Solved in my head at the thumbnail, the answer is 64. 80% ( 30 + 40 / 4 * 5 ) Following PEMDAS, we first divide: 80% ( 30 + 10 * 5 ) Then we multiply: 80% (30 + 50 ) Then we add, finishing up the parentheses: 80% (80_ Since 80% is 8/10, 1/10 of 80 is 8, multiplied by 8, so the answer is 64.

64. Using PEMDAS for what's in the parenthesis, 40/4=10, 10x5=50, 50+30=80, which takes care of what's in the parenthesis. 80% as a decimal is .8 (move the sign 2 places the left and turn the % sign into a decimal point). .8(80)= .64, move the decimal point back right two places and use the percent sign again, so .64 is now 64%.

That IS the counter intuitive aspect of PEMDAS. Parenthesis and exponents have no groups, but multiplication/division and addition./subtraction are groups within PEMDAS, and should be done left to right so long as they are in the same group. It's easy enough to remember once explained, but yes, it does seem to cause a lot of confusion. I used to look at it as P-E-MD-AS, just so I wouldn't forget.

I got the answer a different way. 10% of 80=8 in the parentheses. Then dropping the trailing zero on each side, for 10 % of anything, you drop the last digit of both sides and the because of the parentheses, you multiply the figures. Then 8x8-64

PEDMAS 40/4=10x5=50+30=80. 80x80=8x8=64 or 80x80=6400/100=64. The multipication after addition is required to figure the percentage and not part of the PEMDAS rule.

Reducing a fraction such as 8/10 to the lowest integer numerator/denominator (4/5) is not always simpler. "80 divided by 10, then times 8" is easier to do in the head than "80 divided by 5, then times 4" -- 8x8 vs determining 80/5 (16) then times 4. In fact, to solve this in my head, I thought: 80 percent of 80 means 80x80 divided by 100 = 6400/100 = 64.
