Just a suggestion. If you buy this lock then don’t do other DIY measures as well. In particular don’t put washers on the cable bolts. A thief is likely to have bolt cutters and if they can’t easily lift the cable off they might cut it. Eventually they we see this lock and realize they can’t steal the tailgate. You don’t want them to damage your truck in order to find out that information. Keep your tailgate locked and install this sabellco bracket and that’s the best strategy in my opinion.

Rattling under vibration can remove paint and rust can affect the area, take the play out with some black tape.

Hi there! Thank you.. so helpful.. I am a handy girl (well maybe not a girl at 56 LOL) but looks simple enough.. I have a 2011 Prerunner Tacoma that I have taken really good care of..When getting it smog checked yesterday, the Tech said I should put a lock on the tail gate.. fI’ve ever heard of this.. I hope they make for 2011.. Thanks again!

Had to get this as mine was stolen even when it was locked! Thieves now know how to get around the factory lock.

Do you have to remove the black tab? I put mine on, without removing the tab. I also need to see if I can pull off the tailgate after I locked it. Also, do I need to turn the key: to the left or the right? The line on the cylinder looks like it is horizontal with the tailgate, after being locked? Thx

It locks into the location of the plastic tab. That's the reason for the removal of the tab. To lock, counterclockwise from 3 to 9 o'clock. To unlock, clockwise from 9 to 3 o'clock.

How strong is it ? Looks like it would be easy to pry off. My tailgate got stolen 3 weeks ago at Costco. Wish I knew about this stuff before hand. Had no idea this was such a huge problem. At least Costco got it on video, got license plate too. Hopefully Sheriff will go after them and maybe get it back. I can dream. 🤬🤬🤬🤬🤬

I haven't had any issues with it. I even forget that it's there. I don't know if it would be easy to pry off.

No. I never hear it making any sort of noise. I've actually forgotten it was there till I saw a neighborhood video on Ring of a tailgate being stolen.

I've had mine for at lest two years and needed to remove my tail gate today , i can turn the key but the lock will not come off.

There's a lock for the handle but this is added security. I'm not sure if some models come with an automatic lock but you can add one. kzbin.info/www/bejne/rGWtgq2CodSkbbs
