Those ambot minis are so good for orks! I bought three packs to make a full unit of converted meganobz, the meganob weapons that you get plenty spare of fit very well on them with minimal chopping and changing. I don't tend to buy lots of copies of the same mini for conversion fodder, but I do have a tendency to hoard commemorative models that GW put out, and a lot of them end up being used in conversions.

This is the old box dreadnought for me. I bought two of them before they got discontinued, a venerable, an ironclad, 3x blood angels, 2x space wolves (need one more), and some... er... "extremely similar to discontinued FW model" dreadnoughts. (I'd prefer to buy them legitimately but GW hasn't made that possible in years so...). They're all BASICALLY the same thing, but I just love all the little details and customisation you can do on them and have them all painted differently for different chapters. One thing I quickly picked up from Adam Savage, is to always have materials and supplies on hand for when inspiration strikes. Nothing will kill your momentum for an exciting project faster than having to search for, find, buy, and wait for a bunch of stuff. At the same time, I realized one of my biggest inhibitions to building or painting a model was 'but what if I screw it up'. Not to mention, I'd always get the most inspiration for what to do with a model kit, while I was building it. This prompted me to generally buy more than one of a kit; I'd feel safe knowing I had a spare if I screwed something up, and if another cool idea strikes that required me to do something different from the start, I could immediately start on it. It's been a huge help for me actually building and painting models to buy spares. I've since found out that several modelers (especially professional modelers, who build for museums, commissions, or the like) I know on youtube or elsewhere do exactly the same thing. Especially if it's a more niche model that may cease production (I bought several duplicates of Bandai's Star Wars vehicles, for example). I follow a few professional modelers who will go buy a stack of a particular kit if it strikes them, using the extras to try different methods on certain sections, or as backups when inevitably something goes wrong. This is often because they are altering or improving the model itself.. either kitbashing it into something new, or just making changes to increase its accuracy. So, because of all this, I always buy the same kits. More often for vehicles than figures.. but figures are certainly not immune. For example, I've bought at least 3 Storm Ravens. Maybe 4? I hate the Storm Raven as it's supposed to be built.. but the shape is immensely inspiring for conversions for me. Just look at the Storm Eagle and Fire Raptor. I'm currently designing and building a transport variant, of it, like the Sky Talon (RIP), which has me wanting to buy yet another kit so I can try my hand at something more akin to a Storm Eagle. On top of this, I have an actual Fire Raptor kit, and have been impatiently waiting for another Storm Eagle production run. The Baneblade, Imperial Knights, Valkyrie and other kits fall into this bucket as well. But in summary, if you haven't, consider buying duplicates of your next kit. You may realize how much it helps your modeling anxiety, inspiration, and if nothing else, add some fun parts to your bits box.

Personally, I'd say Midhammer space marine and ork models definitely fit into that category (up to and especially including monopose ones from 3rd-6th ed. Starter boxes), doesn't matter if i have 100 tactical multipart and monopose marine bodies or half a dozen black reach warbosses, or a handful of dark vengeance librarians etc. etc. Etc., when you combine these two types of models, they are probably the most modular kits GW made and will likely ever make plus they give you access to a ton of nice unique bits (i.e. dark vengeance models for dark angels players like myself) so if you're not too worried about base sizes and all that or play older versions of the game and so on, it allows you to really kitbash and go hog wild with conversions of all sorts and really make some cool stuff without spending too much on already expensive GW plastic crack. That Lord of Plagues/Nurgle Chaos Lord model is so damn great. It's from Sept 2011 and you can really see all the design choices, themes and features that Games WOrkshop sculptors would carry forward to future Nurgle releases in The End Times, Age of Sigmar and even 40k with the Death Guard. There was a wave of plastic single model character releases around this time, some of them still sold today for $20 and they hold up incredibly well, the Lord of Plagues the best of them. It's just so bizarre because June 2011 was when GW introduced Finecast, not just converting metal models to resin finecast, but also producing NEW models in resin finecast. I find it fairly interesting.

This is actually a very sweet story. Lord of Plagues models everywhere are waiting for Uncle Atom to walk by and say "well, hello there!". Thanks for sharing.

That made me smile, I appreciate it. Kind of a Toy Story vibe. Thanks for watching!

U.A. in case you didn't know..there are two gangs in necromunda that are miniature agnostic. They are venators and outcasts. Venators are more skilled while the outcasts are numerous (lower credit costed). They don't have cool house advantages but they can be chaos corrupted. This tends to level the field and hey who doesn't like dark rituals...

I usually don't buy duplicates, but sometimes it happens that I have the same miniature twice (gifts, purchase of collections etc). It is always a nice motivation to get some kitbashing going.

I don't go deep on the same model, but I go wide on cool models that fire up my imagination. I rarely do much with them, but as long as I own them, it's possible for me to get to them. I AM running out of space, though 😅

Excellent video Dude. I do this multiple copies of the same model thing with models I can see multiple kitbashing options (like the thanatar and the contemptor achillus (?). Like you said, "if it makes you happy".

The Lord of Plagues is the first model I went try hard on. took 25 hours to paint, at the time i was only months into painting and it felt awesome! definitely need more

Im aiming to have 100 of the monopose ork boyz, so i can do a squad of 10 with each pose. Im new and have enjoyed painting these periodically and watching my improvement over the last year and a bit. I like that they are familiar. The bigger question for me is if i keep going when i get to 100. At 50 now, have a feeling ill be happy to be done if i get there.

Those ambots have potential, Iron Warrior Obliterator conversion.

It's funny that your favourites are mostly from the early plastic character range put out for fantasy and 40k. They all hold up really well in my opinion

Grognard games! Man, i miss that shop... both the rosell and batavia locations are great. Unfortunately, I moved away, but anytime im visiting family, I make a point of visiting them. I still haven't found a shop as good as them.

A few months ago, I played in my first Legion tournament and won a Best in Faction award. I bought a little display case and “retired” my army’s named character models before buying replacements for each of them.

I find it to the great thing about rank and flank units you can paint the same guy if you want 20 or 30 times...

Those Ambots are AMAZEBALLS. They ARE really versatile for just about any game! I’m going to get another kit and try to recast using Blue Stuff the main body because then you can produce more out of the kit, I think. They’d be great for custom Blackstone Fortress baddies like Spindle Drone-infected bots or something, and the possibilities are endless.

I think it is about making plans. Making plans for a new force is part of the fun in the hobby. And buying stuff for the plans you made is the next logical step. But it is an easy step too. Finally we end up with stuff for our plans. (So I think unbuild/unpainted forces belong to the same category like what you talked about.) And often you just paint one or two minis and then get distracted by some new shiny stuff. And start making plans... so it goes on and on... 😉 It is not a shame. It is just the way it works. And to be honest: It is fun!.

Multiple mini copies doesnt seem weird to me, HOWEVER i do think you should magnetize if the reason for a particular copy is to achieve a WYSIWYG loadout

I'm just SUCH a slow painter and I dip in and out of this hobby so much, that any and all kits are overwhelming to me. I want aggressors, I'd love infiltrators/snipers, I want those new chaos armiger knight thingies... and I haven't even looked at any releases in like the past 2 years. I still have nearly an entire Nurgle Harbingers box to put together and paint as well lmao....

The Leagues of Votan Kahl is one of those models for me. I'm a veteran of the Rogue Trader era/ first edition of 40K and I still have my old Squats army from back then so Leagues of Votan are my favourite Army . I have dabbled in other factions but Votan are my guys. The Harlequins' Death Jester Is another. And the Officio Prefectus Commisar is another one too. So yeah I understand this phenomenon very very much.

I have a similar problem, I always buy the fertility idol mini when I find it at my hobby store. Have 2 boxed and 2 open and modified lol. Use them as captured points etc.
@nagashthegod2 ай бұрын
That commisar is so adaptable I gave one a pistolier horse and now he's a Rough Rider commisar. Given how many GW minis are monopose nowadays, I don't see much difference between doing this and having two boxes set of the same troops kit, for those worried about variety.

As far as i know i dont have duplicates, but i have learned not to open the shrink wrap until im actually going to build and paint models. Makes it a great deal easier to sell them later if i decide not to use them.

I have had a built Lord of Plagues for ages that has never been used. I got him in a lot that was mostly random bits. I think he will get painted this weekend. Hes got that medieval Jason Vorhees vibe and I dig it.
