As someone who is trying to get into bolt action and was frustrated with the painting process, this was soooooo helpful! Trying to eye up the colors and get them right was so hard for me. I would love to see more guides for the other nations too if y'all have the time. Thank y'all for all the help you give us new players!

I was once like you so worried about the colors. Most major brands have specific colors for nationalities that work fine for uniforms and equipment. In reality the uniform and equipment colors in real life vary greatly. Veterans will have faded colors on uniforms and new replacements would have more dialed in colors so uniformity of colors is not a big deal. The Americans tended to have the most uniformity in their colors. Germany started out well but by late 1942 their colors were starting to vary due to the pressures of the war on manufacturing. The Soviets were the absolute worst on colors because lack of supply chains and rampant incompetence in their manufacturing. The Soviets could stand up a company of armor and not 2 vehicles would be close in color. If you still worry about colors that’s fine. Enjoy your research and happy painting. Since these are miniatures my recommendation is to try and use lighter/brighter colors due to the scale. In the real world the paint/color schemes were meant to blend into terrain. If you do that with miniatures then tend to disappear and be bland on the table top. Good luck and enjoy the hobby.

Battlefront have paint sets and painting guides for all the ww2 and cold war factions. That should give you ideas about the base colours then use Travis's excellent guide for shading and highlighting. But don't stress the colours too much. A layer of battlefield grime and some fading due to the sun would be common.

I have been waiting for this since you first teased your Veterans. I'm so stoked for this set and I'm dying to get mine. You can save yourself a bit of time in the highlighting step by using the Green Grey as your second highlight on the Field Grey, rather than mixing a blend.

27:00 is that an option in the kit, or did you have to kitbash that pose? It's perfect.

@@tabletopcp OMG that's tight. Such an iconic pose (though that poor guy's head's going to be ringing for the rest of the war) 😆

The new formula of Agrax will leave a glossy finish, it's unfortunate because it was my go-to. I've since switched to Army Painter's Strong Tone or the "sonic tonic" mixture.

I always varnish my models with Munitorum Varnish out of a spray can. If you do it in a controlled environment you’ll never have a problem with “frosting” and it unifies the finish of the model. You might like a brush on varnish instead or a fully matte varnish, but whatever you choose a good varnish is a perfect last step to finish your paint job.

@jonathanbirkeland1085 I find the glossy finish of the new GW shades doesn't play well with some of my paints when I'm highlighting. I don't always varnish my minis, but when I do I've been disappointed with the end result and its effects on my paint job, but I'll give the brand you mentioned a look and try it out.

@@thebladesman Be carful about spraying in a humid or too hot or cold of an environment. Definitely do a test model before doing it to a batch. You might find a brush on varnish works better though. Thin it down a little and apply it much like you would an all over wash. Make sure everything under the varnish is totally dry and give the varnish lots of time to dry too. I like to let my wash dry overnight and my varnish dry overnight too. Good luck!

No priming? Another way to handle the skin is to paint it white. The apply the flesh contrast paint. The final step would be to use your choice of flesh tone paint and lightly highlight the skin areas. Kudos to you to try and do the white on eyes.
