Sharpen it the new way you tested for us the last couple of days. Low grit one side high grit other side. I sharpened a kitchen knife that would never stay sharp and the new sharpening method worked a lot better than I thought it would! The damn knife holds its edge now. I was ready to use it for a throwing knife :)

I Love the GI Tanto. Don't make the mistake thinking it's bad because it's cheap. I convexed my edge, cut the top guard off and with a dremel and a sanding drum made the grips that came with it very comfortable and grippy. The knife is a beast, and a bargain if you have skills to mod it. I prefer it over a lot of much nicer more expensive knives I own. Fantastic chopper/battoner.

I own many large and expensive fixed blade knives. This is the best one you can buy in America for the price. I often give this knife as a gift. It never disappoints.
@HarveySpectre4153 жыл бұрын
I bought one a while back. It's a heavy slab of steel so I wouldn't pack it, but it's a great fun one for messing around in the yard or whatever. My only problem was the screws in the scales came stripped from the factory, so I just wrapped the handle in hockey stick tape and called it a day.

This was my first fixed blade that was above mtech quality, and I have 2 of them that have lasted me 8-10 years. It is such an underrated knife. Bites really deep into wood, however it does eat your baton. But this is the perfect knife to get if you want to make your own handle scales, i made a set out of Brazilian walnut

I’m owning two of them and I really like them. Practicing frequently knife throwing with them. The weak point is that the four grip screws are getting loose and disappearing frequently. In addition I have bought two NedFoss Dragon Riot Tantos that are mid size and approximately six centimeters shorter than the GI Tantos thus much better for wearing it as a EDC fix-blade knife. The smaller size NedFoss Tantos are of similar steel quality, for my small hand size the grip is just excellent and knife throwing works pretty well too.

As a person who has served this is what you want in the military as you can never guarantee your knife will not be lost or destroyed in a given event and you might have to sharpen it with a real rock or old plate . Your edge will get dull no matter the steel but you want something you can resharpen quickly and you want something that will bend and not snap as snapping can be vary dangerous . Your knife will most often be used for tasks like opening crates , cutting rope , clearing vegetation or vary minor wood working. In the military you will mostly be wearing gloves while working and a fancy handle will be irrelevant . A good sheath is vary important as it means the difference between having your knife and not . I also like to have a knife that is not to rare as it gives up less information if it must be left behind ( something that was only sold in Norway no matter how good might let someone know a person from Norway was there for example ) Mora's are great in that regard .

These were one of the first "good" knives I ever bought after blundering into the Noss destruction tests on knifetests.com over a decade ago. I was blown away by how tough a knife could be for $20 (in the US). I never thought it was very attractive but now it's almost its own icon, and it was the first step on my knife obsession.

You need to get the "tanto machete" made by cold steel, it is only 13 inches long and I could split a coyote in half with that thing. I got it for 13 dollars (USA) and the price went up to $43, I just checked. That thing is my solo hiking emergency, and last resort self defence instrument, it is like two GI tantos in length not including the handle, and the same steel. I absolutely never go into the woods alone without it in my pack. I can pull it out of my pack while hiking in 3 seconds . I love it.

If it is then a custom handle could definitely be worth something with added value pretty good reviews on the durability of this knife thanks Pete for the heads up and the review
