I really like to have my RTT mounted no higher that the back of the cab. This way I only take a .5 mpg hit as opposed to having it over the cab which typically is a 2 to 3 mpg hit. It also makes it much more off roadable for clearance.

@@ohiohero44the only two midsized that will fit a bigger guy is a Gladiator or Honda Ridgeline (which is not great if you want to take it off road). In every other truck, anyone and everyone over 6’ tall says the cabins are too small.

As mentioned in a comment to one of your earlier videos, I have this same truck with an Alu-Cabin. My payload is a little higher, but that may just be down to your sunroof. While I’d agree that you can feel the weight a little bit, I drove some trails near me (Little Moab and Five Mile Pass near SLC, UT) both before and after the Ali-Cabin and It really didn’t make that much of a difference in how the truck felt while driving - whether on or off-road. I did do some suspension work, but the drive feel is really great and the space is absolutely what my wife and I wanted in a camper. As mentioned before, the DEF usage is really my only concern/complaint. GM techs are saying usage is within spec given the added load (especially when I flat-towed my Jeep) and everything has been checked (including blow by) several times now. The engine runs great, so I’m crossing my fingers that the only added running cost will be more DEF than expected.

I use a midrise canopy on my ram 1500 and a 4 inch foam mattress and have my bed all made up. Gives me hard walled setup for camping around bears. I have a canopy stand same height as the bed and I can just walk it onto the truck and clamp it down in 15 mins. Everything is able to be locked up. If it's raining I can just jump in, it's all setup. I'm not sure spending that much for a tent on your roof when trucks have had canopies forever... just got to have that cool looking frame and mount stuff all over it I guess, doesn't make sense to me. But I'm old and sensible now so having a grandpa canopy is ok lol.

I like the canopies as well and I’m not that old (38), but having the rooftop tent setup frees up the truck bed for other gear. It’s all just dependent on what works for your needs.

My Prius has a payload of 900lbs, just like this truck. Maybe I should try overlanding with it. In the previous millennium we called it camping but that's not as trendy as overlanding.

Uppercut - the tight turns would be great to test turning radius. If you decide to keep them, would be good to know the required turning radius needed to make certain turns. Long vs short wheelbase turn testing would be good! This is not something often covered in YT reviews.

You can probably sleep in the back of a Prius with a bit of prep. I loved sleeping in the back of my station wagon. I don't go hunting so I have no need to go deep in the woods. But a funny thing I saw this summer I went "camping" for a week with my dad and nephew (more like babysitting) and he bought a week RV site at a luxury RV resort. A truck pulled in with all this unused off road gear mounted to it (the rotopac gas cans, shovels, traction boards, etc...) that had never seen a spec of dirt and the people slept in their roof tent. The sites were about $100 a night 😂 I didn't pay, I just went to see my dad and nephew.

As others have mentioned, you can do a rooftop tent setup where the tent is cab high. On my wife’s Gladiator, that is how we set up the rooftop tent.

I see people driving around all year with these clamshell roof top tents mounted. Between the extra weight and wind drag, does it not make sense to only haul it when your going on an overnight trip? Whats involved in mounting/removal between trips? Besides an extra set of hands on a strongbuddy.

Are you going to drop some trees in the swampy area for extra traction under the "future water and muck" to avoid having every truck just get stuck? And yeah, you should clear some more trees so you guys don't have to pay to fix too many loaner trucks.

How would the roof nest tent feel while driving in sport mode auto select drive?
@chriszaiser
@chriszaiser Ай бұрын
You just said "sport" mode on an almost 2-ton brick. That made me laugh 😂😅 but I'm assuming you're thinking the shock rate would stiffen.
@whiskyone
@whiskyone Ай бұрын
@chriszaiser I've noticed more than just the shocks stiffening on my truck. There is steering tightening along with more throttle response. Sure it's not my vette. However, I am curious how much of a difference there is in handling before I make my own purchase of a roof nest tent or just not make that purchase.

@backwoodstherapy

I mean, it is camping, but Overlanding is as much about the journey as the destination. Any crossover can get to a campsite. But a well built overlanding rig can get much further into the back country than your usual Subaru.
