At B&Q there's a thing called a Boa. Its a rubber strap with a plastic handle. The strap wraps around the round thing your trying to undo and slips into the handle. When you go to loosen the round thing like fuel/oil filter your trying to undo, the strap and handle grab it and it gives you leverage on it. Job done in a jiffy. They work great on jars with tight lids too. While your there, get yourself a decent set of ring/open end spanners. That adjustable spanner your using will eventually round off the corners of the nuts and leave you in a right pickle. A ring spanner will look after the corners and keep your nuts in good shape. (No pun intended.) Wishing you many happy journeys. Cheers

Well done with your first service, when the alternator belt squeaks,it is not quite tight enough, this will create excessive ware, the reason it goes quiet after a while is that when the engine is not running for any length of time, the battery looses some of it's charge and on start up the alternator needs more power to put this initial power back, causing the belt to slip and as the charge builds back up the amount of power needed is less and the squeak dies away.

Looked fun draining out the old oil. If you’ve got room to store it, I’d be looking for a vacuum extractor - feed the tube in through either the fill hole or the dipstick hole (if there is one) and extract away. Modern car engines, particularly of German heritage don’t tend to have a drain plug these days so this is a proven method. I’d recommend undoing the drain plug to make sure it’s all out at the end though but this should be easier than trying to catch the whole lot.

Well done! I have done loads of engine stuff in my life (to be fair, never on a diesel engine), however, when I bought a narrowboat I got an experienced marine engineer to show me the BEST way to do it. Of course, I knew most of it, but there were some great tips that have meant subsequent services have been much less stressful! Also, having a few very cheap tools make it SO much easier. Make sure you collect these before your next service!

The belt squeal will ease as the engine warms and everything expands with the heat to take up the slack. It will return as the engine cools: give it a couple of weeks and retension them. Water or oil on the belts will also make then slip and squeel.

Not sure if someone’s explained this as I’m not looking through all the comments lol but when your belts squeak they are slipping and this causes them to get warm which does actually stop them squeaking because when the rubbers warm it grips better but slipping isn’t a good thing as it can cause the belts to snap when its bad. You need to slightly tighten your belts a bit more till they stop squeaking. Other than that you did a good job.

You really need a good tool set. A socket set is a must. Buy them with a swivel head. British engines are notorious for wonky angles. We bought a swivel heat set from northern tool for restoring our 72 MG Miget. You're looking at spending around 100 quid for a decent basic tool set and a tool box. Your alternator belt need not be VERY TIGHT. Place a palmed hand under the alternator and pull upward until firm but not stretching force. Use a ratchet ready to tighten the tension arm first to hold in place then the pivot bolt while applying light tightening pressure.

Thank you!! We haven’t actually done the gearbox oil. We know it doesn’t need changing quite as often but it’s on the list! Yeah we realised you can actually take the whole water separator off but felt that was maybe pushing it for our first service 😂 thank you for the well wishes! Give us a toot if you ever cruise past again! ❤️

juat working my way through all your videos and you said you cant get a potato fritta in most parts of the UK. if you ask for a potato scallop you should still be able to get them in most chippy's :) i have watched a lot of your more recent vlogs but im just going back and watching from the start now

if you can find a welder, cut a new hole for that ugly box on the roof and weld a plug into the hole next to the hatch cover. Nothing is unreparable
@BoatTime2 жыл бұрын
That makes me feel better! We’ve spoke to a couple of welders and they say the issue is the insulation underneath so fingers crossed we can figure something out! 🤞🏻

@@BoatTime there is a product here in canada called jb weld. It's in tube that get mixed together. You could use it as it's like metal, then sand smooth. Works on engine blocks so no problems with a roof.

That squeak sounds like a bad alternator bearing or something
@BoatTime2 жыл бұрын
It goes away when it’s warmed up so we think it was just new belts 😊

its a shame about that bowl. Have you ever looked up the art of 'kintsugi'? It is restoring broken items with gold, and the art of beauty in imperfections.

We did consider it! Would love to do it with something one day 😊
