I usually stop and go outside. That usually helps. Change of scenery, change of subject, taking a little movement break like going for a walk. I also switch subjects and make a note that we stopped in the book so I know I need to go back to it. I give them options, for example, let’s go for a walk and when we get back you can let me know if we are going to finish this or do (reading, math, French etc instead).

When bad moods happen I try to focus on helping me kids learn the coping skills necessary to deal with those situations. Small things can ruin a day, but often small things can also set it back on track. For example with my 8yr old that has adhd we’ve spent a lot of time focusing on emotional regulation and giving her the tools to help in those situations whether it be breathing techniques, taking a walk or just needing some time to regroup. For my oldest who is a preteen and the emotions are everywhere, it’s sometimes just as simple as validating what she’s feeling or going thru. Usually during these bad moments kids often feel a loss of control, so the more autonomy we can give them in the situation make a difference. I don’t think that means dropping everything, although there are certainly times to scale back. I also think kids learn coping behaviors from their parents as well. So if we easily give up or don’t address are own mental health the kids will naturally internalize that. So I think it’s two fold, teaching coping skills and demonstrating our own positive mental health techniques.

@@michellegf 100% for my child, in the moment itself doesn’t work but we always talk through them after.

I love that !! I strive to do this with my children too.. I think it is more important to teach them to cope Instead of dropping school .. my daughter is in a bad mood a lot of the time ... and we would miss so many days of school if we only homeschooled when she is in a good mood.

@ I think we all do, that’s what parenting is! But we’re also allowed bad days , mental health days, etc. Typically when we drop the textbook for the day other learning ends up happening while discussions were had. This doesn’t happen often for us , which is why I mention if you see your child traveling down a path that is different. My child for instance is adhd and struggles with dysregulation , I know that when she’s in those moments it’s best to walk away and figure out what went wrong and how can we make it better next time. Sometimes we go back to it, other times we take a break. But we definitely strive to cope not quit. Maybe I didn’t get that point across too well.

Thanks so much for this video. When my children have these moments I close the books up and let them watch a movie or something and get back to it later or save it for the next day.

@@blessedhomeschoolmess Love Math with Confidence. It worked for my first grader to bridge the gap between k-1st, however having games all the time and the parent guide being black and white just did something my brain did not like. Lol.
