I would love if you guys could do a review series on the differences between brands of rods. For instance, y’all have talked about St. Croix having slower actions than other rods (their fast is more modfast when compared to other brands). Or other things that stand out about a particular brand or specific rod/rod line. Another example coming from one of the $300 buyers guide vids, Matt talked about the Halo KS2 rods having a softer tip that showed deflection even more/better than other similar power and action rods. Could be done as just reviews of the specific brand per video but go into detail on the nuances that differentiate them. Could even include things like the warranty or variances in the different rod lines a brand offers. I’m sure that’s a ton of work but it would definitely help me out a ton when trying to consider what brand to purchase rods from.

😂 Hearing you say how much rods have gotten better got me reminiscing about my first quality rod and reel (or what was quality for me at that point) in the mid 80's. I had a paper route, and saved for what seemed like forever for a Berkley Lighting Rod, with the pistol grip, and a Ryobi baitcaster. That setup was mid $200's if I remember correctly. It would about break your wrist when a large bass would hit. My first large Northern on it was a real eye opener as a teenage kid. I was happy when longer handles became the thing... lol. BTW, I have that same Loomis crank bait rod in the picture, that's an older rod, but I still use it, has an old Shimano Calais 201 on it. 😊

Tim, somewhat confused on the GLoomis 968 and 906. You talk about the 968 for deep cranking but not a good choice for glidebaits, yet in the description you list the 966 - which is a lighter power - for swimbaits.

I 100% agree with you it gets annoying that rod makers don't go off the same code. Then you get to inshore where they make rods that can be made for saltwater and fresh that use the same actions and codes. They need to make a universal code for all rods regardless of the companies your average person can understand them.

It’s about time someone took a rigid rod and loaded it by pulling on the line to show the action, thank you. How do you tell how sensitive the rod is other than someone telling you that it is. I have actually taken a 15’ piece of line with a weight on one end and swivel on the other attached it to the rod and dragged it across the carpet floor to see how sensitive it really is was.

I'm not Matt or Tim, but I'm just going to say it. The GCX isn't even in the same realm as the St. Croix LTB in anything but price. The GCX is more in line with the Victory or Avid rods or even Mojo Bass. The LTB is more in line with the IMX Pro, Legend Elite/X are GLX/NRX and the Legend Xtreme are in the Conquest range.

I thought I had all the combos I needed but now I will be in my first tournament on Lake Okeechobee and need a flipping stick? I have medium heavy and heavy rods but they are for lures up to 1oz and then I have my medium heavy to heavy rods for a-rigs, big swimbaits and glide baits, one that goes from 1-5oz lures and the other that is 2-8oz. So for Lake Okeechobee, what do you recommend for a good flipping stick? What about my finesse combo? I know there are a lot of weeds so I will need to use more weed less presentations but what rod and line do you recommend- medium instead of medium light? Suffix 131 in 30 lb with a 10 lb FC leader?

Love y'alls content and I'm glad to see more - I'm not sure how to get this question to you all though so I'll drop it here and maybe you all can take a look. Disclaimer; I don't work for or own any stake in the company I'm referencing, just genuinely curious about it. I recently came across a brand of baits called Headbanger lures. Their stuff uses an interesting weight (or plastic "lip" for cranks) to make the bait wobble and dash around in a really different kind of way. I picked some up to give them a try though I haven't had much of a chance to put them to the test. Based on their ads, reviews, videos, etc the bait action is really interesting and they do in fact catch bass. I'm curious though; have you all seen these baits and what do you think of them? It seems like it could be an interesting new way of doing weighted presentations in deeper water, in the case of the weighted hooks they offer, and a more erratic and unique crank/wake bait action for higher in the column in the case of their cranks and wake baits. Thanks for reading and I look forward to pre-spawn fishing around my neck of the woods with y'alls guidance!

The lures that break those action rules confuse me some. Like the moderate jig rod or a fast for a jerk bait rod. Does the power of the rod compensate for the action that doesn’t suit the hook type?

What sized reel do you use on the shimano slx 7’3 swimbait rod, I’m going to pick one of those up because I think the short rod will be nice on a kayak but I’m decided whether a 200 or 300 sized curado or tranx would be best for 1-3 oz baits

you would be fine with a curado 200 and 20lb fluoro, it would fit nicely size wise on that rod

as a noob, the technique(s) that always confuse me are the companies that market topwater/jerkbait rods that are usually fast to extra fast when everything I see from guys like yourselves & others recommend separate actions for those 2 techniques?

Sometime blank materials plays a huge role. Cheaper rod blanks are more parabolic and works pretty well with Jerkbait and Topwater. Go to your local tackle store and start testing out rod blanks, you will be amazed.

Great explanation Tim. I really need a new full sized swim jig rod on a $200 budget. I was hoping for a recommendation for that! I love you how you guys include your preferred option and then a budget option but sometimes wish there was a bang for the buck or mid range recommendation for each video. Thanks for all you do.

What confuses me, is you say, beginners should use a medium spinning rod for all around finesse applications - What action tip? Med / Fast / Xtra Fast?

The action depend on your liking so you gotta go test out yourself. I recommend starting out with “Fast” action rod. The “medium power” is a great do everything rod from Senko to Small crankbait.

Anyone have any thoughts on storing rods when not in use. Mine are on the ceiling of the garage supported in two places. Is that bad? They don’t seem bent or stressed. Thanks.

It depends on how far apart the supports are and how much the rods bow between them. Rod racks are a better choice.

I feel like the best analogy I've ever heard on why we need so many rods is golfing. Golfers need a bag full of clubs depending on distance and situations they're faced with. We aren't using a 3 wood to throw a drop shot and we aren't going to use a wedge to throw a glide bait.

A decent medium or medium light spinning rod will do a great job with everything from pan fish and small stream trout to the biggest bass you'll ever catch, and even into light salt water fishing for flounder, porgies, snapper blues, and even very large blackfish (tautog.) If you want more diversity, the next thing I'd get would be an ultralight which you can use in lots of fresh water fishing. You can cast the larger swim baits perfectly well with that medium light or medium spinning rig, and up to two ounce weighted bottom fishing in salt water, though that is a bit of a stretch. One ounce bottom fishing no problem. If you want to really get "advanced," your next rod should be a fly rod. Now, if you get into surf casting or fishing for bigger saltwater fish from a boat, it gets more complicated.. I'm not saying this guy is wrong, just that he's a gear head, and you don't need all that stuff to become a very successful fisherman. If you go for northern pike or muskies, you'll need a heavier fresh water rod.

There aren’t any 6’10” medium SLX rods available for jerk baits, I only see 6’10” in medium fast. I believe medium fast is not soft enough for jerkbait fishing. Any feedback will be appreciated.

LOL it's actually extra fast but who's counting. I think they may have suggested that one for jerkbaits before and perhaps they tried it and it worked for them. I'm looking for a shorter spinning rod for jerkbaits, shad raps and poppers and noticed lew's TP1X has a 6'10 M MF rod. 6th sense and abu garcia do around that price point. I actually went to the store to buy that TP1X since it is on sale but didn't like it for that application after holding it. Good rod though and I have one of those (7'3" H F) for frogs that I like. I eventually noticed they had a 6'6" st. croix triump ML F next to it and that felt like a much better fit for me but like Tim said ultimately its up to each person and what feels best for them. The st. croix rods are a bit softer and that one I mentioned is very soft even though it says fast action. Good luck.

It helps to know what size/depth jerk baits. I throw Staysee 90 or 110 size that are +1 or deeper just fine on the SLX 610 M. Vision 110 or similar on the Expride 610M and smaller baits on GLoomis 842 SJR Works for me…

The Bass X in Extra heavy or Extra Extra heavy. St.Croix rods do tend to be a bit heavier than advertised so i think the extra heavy or even just heavy would be ok. I wouldn't recommend throwing the max weight that the rods say tho. It may say you can fish up to 5 or 8 oz but you'd most likely break the rod attempting a cast. Another alternative if you're not feeling the bass x or slx would be the Dobyns Fury 806. Similar in price to the BassX. @@CasualBassGuy

I think the easiest way to explain different rods is to compare to golf clubs. If you’re in a sand bunker, you could try to get out with a 5 iron, but using a sand wedge would probably bring better results.
