I bought one of those new in the late 90s and still have it unopened to this day. I can't count the number of trips its been on and never used, better to have it and never need it than to need it and not have it.

This was my first kit, after military survival training in the mid 70s. The original, tobacco can, wasn’t really designed to be a comprehensive survival kit at all, but for summer day hikers on Mt. Rainier to stave off hypothermia when unexpectedly caught out. It was meant to supplement the ten essentials of hiking/backpacking. The kit you reviewed added several item off the 10 essentials list, knife and compass for example. Nice addition for your collection.

I like the idea of a tobacco tin that packs in a cargo pocket. Provided you were wearing a knife, multi tool & flashlight and had a few Cliff Bars and a bandana in your other pocket; maybe a 4mm drum liner in a back pocket you’d be set for a very hungry but reasonably safe experience in a camp limited only by your skill set. Remember what you carry in your pockets is always better than the elaborate kit left in the car.

I am actually reasonably impressed by that kit. As someone who's reasonably knowledgeable in the subject, I can see a wealth of possibilities in what they have given you. I appreciate that it is tightly packed, but I think one could get a useful small fishing kit in the bottom of the tin and a few feet of snare wire. As a non tea drinker (I'm allergic to tea), some coffee sachets are definitely going to get added.
@robertweldon79093 жыл бұрын
At least the maker of this little kit was clear about what it was intended for. The instruction sheet started out by telling you, in their own words, right up front, the very first rule of survival; Do not panic, sit down, get your head straight, and think things through. Then suggest to you just what to think and do. This little kit is really not bad. It was clearly not intended for anything where you have to survive for a long period, but would be great as an emergency kit for your car or truck. This was a neat little video, I think I'll subscribe and see what else you've got. Hopefully you are better than some of the other channels I've seen recently. ;-)

Cool. I have one of the older Prince Albert can styles. Mine, like some of my other kits, the bullion cubes some what melted and made a bit of a mess. Originally they were called Survival Kits but after people were caught out with the kits but didn’t use them because they didn’t think they were in a survival situation TMR changed the name to Storm Kit. Makes sense.

Sweet! As a collector and general nerd I know the thrill of finding some obscure trinket on Ebay. In very nice condition, too. I do wonder when it was made. There are bar codes and some items made in China which point to a modern build date yet there's nothing inside with a url or web addy. The Herb-Ox beef base is exactly, precisely the same as the box in my cupboard; I don't know how often they tweak their packaging but if I swapped a sachet of mine for yours you wouldn't be able to tell 'em apart. It might be fun to send snail mail to that address and see if they respond! Nice score, man!👏🙌

I first saw the smaller version of the storm kit in 1982 while working at Kings Canyon National Park in California. I never got around to purchasing one and I don't recall the asking price. The small grocery market located at Grant Grove village carried it on a regular basis.

Addendum: It just occurred to me that if you taped one of the Choghlans Survival Kit in a Can's to it, you would have a fair amount of capability inexpensively. Wouldn't be pretty, but they would go a long way towards keeping Mommy's Little Soldiers carcass alive for a week or two.

Hi... I ur subsriber.. also i love ur videos.. jst wanted to give u a hint for ur video colour tones.. as a photographer myself i am noticing that there is a slight yellow tint in all ur videos.. kindaof not true colour.. may be u need to do liitle alteration in the temperature selection in ur camera recoder, jst put it to auto colour...since sometimes our camera would give some tints of various colours due to the lights u use for the video. Auto temperature would match all ambience lights around us and produce good tone. Jst thought i would share this with u . No offence. Cheers
