I think it was a good match. We paid for the lack of accuracy, but by no means I think we were worse. Barcelona fans can be quite optimistic after the match. Remember, that's the freshly rebuild team, Alonso played for the first time and the whole bunch played together for just a few matches. It's the details really, that decided about the outcome.

This Barca loss was reminiscent of Liverpools loss in the first leg to Barca. They were able to create plenty of chances but werent clinical enough. We all know how that campaign went for Liverpool. Unfortunately, Barca plays as always for the last 5-6 years - without clear idea what to do to score goals. Xavi was top 3 midfielders at his time , but he is weak manager. There can't be any comparison with Guardiola. Barca is my favourite team , but the truth is that we can't play against top teams. Nagelsmann changed his tactics in second half when he brought goretzka , and as a result they got much more stability in midfield and ball progression. He adapted to barca's strategy in the second half brilliantly.

Barça clearly back on track. It was the biggest test for Xavi's Barça after those like Atlético, Napoli, Valencia, Madrid, Frankfurt, Sevilla. And they were dominant at Allianz Arena in every aspect of the game for the first time in their history : more possession, more shots, more targeted shots, more clear chances, more danger created, better pressing. Well the title could easily be, "Nagelsmann's Impressive Tactical Changes Get Bayern The Win" Goretzka coming in at halftime and Mazraoui getting instructed to invert higher changed the game. The corner to get the goal came from Goretzka forcing a save from Ter Stegan and the team play for the 2nd goal was a result of the changes. I think after the two goals, Bayern felt comfortable enough to see the game out rather than go for more. Nagelsmann realized it wasn't really our day in terms of passing & sharpness and we just needed to win and improve in the coming weeks.

You were really only good for 20 minutes throughout the entire game and that was when Lucas scored from the cornerkick and the good goal from Sane. We were dominating from the very start of the game with Pedri missing a 1v1 in the 7th minute, and then Lewandowski missing another 1v1 in the 17th minute. Pedri also missed another 1v1 in the 62nd minute. We gave you room to breath by not rotating our midfield at half-time and you capitalized on the chance.

A good team wins games on a great day...a great team wins games even on a bad day. Barca's weaknesses= - Depending on Lewandowski - Sloppy man marking at a corner kicks - Busquets not being as fast paced as he used to be - A real Leadership player is missing...in the end it almost seemed like Barcelona just gave up. - Not adapting to Davies playing defensively and Leon Goretzka in the second half. Bayern München weaknesses= - Müller and Mane playing to similar - In the first half a classic 6 or holding midfielder like (for example) Javi Martinez could have stopped some of these counterattacks coming from the central area. - Sabitizer once again playing decent but without charisma and aggression. Sometimes being a mini Kroos isn't enough. The real Kroos also does these long distance shots....but with precision leading to goals. Altogether a great game. With the better team winning. Barca and Bayern both still need time to grow as teams...get use too having or not having Lewandowski. Barca needs a 2nd player to step up when Lewandowski is lacking. He used to have Thomas Müller as false 9 right behind him. I don't see a player like that in Barcelona....one that concentrated on assists and pressing, making rooms for Lewa - but then when needed is a secondary striker that can score when all else fails.

Not only counter attack, some of the high rate attack did so, like the second goal, busquests was still running back slowly and Sane just cut into that empty space and had an easy goal. But I don’t blame the players because xavi was using a very risky tactics to play against bayern.

Sthing very important we shouldn't forget was that Barça defenders were HIGHLY agressive against Bayern attackers (until the 1st goal) , which allowed them to push high and stay 4vs4 in the defense and win almost all the duels. This reminded me of Pep team in which players were very agressive. Tactically, Xavi outclassed Nagelsmann. But the spaniard should have cheer up his players when Barça conceeded the 1st goal. His players had spent a lot of energy and the conceeded goal was mentally hard to take. They obviously needed someone to tell them to stick to the plan and stay focused in the game. I remember Nagelsmann saying that most part of managing football teams was psychological, not tactical. Unlike all the analysis that I saw, Bayern (incl Uppamecano and Lucas) step up after scoing the 1st goal, not with the start of the 2nd half. I dont really understand Xavis reason to push up the cms like that. Its what Guardiola does but only when the fullbacks move inside to still have a 2 3 buildup structure. How Xavi does it basically leaves the whole midfield empty and puts enormous pressure on the gk, cbs or fbs to play very risky passes, also it leaves the team vulnerable in transitions through the center. As a result building from the back and controlling the game and transitions is difficult .

Inverted fullbacks require tecnhique and passing range as they are essentially a dm when they move inside to cover. Best example is Kimmich and the transition he (with help of pep) made from fb to dm. City have Cancelo (and zinchenko before) to do this. Alonso is a wingback who's main strength is stamina and licking that side line. Maybe Kounde could, but I think Xavi is reserving cb position for Kounde. You definitely need a RB, but it looks like Xavi is looking for a inverted rb type.

@@pnau92 Barca have enough players capable of playing like that. Guardiola used Walker there who is worse technically than any fullback barca have. Sergi Roberto for example is perfect for the role. Regardless if you use the inside fullback or not its just that Guardiola seems to have strict rules. Pushing up the cms means someone else moves into the cm Position like the fullbacks, using the cms deeper means one forward in the half space and overlapping fullbacks. In Xavis barca this is all much more chaotic and disorganized and i think this will be punished by top teams especially in transitions like we could already see against bayern.

@@JayzsMr Thank you for the good discussion. I can see that you are more knowledgeable tactically than the average footie fan. You are right that Sergio Roberto definitely is perfect for that role, but to be fair to Xavi, SR has been really injury prone since Xavi took over. I can see why Xavi is careful with introducing SR back. Apart of SR, there aren't many good options. After thinking about it further, there are multiple ways of covering for the attacking CM's. Guardiola has been doeing it with City as well this season with Bernardo playing as a winger and Cancelo sometimes pushing higher up on the overlap. Bernardo then falls back and covers like a CM. Obviously, this would require Xavi to bench one of Dembele or Raphinha and put de Jong on the wing as Dembele or Raphinha would never work as playmaking CMs. Also, Walker is and will never be an adequate inverted fullback. The only reason Guardiola does make him cover is because of Walkers speed to cover fast opposing attackers (like against Vinicius in Champions league las season and saint maximin this year). You can see this in his stats as well.

There several items that came up into my mind while watching (the whole game I could get rid of these) * Bayern was really aggressive in the midfield especially. Kimmih and musiala especially. They kick, push, beat Barca in order to make them panic * There was always lack of players to progress from the center, especially in the first third, busquets was closely followed by young musiala (indeed good game for youngster). * It seems like physics was a weak part for Barca midfield. They had strong opponents * Dembele 😔. If you are not able to dribble, just save the ball and don't cut the team, but he is not....

One of the most important things I observed is that Bayern played and outshined Barcelona due to experience and Barcelona were like a team with lots of talent but lacking experience. When you have Neuer or Courtois, the opponent would need to sweat blood to score goals. Stegen is not at that level and this is crucial. Busquets as a "pivote" is a weakness against physical teams like BM, cause he struggles to follow the opponent's midfielders on a back and forth game. Barça should arrange someone else at this position or make a transition with De Jong. Very good analysis!

Should have watched whole Match instead of replays, Davies was on fire tackling and winning the Ball numerous times for Bayern. It would have been sooooo fascinating if Barca had Mazraoui instead of Kounde at RB and and CB pairing of Kounde and Araujo. Mazraoui could invert or overlap giving Barca another rotation. If mazraoui inverted, there would be more central progression. But if he overlapped, Gavi or Raphinha could drop deep to assist build up and mazraoui I could overlap Raphinha of Gavi, whoever stayed higher. I wonder if Xavi made a mistake by not starting Roberto in that role. Also, going forward, Ansu has to start on the left. He just gives so much more than Dembele or Raphinha on the left. More final product threat along with more rotational options. Next year, if messi comes back, imagine if Barca had messi starting ahead of Lewy in a false 9. It was never the midfield that screwed up today, on the contrary the Barca midfield dominated the first 60 minutes of the game. The weakest link was ofcourse the fullbacks. Kounde was not a natural Rb and was played there to fill in a 3 man CB. It was Alonso who was the weakest link, there was plenty of space that was thrown open at the left flank and had it been Balde or even Alba there could've been deadly amount of chances created.

Messi was ageing, Suarez was way overweight and past his prime , griezmann was a bench player and did not start. If I'm not wrong ,, Barca had the oldest squad in the UCL that season. They faced Bayern with no real wingers ,no attacking midfielders and just two attacking outlets in Messi and Luis who we're well shut off by Bayern's hybrid back 3. That was a slaughter mate, that Barca was horrendous, I remember them bottling the league and parking the bus against Napoli, we got them at the right time and inflicted pain to them As a Bayern fan , I'm more pleased with the 7-0 in 2013, the first leg was a tactical masterclass, they only had 3 shots and 1 on target , that was Bayern nailing prime Barca down. Xavi needs to understand that sometimes, playing hardworking midfielders and a mid block at certain away matches will do the trick. Good analysis, but i think you need to add the xG map routinely to your analysis, FMS. The xG was a bit close (1,6 to 2,0), but Barcelona may deserve this win more than the real xG. Barcelona had 3 big chances while Bayern had 2. This means, statistically, Bayern would be more likely to get punished. But anyway, good analysis. I would be excited to see how will Barca do in Camp Nou against Bayern. As a Barca fan, this is indeed a step to the right direction for the team. Hope Xavi makes some adjustments-- Barca is always weak on the counter. Maybe we need to make Kounde a CB instead. I'm also interested to see how Nagelsmann will fare-- i think his Bayern is not as good as people hyped them to be. A pattern that i see is, unlike Flick's Bayern, they tend to struggle more against stronger opposition.
