A good example of International v commercial would be Jamie Harrison.He wanted to fish for England and always knew he would never be able to break into the England set up.When the England feeder team came up,he asked Tommy P what he needed to do,he went away and did the hard yards and eventually got into the England set up.

What a fantastic conversation , opening up all kinds of questions on the state of British Angling today. The comment of commercial fisheries saving British angling I found very poignant and totally agree. When I look back at the fishing in the 70's and 80's and the venues that were fished....there is absolutely no comparison as to what are being fished today. That along with tackle development and techniques to match, again no comparison either. Many of our bigger , wilder and natural venues have fallen by the wayside due to lack of interest or being maintained . And what happened to Holme Pierpoint ? Surely that was as close to a European venue you see these days?. Excellent podcast guys , and kudos to both Steve and Matt for standing by their principles of winning an international title over a big pot of money :) please, keep these coming guys , absolutely fantastic topics .

I've met Steve and the England Feeder Team when we organised the WC feeder in Belgium. What commitment those guys have is unbelievable.. and believe you me, everybody looks up at the England lads!

I already love Matt and Steve and their videos but this podcast has blown me away - the pride Steve displays fishing for the shirt and the medals and the insane levels of kit Matt had to take to a world champs (had no idea) are both mind blowing and humbling. Truly worthy representatives of their country - thanks for the insights.

You may have to do some bargaining with Jaime, Andy and Rich. Mr. Hughes did say he wanted to have Mr. Ringer on Winning Ways to have chat just like they did with Nick Speed, Mr Bennett and Des Shipp. May be they would do fair swap for Mr Ringer doing a 'ways' video and Jaime doing the Guru podcast. I do understand their sponsors could be an issue though but I've always liked Winning Ways and the Guru podcasts because you've both been good at getting a wide selection of anglers on your content. You need a Guru/Ways cross-over. Everyone always loves a cross-over.

I agree with you Steve. We anglers make lots of sacrifices, a whole lot of money spent , time away from families, the addiction to fish. But there isn't any prize that can compensate tha world champion title. We , the anglers from the other countries, that's where we know you from. You make a name for yourself by winning world champs. That's how will people remember you , as the best of the best. We, the anglers from Romania look up to you, the anglers from Hungary look up to you , they talk about you , they want to learn from you , i think every good angler from the major countries want to learn from you. That is what the world title gets you. And no money can buy that.

All of the names mentioned about being viable or could possibly fish within an England set-up, have been successful at UK commercial fishing. Steve is proof of that. There is canal and river scenes within match fishing, which it could be argued are maybe more closley related to the skill set required for England, yet they weren't mentioned...? So, in order to even have a look in, at senior level without going through the junior events such as Matt, you would have to have won something domestically with some form of recognition, to even be potentially considered. I think though it to do with relateability. 99% wont get chance to fish internationaly, but absolutely anyone with £50 can have a crack at the UK domestic scene and win. On the hand, without backing it could be very difficult for anyone to financially risk attempting to fish for England. Great topic and it would of been interesting to have the other side or the argument currently represented in the discussion. Look forward to the next one.

Jamie and Andy have spoken about this on winning ways and Jamie said he had no interest world title and does what he does because he loves it and it pays the bills. So making a living out of something you enjoy can't be a bad thing.

I remember reading quite a few comments that I presume came from UK commercial fishing anglers about the Iberian Master and how organizing such an event on the Júcar is taking the piss, that it is unfishable and this and that...made me giggle. Steve is also right about how we fish on the main continent, even at events between friends we fish to FIPS regulations and that in terms widens the pool of candidates.

People like Andy May etc who won the Kamasan match and of the year have shown they have been all rounders in the past, you had to fish many different types of venues to win them many years ago.

Commercial fishing will always be more exciting to watch as a neutral. KZbin content is 95% commercial so young anglers who search for how to videos will lean towards commercials. Biggest problem with commercial matches is kit cost for the youth. Big companies need to do more to supply good kit for teens at better prices… and make all under 18 matches 10m pole only. We need the youth 🙏🏻

I love the World/Euro championships and to me Steve Ringer is by far the most famous angler. I wonder if it is because I am not a match fisherman or maybe I came back to it after a long time away. (To get away from computers and find a bit of peace)

This has been an awesome watch and a reel (cheeky pun) eye opener on many levels! In my humble opinion, the only way to create an even keeled desire for either is through sponsorship and media presence. The rise of commercials happened as the internet went mental and is still the driving force. The rise of what the could be a massive enabler for feeder and other world fishing is the media which drives it and sponsorship. In fairness, and a derogatory factor, is the hype that’s given to S Ringer Vs A Bennet on you tube. M Godfrey vs Fish with Carl, all creates hits and clicks. If the big names distanced themselves from the commercial world, maybe they could garner more interest for their England team endeavour’s?!

What a very informed view of things today in fishing. The views aired just cemented my own..am a traditional angler (canals, reservoirs, rivers etc) via my experiences before commies sprang up, but now I am more or less forced to fish commies with my club because that's all they book now! 8-( Mention a river or canal and they run a mile! haha Keep up the good work lads. I'm not sure of the set up at Holme pier point now, but if that could be kept for just anglers. If all the fishing authorities could donate some fish they get for free from some waters. As I've known of silver fish been netted out of waters and given away to make room for the carp. Them what about a 3 day or 5 day event anyone could enter. That's like the world champs. You draw your peg out of a section and over the 3 days or 5 consecutive days you get a different section. The best anglers should do well. Film it. It would be a massive event. I'd love to enter.

Before the advent of the big money matches, I recall the Ladies match on the Trent (HQ Notts City ground) [where arrested activists were bumped up the steps of the embankment by police!] and as a nation we did quite well. I spoke to BBC News who said basically if we had some video, then it could be possibly included. To capture the public's imagination and get recognition, it is vital we get coverage on mainstream news for winning a world championship individually or as a team. The heart warming stories of having a celebrity supporting such and such charity using angling as a vehicle simply doesn't cut it, unless so quirky it makes us into a laughing stock. Sadly our governing bodies (NFA/Angling Trust) have never had the resources to be pro-active.

This is almost a natural vs commercial debate. It interests me whether commercial fisheries really exist in Europe? I know European countries are famous for specimen lakes but are commercial carp fisheries not as popular like they’ve taken over in Britain. PS. Get Tamas Walter on the podcast to get his viewpoint on same subject, how the Hungarians qualify for their international team and his general history or champs matches.

Define “better”. Big money matches are fame and glory for one individual on the podium. Where as fishing for England and winning as a team, for your country. Both are equally impressive! But I really wish that fishing was televised more and there was more sponsors involved in fishing overall!

Not sure if you can answer this! However here goes, are there certain fishing manufactures who would rather you be a commercial top angler than a top international angler? Guru seem to support their anglers more at international fishing, again I could be way off but it's just my observations.

Many of English internationals in the minority sports are generally from a wealthier back ground as they have the safety net that gives time to practice to the levels required, for our international fishing more support is required to open up to more people where that comes from I’ve no idea

andy may would be the best out of the four to transition from commercial to international competition. his love for the sport is totally different to the others its just catching fishing that comes first with andy he has a totally different approach to fishing than any other commercial anglers

First and foremost today any top match and international angler must have long term financial stability in their lives inorder to live before being dedicate to their passion, goals and objectives. Whether that is personal financial stability, sponsorship or other angling related income it does not matter. Just like any professional sports person today, this is a basic need for anyone before they can dedicate to their chosen sport.

It is (and always was) a big question to me why England went so much on the path of commercial fishing. England was always the pioneer in fishing, no matter we are talking about methods or type of fishing. As an outsider I see many many commercial matches on weekends and even during the weeks. But just a few tournaments where the anglers go and fish according to the international rules. Other thing is a bit odd to me, I could not really remember an international event (World/European Championship) hosted in England lately. There are so much excellent commercial fisheries there, but what about the venues passes the requirements of these international tournaments? How many of these are there?

We don't really have the quantity or even quality, possibly the will to have, venues to accommodate world and euro champs, let alone tactics used. This is a massive factor. Press coverage is another thing that international fishing, for me the most iconic pics with match fishing are Bob Nudd at Holme Pierrepont, Alan Scotthorne's 5th world title and Jamie Hughes's 3rd fisho win. How many match anglers now see Bob or Alan as the pinnacle of match fishing compared to the Jamie Hughes, Andy Power or Bagger?

Same issue with feeder fishing as the float, that no UK events priorities international rules. With out without bloodworm we could do with a Feedermasters series individual or team the domination of commercial style of feeder ie method & hybrid doesn’t developed international feeder anglers (50cm) within the domestic scene. Can’t see the point of the freestyle feeder international emergence.

Would love to see a slightly more balanced discussion with someone who solely follows the big money finals. Great video though. 👍 big money finals are definitely more accessible than the world champs. Is it a team vs individual argument? How many anglers in the UK want to fish in a team? I can only imagine the selfish nature required to win a fisho/match this etc.

I was lucky enough to win the 200 peg Bridgewater canal championships twice and I was absolutely gutted when it was decided to not run it anymore not about the money but because I wanted to become the only angler ever to win it 3 times. The money was never the incentive. Like Steve said. That year he was the best in the world. Those year's I was the best Bridgewater canal angler.

The lack of funding and sponsorship in the England set up is a big factor now when you talk about it being a closed door to get in the England set up. Anyone in the team does so at a massive cost financially and timewise.

I like the discussion and agree with some points but also think some points are biased and a little down looking towards commercial anglers. I think your underselling their ability to transfer their knowledge and neglect when saying thay you would be able to beat them on a commercial, you have a huge head start because you still fish commercials. I dont see the winning ways guys coming on after this interviee because their ability was pigeon holed.

This is actually a moot discussion. Like all athletes or professionals or anyone who gets to the top of their particular tree, these anglers in both camps all have the ability to focus on all the skills they need to acquire to achieve a distant goal and then focus until they achieve it. These people manage all the manageables relentlessly to minimise their reliance on luck which over time makes them repeated winners. They could all switch and win, not immediately but eventually….

I think the biggeat problem is the lack of support and sponsorship fishing for England why would you represent your country and be out of pocket and be away from home. Fishing is the biggest participation sport in the uk but never gets the recognition

I wouldn't go pellet wetting if you paid me to do it, I'd rather fish for my country for nothing with a chance of being a world champ. There's matches out there that pay big money, not even a years wages for me, it ain't life changing money, if I was at the top tier of angling I'd rather be able to tell my kids I was a world champion than I won 25k and pissed it up the wall. Money don't mean shit to me, enjoying my fishing is everything and canal or river fishing is my thing
