Love the junk removal/ dumpster rental portion, I do both, I started in dumpsters and added junk removal after. Most do it the other way around. It’s honestly different customers for me, people more money conscious are always going to rent a dumpster, they don’t see added value in someone else doing the labor. Junk removal customers value someone else doing the labor, they don’t have time, don’t want to be bothered by it, etc. Junk removal is definitely way more profitable, dumpsters are more scalable. They go perfectly hand in hand for my operation!

Speaking on pricing.... Do you charge Tax on your rentals, since its a "service" not a commodity? Do you surcharge for credit card payments, or is that all that built into your advertised pricing? Yes, depending on the rental zip code, I collect tax depending on the city. Others its not required because services are not taxed. Please check your local laws as this is something I would recommend guys not play around with. I do NOT charge for credit card payments ( the fee's rather ) not here or at my barbershop. I'll be honest with you... It really bothers me when a business ask me to cover their processing fee's. I do what most legitimate business's do... charge a little more for my service so the customer doesn't feel you nickel and dime them to death. Great question btw.

Mr. Junk. Love it! 😅. You’re spot on John. We’ve seen a massive demand increase for dumpsters and a decrease in junk removal. The consumer is more price conscious. 4 years ago they didn’t mind spending the money. Today, they don’t mind adding a little sweat equity to save some money.

We have always listed our prices online since day one. The amount of calls we have got from customers calling saying they booked with us because of the transparency of showing pricing.

At 1:26:22, great to see guys sharing business and not saying no to customers. Curious how you guys handle the liability with this. Also, how do you explain to the customer to sign your contract, charge their card but another company shows up? Or if you have different rates posted on your websites, how do you explain the difference to a customer?

Great question. The customers agreement doesn't change based on who delivers the dumpster. The customer asked for let's say a 20 cubic yard dumpster, we deliver atleast a 20 cubic yard size dumpster ( or larger ) So the customer is receiving the same or more than what they paid for. So there's more value delivered than they paid for. If Cory with Alpine is delivering for me, when he communicates with the customer he is always using the name Same Day Dumpsters and vice versa, if I deliver for Cory, I communicate with the customer as the driver for Alpine Dumpster Rentals. On the back end of the transaction, which ever business took the initial order, sends the final billing receipt as well for tonnage, additional days, speciality items etc. We have worked really hard together to make this virtually seamless for the customer and everyone wins, including the customer because they receive everything they paid for and in a lot of the cases more. Develop a strong network of guys with the same mindset and that are as dedicated to customer service and working together as yourself and its crazy powerful how much work can be shared between you. One of the better questions ever asked on this channel. Thank You.

I agree with 99% of what you said, with the exception of taking into consideration how much your comparable competition is charging. If dumpster rental companies A, B, and C are all within the same general ballpark, but you have to be notably higher to be profitable, that could be a realistic deal breaker to be mindful of. The average consumer only cares about the price, and that's just the reality of it in most markets. Everything is relative to your financial situation. I would argue that there is a price deviation amongst local competition that will keep you relevant, which will take a little trial and error to find that sweet spot.

You raise a valid concern with your analogy. Here's what really happens tho... Guys find out what companies A, B & C charge and they find out they need to be higher priced to be profitable to stay in business, so they "match their competitors price" justifying it as, "If my competition can make money at this price, then so can I." That's why I personally feel its irrelevant what companies A, B & C charge... It just doesn't matter. Great input tho, a very well thought out analogy.

@@samedaydumpster I'm tracking you. I guess my thought is that every dumpster rental business (or any business for that matter) has that break even and profit threshold. If that threshold dictates you need to be 15-20% ahead of your true local comparables to stay in the green, that's going to be a hard hurdle to clear for most.

I'd like to get into the business. I've been looking at the NPR gassers. are these worth the investment or do you recommend going to the heavier built gmc 6500 or Internationals? I'd like to start with junk bins because there aren't many in my area.

I don't have any experience with an NPR gas or diesel for that fact. What I recommend to everyone when purchasing any type of truck is to buy what truck that you have a strong dealer in your immediate area for. Trucks break, code out, recalls are issued and regular parts and service will be needed. You'll want a dealer that can get you into their shop quickly and ensure you get back on the road ASAP.

Agree with a lot of what you say, but when you are in a small population area, there are only so many pieces of the pie. Every new guy that pops up is cutting into my market share. I have 3 new what I would consider serious contenders in my area in the past year. Plus all the half assers. Bigger companies that have 100s of cans and been around for 10+yrs now have websites and social media. They are feeling it too. The pieces of the pie are getting smaller. Combined with high interest rates and slowing housing market, the overall pie has shrunk in the past 2yrs. I am fortunate to have continued growth over the past few years, but I bust my ass. Many 12-16hr days. That being said right now March looks like it may be the first month in 3yrs we have not had positive YOY growth. Still a week left, but more rain in forecast. Main factor I blame is weather, second factor is competition, but at the end of the day it is on me. Perhaps I got too comfortable and did not put in the extra effort vs my normal avenues.

Let me add. We run junk removal + dumpsters. I give the customer the option. We can drop a dumpster for x price, then we upsell the labor. Or if they call for junk removal and hesitant on pricing, I can normally sell them on the dumpster to meet their budget. Either way I get the sale, meet their needs/budget and the customer is happy.

It sounds like for your market with everything you explained, that having both is not only a great business... but required to take care of every customer. We are all experiencing more and more guys getting into the business, but that's nothing new and it's never going to change regardless of the industry. We must continue to evolve with our services, technology and our approach... and disrupting at times when required. Keep up the hustle my friend, sounds like you have a good thing going in your market.

At what point do you charge overage fees. Are you the guy who throws the book at someone if they're 10lbs over and charge your overage rate or do you have a threshold so maybe 100lbs you charge?

Every single dumpster gets charged "overages" I guess how you're wording it. Because I don't give away any "free tonnage or 1 ton included or 2 tons included etc... it makes it super easy for me, I don't have to guess at what point "I throw the book at someone for 10lbs." Everyone pays for their own trash, because I'm not sure in the city you live... but here in Salt Lake City, there isn't a landfill or transfer station that lets me dump my first ton or two for free.
