I saw a tutorial from a model car builder that uses fine steel wool and white vinegar in a glass jar. It makes actual rust that you can the “paint” on with an old brush.

What the end result puts me in mind of is the effect I've seen historical modellers use, dabbing plastic putty onto tank plates then sanding it back slightly. The slightly lumpy texture looks like cast metal. Works here too.

I was thinking the same thing last night - thought I could stipple this stuff on and then basecoat over it with an airbrush to get that cast texture to it. Thanks for watching!

A really nice scale modelling trick that also uses plastic putty is this Drill a small hole with a pin vince into the model. Don't go too deep, we don't want to go all the way through. Fill the hole with plastic putty. Take the rounded end of a brush and push it into the hole. This will create a domed indent with a small rim around the edge. Congratulations, you've now got a realistic looking shell or bullet impact on the model.

This is an excellent method for a 'rust in place effect, where the surface corrosion remains at the point of corrosion, but it doesn't recreate the effect of rust streaking down from the point that is rusting. For that, the best effect seems to be oil dot streaking, where you put a small dot of the rust color at the point where the streak starts, then blend it down with a brush lightly dampened with mineral spirits.

I am right there with you, as I feel this part of our projects is the most fun. And that model looks fantastic!!! And funny story, since you mentioned patina effects on miniatures near the end of this video: the very time I ever saw one of your videos goes back about 7 years or so when I needed to paint oxidation effects on a GW miniature for our Adepticon team display. This was before GW made the technical paint we have now. You had an awesome tutorial of how to paint oxidation on the Imperial statue for 40K. Pachow! I watched and liked your videos ever since. Good show!

I've been playing with Dirty Down (and really like the results I've gotten,) but I also like having different options, depending on the project. This looks really good for a "years of battle damage" as opposed to a "corroded from stagnant water exposure" look of Dirty Down. Just some observations. Great video!

My favorite thing I ever did with rust is my Rusted Host Plague Marine Kill team where they are just COVERED in Fresh rust (Not made with this paint mind you) and old Rust in the recesses Fluf being that they have a condition that causes them to constantly exude rust from themselves onto anything they come in contact with. I swear I had a moment of dread when I took those Green primed Marines that I had bronzed the trim on and stippled Browns and oranges across the whole thing... I went "Oh god I've ruined them" but then in the end once I picked out the non rust parts with the greens and fabric colours etc etc I went "Wow Damn, this looks super awesome"

In all the best places this model now looks like very old castings, left outside and surface pitted with rust. The texture once drybrushed metal becomes the new original surface and being raised looks very much like the rust that remains on the panels is pitted into them. You could do the same with very, very old bronze castings just using very dark browns in place of rust paint.

I used a similar technique for my Gasland's cars. I used cheap paint and baking soda for the texture. I stippled in stages from brown to orange with some gun metal mixed in. For scorched areas I added some black, it gave a convincing blistered look.

I had a rusty necron army once. What I did was I used a rust colored primer from Rustolium as my base coat, and then I kind of drybrushed and splotched on metal around the models, and also some oranges for brighter rust spots, and then slathered nuln oil all over everything. It was quick and dirty and looked good.

Now i don't have these snazzy rust paints (might change after seeing your impressive results) but doing similar things what i find really makes it pop is to mix in some dark blue/sea green (i think that's what its called, basically that dark turquoise colour) with your metallic of choice for the final drybrush. I don't know why but it just hits different.

9:30 its like if you've ever seen a very very dirty light switch. Over time the whole face of the switch gets dirty, but once it reaches a tipping point where it can't get any more dirty then the dirt starts to get worn away so you end up with a clean spot where it gets used the most. It would be the same with an object thats completely rusted, when its made of metal thats so thick it wont rust through to the point it falls apart like say most cars do, instead over time it gets completely rusted over and that acts as a protective layer, but eventually if it keeps getting "used" some of that rust will get worn off. So this definitely helps sell the scale of these models, as only something made of extremely thick metal can become completely covered in rust and not fall apart. I'd say you could get away with doing a lot more harsh metallic sections, so long as they are made to look like weapons have hit them and made gouges through the rust.

This looks great. Not taken anything way from it. But all I can say is no one would ever send a warmachine into the battlefield bare metal. Yea, there is stainless steel and the like, but rarely do you make a whole machine out of stainless. When it comes to ships or tanks or anything else like it, you need to coat it. Rust is the devil it will destroy your equipment. I would say, paint the thing, but add patches of rust where there was damage for a slightly more grounded look. Still a nice job.
