Guys, as a long-time gearhead who happens to own an EV. I am glad to see that you did not immediately slam the EV Silverado because it's electric. What I have found is that most EV-haters have never driven one. Once you drive one you get a whole new perspective. Buy what you like but try before you "hate."

19:23 - fair point about the price. Depends on the mindset of the business owner. Depends how they consider down time of their current trucks for repair and preventative maintenance. EVs require much less maintenance, have no fuel costs, can be more convenient. So, over the 300K or 400K mile lifespan of a work truck, if it doesn’t need 50K in fuel, $20K is oil changes, $8K for a new motor, $4K for new transmission, and thousands of dollars additional in other maintenance costs for spark plugs, gaskets, hoses, belts, pulleys. alternators, starters, mass airflow sensors, air filters, etcetera, then it just might be worth it.

I live on the prairies of Alberta. Farmers/ranchers can live a long ways out of town. Heading to town,running around,heading back can put alot of kms on. Add weight or heaven forbid a trailer and there's a big chance they r not doing that without a charge. I had a Lightning loaner for a day. Under 300km range at 99% charge.....no idea if that's the little battery or not. Just running around town for the day(temp just below freezing) I dropped the range to 140kms. Yes I was fairly aggressive with it and really enjoyed the truck. But that range..... In town absolutely I'd own one. As a rancher hauling shit and going distance.....range is a big elephant.

Unless on a heavy hall road trip, there is generally no need to sit around and wait for the truck to reach a high state of charge while DC fast charging. Much more convenient way to do it is AC charge overnight or when the truck is not in use normally, wherever it normally parks while not in use.
@ZPdrumer2 ай бұрын
Right, exactly. in the video they mention you have to live differently with an EV and adjust for charging. And they're right, if you treat it like a gas car "only refill when its near empty" Its going to be inconvenient. But why not charge every time its parked? its so much more convenient (assuming you have home charging, or even charging at work). You never realize how cumbersome it is to go to a gas station until you don't have to do it anymore. Come home plug in the car every night and have a full "tank" the next morning. A simple level 2 charger 20 amp 20v (uses the same easy to work with 12awg romex we already know and love) will charge 32kw over an 8hour night. At about 2miles/kw you're gaining 60 miles a night. The average person in the us drives under 40 miles a day. so you can make it up every night. thats not even counting a much more comprehensive install of 30-60 amp circuits which only make at home charging faster. Save DC for road trips, and charge at home. People get so hung up on road trips and its not necessary.

Gets me to work and bring me back everyday without ever needing to stop at a charging station. Bad thing is it costs a fortune to plate in Quebec, and you will probably have to change your electrical service if you need to install a 80amp charger. That thing could tow a freaking planet if you'd try. On paper, it's limited but in reality, it's incredible.

I have driven 38,500 miles in 6 months, averaging 4.0 kWh. 0 issues. I drive 70% highway and is so very efficient. I travel an average of 200 miles every evening and usually have barely enough to get home and may have to stop and fast charge for 10-15 min once a week when I drive 250 miles Even though the Silverado will eat more juice and possibly get an average of 2.5 max with the kind of driving I do, but I could really use the space and not to mention, the charging would be way faster. Good balanced review. I do think though that any auto reviewer in 2024 who owns a home should have a Level 2 charger installed at home. You’re currently exemplifying a use case that basically doesn’t exist. Someone buying a work truck, towing regularly, but not charging at home. If you’re towing > 300km a day, probably don’t buy an EV truck yet. If you’re not, charge at home every night and you’ll never wait to refuel your vehicle again. Even if you do have to spend 30 minutes DC fast charging a few times a year, calculate how much time you’re spending every week at a fuel pump right now.
@aaronbounds13362 ай бұрын
More understanding of the charge curve is necessary. Same for charge time delay reasons. The two you listed are more or less correct, but there are more: I like the sports stadium parking lot analogy. When there is a huge parking lot with no one parked in it (empty pack) and a big long line of traffic to get in, but through just one entrance (the charge cord), the parking lot has no problem filling up steadily as there are spaces everywhere (low SOC). That equates to the first half or so of the charge cycle. Now, as the parking lot fills up, there are fewer and fewer space available, and since there is only one way into the parking lot (the cord), the cars coming in to the lot take longer to drive slowly past all of the already parked cars to look for a potentially open spot down a lane near the end somewhere, and eventually find a spot (50-80% SOC). As the lot nears capacity, the cars coming in may find one or two spots near the entrance from people who have left early (pack voltage balancing), but they arrive there to park way down the end of the lane near the entrance, but the spot has a cone or bollard in the way. Oops, sorry, have to go to the way back of the lot and park farthest away from the stadium entrance (high state of charge pack balancing). That took a long time. Overnight or off-shift AC charging works well, that way no one is waiting on the truck to recharge.

If your daily range requirement is less than 350km, and the vehicle parks overnight near electricity, there is no more convenient vehicle than an EV. @james20423 ай бұрын
@benhaze1010 electric trucks are not pointless, electric motors are objectively superior in every way, and towing reflects that. The issue is the battery. The BEV is what has the problems most people have, and alternate power sources for said electric motors are available. Ram is coming out with the ramcharger, which will have a pentastar v6 acting as a 130kw generator, and will be able to charge the battery near its full capacity, or provide supplemental power driving down the road. Edison motors is building a diesel electric truck kit for both larger class 6-8 trucks and smaller class 2b-5 trucks. Much much smaller batteries with significantly longer ranges as the battery is a buffer and not the primary means of electricity storage. Honda's hybrids have been evs with super tiny batteries and a gas generator for over a decade. The chevy volt and BMW i3 were evs with tiny generators. Smaller batteries for daily driving and a generator for when you need it, it significantly reduces gas consumption without having it as an option at all, and is the way we need to go. A ramcharger where the owner during the work day keeps it under 150 miles a day, and then has the gas generator for the weekend when towing the camper to the lake. Or using the onboard gas generator instead of a secondary generator for mobile power on the jobsite if used in a commercial application. Korea is working on hydrogen electric utility vehicles, as over in Korea the hydrogen fuel market is actually big enough to sustain But full bev trucks really only satisfy political agendas and city needs that have absolutely no range requirements so the batteries can be small, like delivery vans and municipal vehicles confined to an area.

The frunk only makes sense on pickup trucks, where you don't have a conventional water sealed cargo area. Beds are great for utility, but for stuff that has to stay clean like a backpack, your only option is the back seat, which is a problem if you're putting 4 people in it and the backseat is being used for people. Otherwise hyundai's strategy of putting inverters and ecm's under the hood without a frunk allows for more rear cargo space and a lower load floor. Frunks aren't necessary when you have a trunk. Even on a work truck like this, the frunk can be used for valuable tools, electronics, ect. Especially considering the whole extended bed that folds down into the rear seats making rear seat storage no longer protected.

I switched to a Nissan truck and love it, although, I do miss the better fuel savings of the vortex system.

For context: I own a 2021 GMC Sierra 3500 Denali. I test drove both the GMC Sierra EV and the Chevrolet Silverado EV and I must say the Chevrolet exterior looks better. The interior on the Silverado EV RST looks better compared to Denali EV. Driving wise both feel the same on the streets. If I had to choose one it’d be the Silverado EV RST. Still take my HD over both Denali EV and Silverado EV. Good video as always. Keep up hard work. 😊

No on off, security? How is my truck protected from theft? FOB spoofing is a thing, without talking security threats "No on/off" is a concern. Not sure the capability of the truck justify the price. EV is great, but not at that price. The F150 EV was originally priced well, due to fears of competition, but as soon as ford could they jacked the price WAY up then wondered why people lost interest. I still want to see the RAM Charger price. It's way more capable than this truck, but i fear it's price will be north of 80k CAN and perhaps 80-100k USD. Really good point about pre-conditioning battery for fast charge!

To question about not having an ignition/run button - The removal of buttons and physical controls is a mistake. Not saying things can't be moved to screens at all or be automated, but if the change doesn't improve the experience, safety, or convenience of the feature it simply shouldn't be done. Tesla and Rivian are wrong. An on/off switch is a confirmation that things will or will not move as well as a means to reset if something bugs out. HVAC and radio controls shouldn't require you to take your eyes off the road. There is no world where adjusting your AC vents on a screen is more accurate or convenient than adjusting it by hand. Your lights and wipers are critical to your safety while driving and should never be purely dependent on a screen control. If that screen goes out for any reason you could literally have no headlights or windshield wipers. Ultimately, there is a reason these features haven't really changed in their function in 100 years. Again, not saying we shouldn't try things but just because you can do something doesn't mean you should. Great review!

On and off switch on an EV car is redundant, once you unlock, you're using electricity. It knows move or don't move unlike ICE cars so no fear of it moving. I put my Tesla in autopilot if I have to use the screen while driving but other then that I use voice. Still have buttons for windshield. Tesla Model Y owner with 165k miles, haven't had a single problem.

Reasons I am not getting my CT. It’s the range stupid- or loss of range with towing- add a 20,000 range extender and loose your bed. I own 3 Teslas and know reality of EVs. There are very few pull through stations. Looking at Silverado for range , drop mid gate. Another important mention for EV pickups is powershare- with level 2 charging at home can also power home from truck- think the Silverado has this as well? The 2025 WT silverado has more range? Yes price needs and will come down.

Bro stop complaining its electric work truck, not a ice work truck judge it like wise on the features, the price part i agree with you. I think the caveat is the saving on gas or diesel, for me in a couple more years with mass production hopefully the price will go down and not kill it, because its to expensive relatively if you factor in fuel. Lastly that i know gas truck when towing get cut in help MPG wise.
@davemiller61213 ай бұрын
Lets be real, get the smaller battery that decreases range but increases payload and towing. My F250 gas only goes 500km on a roughly 125 litre tank. When I am towing my 16' dump trailer, it's far less. I eliminate gas or diesel and DEF with electricity. I rarely empty my gas tank on my daily cycles, but I do stop one to 2 times per week at the gas station for $175 fill up. With electricity, I get up unplug and go for about $16 per fill-up. The electric truck is sounding pretty good.

One thing that is good to mention about this vehicle. You can't pull up to a gas pump with your trailer on it. In order to charge your vehicle, you would have to take the trailer off of the truck and then move the truck to the charger. Once it's charged, you have to reattach your trailer and then go So there's an issue with space there and massively inconvenient, if you're going to do any sort of realistic trailering with this truck.
@nathanbrumbaugh85453 ай бұрын
Not a problem in most cases as you can pull through and charge. space to do it most or many chargers in my area allow for trailers.

@@christopherwoodyatt38 just adding a little bit, my personal vehicles that I own are Chevy bolts and Ford E transit I do pull trailers with both of these of course not quite the heavy duty that pick up truck would be…but I pull 16 to 20 foot trailers frequently and occasionally use a DC fast charger the one that I use that I really like is at meyers grocery store Tesla and Electrify America are both there with plenty of space to pull in from any angle you can imagine and there are many other locations that would not be quite as easy, but would not require unhooking the pick up truck from the trailer if you could find a charger at the end of the row or if the chargers are not very busy in Indiana where I’m at it is not nearly as busy as some areas so that helps of course also, the transit charging location is center front regardless of location. It would work well on most of our chargers here. but center front does make it better if you’re pulling a trailer I love that location. Wish they would do that on pick up trucks as well. Would just make it a little easier to pull in and leave your trailer attached if it is crowded at the chargers.

Ford stopped production Lightning’s for this year because of oversupply and low demand…but apparently GM thinks they can move these work trucks for $83k CAD.
@ProbeGT23 ай бұрын
They're not cheap, but they can work. The lightning can't do what this truck can. I have a construction company and i pull a cargo trailer everyday. Did not buy the lightning because it can't do my minimum 200km i need in cold winter (and not even in summer) so i did not buy it. Bought the Silverado EV because they put the equivalent of a tank a of gas in the truck. Range is exactly the same as my Sierra Elevation was. Around 700km no load, 300-350 when loaded. And every single morning, the tank is full. Really, if it fits your needs, it's awesome. Yes, the interior is only OK, but the driving exprience is incredible. It's so smooth, powerful and confortable.
