isolate x from the numerical values. It is really easy to solve.

I solved it by addition of fractions. The last expression was x= 8/6÷2/6 wich goes x=48/12 so x=4

Multiply everything by 6. x=4. Takes 5 seconds. Can do it in my head.

You can put parenthesis around the entire equation then x 6. No need to write the 6 down 3 times.

Why this obsession whit the LCD? Just an extra hurdle to get over on the way to the solution for students. Any common denominator will do just as good? From my experience most students will pick 12 rather than 6. If students can't think of one I tell them to just multiply all the denominators and multiply through by that.

I don't agree with your approach. It's much better to first combine the terms on the left before finding the LCD. First multiply 2X/3 by 2/2 to get 4X/6. Now you can rewrite the left as (4X - 2X - 5)/6 ==> (2X - 5)/6. So now, looking at the whole problem again, it's just a simple cross multiply problem which yields (2X - 5)/6 = 1/2 4X -10 = 6 4X = 16 X = 4. Much more elegant. When I took the actuarial exams their were multiple ways of solving each problem. The trick to passing the exam was to find the most direct solution. Not doing so meant that it would take 2 to 3 times as long for each problem resulting in a failed result. Even though the correct answer could be found.
