Matt's GIANT Crankbait Bass!! Full Catch Footage!

Matt hooks up on this GIANT Bass almost a year to the day after Tim's MONSTER catch! We traveled several thousand miles, drove for hours on the water, and risked an INSANE lightning storm, just for a shot at a fish like this!
Smallmouth are AMAZING predators. If you've never had a chance to target them, put it on your bucket list! Smallmouth bass have traditionally been targeted with finesse tackle but that is changing. These fish are aggressive feeders and have no issue eating crankbaits, swimbaits, topwater, and a variety of other reaction baits.

This bass weighed 6.54 lbs on the certified Salter Brecknell Scale. She was sitting in a school of fish on a current break. If you catch closely you'll see how quickly the water was moving past the boat while we used the Ultrex Trolling Motor (link below) on Spot Lock to stay in place and make receptive casts to the same spot. While we don't show the entire clip, we had caught approximately 15 fish in the same exact spot BEFORE the big one bit! This is classing schooling behavior and something we've covered at length in other videos.

The Aldebarens have a very smooth drag as far as baitcasters go. I've got some pretty high end baitcasters, but the Aldebaren, though not the most expensive, just seems smoother than others. Not exactly sure why that is, but I'm more comfortable playing bigger fish on 110's with Katsuage hooks on an Aldebaren than most other reels.

Actually, yes. Matt and a buddy fished the Billy Westmoreland last year and finished 2nd. Dale Hollow is amazing!!

Dale hollow? No. You need to go to South Holston in E Tn. Legit chance at an 8+. A 25+ bag of smallmouth is common there.

Didn’t think there were any lakes in California where you can catch smallies that big. Only lake that has the near by is Shaver, and I’ve never seen one over 1.5lbs. Great catch!

Is your grip issue fatigue or pain? When you customize do you go to a mid or fat? Or shape? I've had a lot of relief with a mid and tacky but fat seems to make it worse! Btw Tim, you owe us two stories now :-)... 'Last year's PB Smallmouth' and 'Why you fish all the way back to the boat!' Over the years I've caught so many fish going from deep horizontal to vertical within just a few feet of the boat. I caught an 8lb spot at the boat that hit me so hard I had to disengage it, feed it re-engage and she still took me to the bottom in 30' of water. I went from Flatline to 120bpm and almost wet myself....

LIP RIPPERZ T.V. You have South Holston lake in your backyard. Lots of 5 to 7lb fish in that lake. Legit chance at an 8. 25+ bags of smallmouth are common there.

Smith Mountain lake is full of giant smallies too. When I say giant i mean 5 plus pounders. A truly giant and trophy small mouth anywhere in the country man. NEVER fished the South Holsten river but if you got a chance at catching a 8.25 pound smallie I will be fishing it soon.

That's a beautiful smallmouth. My goal this year has been to catch a 6+lb smallmouth. I had one on, in a tournament of all places and it jumped and spit the crank halfway to the boat. The way I know it was 6lb or close to it is I caught a 4lber right before it and it looked tiny in comparison!

Really nice fish matt! quick question for you, I want to get someone like yours or Tims opinion on this and I'm trying to decide whether to spend a ton of money on a few high-end combos like GLX´s and Aldebaran´s so 800-900 dollar combos but only be able to afford 3-4 rods, or buy 4-500 dollar combos and be able to afford 7 or 8 rods. I had to sell almost all of my gear and am getting back into things so your opinion on this would be much appreciated.

Congratulations Matt that was a beautiful fish. I’ve never caught a small mouth. Something I wanna do sometime. I’d like to upgrade my treble hooks on my crankbaits but there are different size hooks I’m not furmilair with. Is there a way to know what size hooks I need for each crankbait?

Also one good point on changing hooks just make sure your hooks ( after put the hook on the right way there is an up and a down on trebble hooks ) can't hook each other. If they can either smaller split rings or smaller hooks. I have bought brand new crankbaits went to use and would wonder why when I cast these hooks keep getting caught on each other and bait won't work. Changed out the hooks works great.

Man, I just can't wait till the Susquehanna and Chenango settle down just a bit more and that I hope it doesn't pour buckets at least every week if not twice like it did all last spring right to July, what a blown out season all last year was. I have so many new lures and techniques I want to throw at the smallies here! The year before was just phenomenal, a ten minute walk after dinner to the Susquehanna and I'd land 4-6#'ers like every 20 minutes till 1 or 2am like every night I went out on just one lure, an old old long discontinued #5 Mepps Comet with a white/black-dot blade. It'll be the best year to remember... but I damn sure want to try topping that!!
