50K. Hey TJ this is a great explaination and would be very helpful for beginners or anyone who doesn’t fully understand power vs action. It took me around 3-4 years to fully understand. A suggestion that might make it even clearer. Your thumb nail showed a pic of a loaded rod. If you were to put various powers and actions of rod side by side, loaded, people could visualize what you are talking about. Congratulations on 50k.

Hey Jim: One of the best explanations I've heard so far. I just wish you had omitted the word soft. (Soft and hard don't belong in the vocabulary of rod power vs action.) I like that you used the word medium solely for power. I also like that you used the word moderate solely for action.

The problem is that there's no set standard on what makes a rod medium or medium heavy or fast or extra fast. You can pick up 5 rods from different manufacturers with identical specs and they're all different. I've experienced the same thing with two different models from the same manufacturer with identical specs. They're both 7' Medium fast rods but the action on one fishes like a moderate. Unless I try one in person first, when ordering online you don't 100% know what your getting until it arrives. Until a standard is set I prefer atleast handling one in the store, but that's not always possible.

I’ve used the rule of thumb, Single Hook=Fast or Extra Fast and Treble Hook=Slow and Moderate. Where do you think Moderate Fast would work, spinnerbaits and blade bates? This is a great video topic.

You did the best with relating the actions to the different powers. But still confused with the lure choices. Fast action on bottom fishing makes you do false hook sets.

A fast action is more sensitive though which is why you want it for working the bottom.

I've used a fast action in the past for jerks as well and I believe you get a tighter action out of the jerk with the faster action. That being said I've settled on a mod fast for the reasons I stated in this video, but also because I tend to work the bait way to fast and with a slower action you're not moving the bait as much as you think as the rod is absorbing some of that movement.
