Tabletop Terrain EVERY Fantasy Game needs!

I've always felt the essential buildings are two homes, somewhere to drink and meet dubious strangers, a store or warehouse or barn to raid, and somewhere to bust your unjustly imprisoned comrades out of. In a more Western/SF context that might be a cantina, a barn or garage, and a sheriff's office with a cell. The trick is that two houses mean it's not just a one-off, it's a settlement. Of course, then you add more stuff, maybe a shrine and a tower, but that's the basics.

Perhaps a small stone tower. Acting as either watchtower, belltower, or "donjon" for holding prisoners. Depending on what sort of embellishments you wish to add (bells, window bars, etc). An interesting point about drinking establishments: while fantasy tropes passed down to us (especially in D&D) give us the dedicated drinking spot called a "Tavern", which at times did exist historically, at many times in the past a community would have no such specific building. Instead, alcohol would be brewed by individual households, often by the woman of the house as part of normal chores. Prior to the advent of effective preservative technologies (like corks), alcohol wouldn't keep for very long at all. So it was advantageous to invite or allow one's neighbors to come in and grab a pint of beer or a glass of wine. In effect, every house in the community might function as a temporary pub. With people hanging temporary signs outside their doors, to signal when drinks were available. (These signs may naturally have fanciful illustrations particular to it, from which the act of pubs/taverns having such signs and names originated). In close-knit medieval communities, this act of sharing the booze was a matter of mutual aid. Providing for the people you relied on to survive, with the understanding they would return the favor by brewing their own drinks for you to partake.

Love the drunkitecture, but not sold on the plank roofs, unfortunately. Not sure if it's the scale, or the uniform size, but it seems a bit off :(

Yeah could be the thickness of the planks? Probably go with the 1mm balsa wood next time :)

I love how the plaster over brick effect turned out, those are all awesome!!! And I love the easy approach to getting rustic angles but still standing well! (I don’t have a hot wire table, but want to try building one!) I’m going to have to try some wooden roofing techniques, I think that like ye said the time tradeoffs in some areas are worth the gains in others, particularly the ease of width uniformity versus cutting cardboard shingles.

Just discovered your channel, but I'm really enjoying your basic crafting techniques - especially your Diablo-influenced dungeons and this one. As someone who (while a longtime admirer of terrain building channels on youtube) is relatively new to terrain building, it's always good to have more very basic terrain alternatives, and I do like the look and functionality of yours.

Thank you! I think with the steps nailed down, I could build one in about half a day (excluding drying times). The roofs are still a bit time-consuming and drying times make this hard to nail down though.

Oh wow, that's not too bad! But now I'm wondering if it would be possible to make some thatched roof houses and what you would need for that (assuming that it doesn't take an unreasonable amount of time to make).
