I was involved in a CQ gun fight (5m) on 12th August 2020 at 11:53am. During the some 4 seconds of contact seven shots were fired, 3 by myself and 4 by my assailant, one of which hit me in the chest. I never saw my sights the entire time, it became more like instinctive shooting.

If you are in a food court and some lunatic opens fire 40 yards away--- you NEED sites. If you basically get ambushed at close distance--- you probably need to point and shoot. My thought process is to practice in the most varied situations that I can think up.

I've just recently been shooting regularly and wanting to improve my accuracy...I started using iron sights, shooting slowly and working on center target. I now begin with iron sight and then go to point and shoot from low ready or appendix with both eyes open. I've never used optics as I don't want to "rely" on something that can malfunction. So far, I can stay in a 6" circle with both my 9mm and 22 pistols from 20-30' distance. Next I will go to draw from holster and then work on speed. I do alot of dry fire at home hoping to build that muscle memory! Thanks guys for great videos, I learn something from each one you post!

Cool story. Take your optic off your ar and your scopes off your bolt gun. Practice. Great. But the regurgitated I don’t wanna rely on. Stop. We have optics on rifles. Why not go back to irons then. Or. Maybe have suppressor hight irons on the pistol so you can lower 1/3 co witness. Optic is dead? Cool. You still have irons to use and a nice picture frame to square up the person before you smoke check em. Come on man. I’m so over the it can fail red dot pistol bs. As of we have been running back up irons and conwithnessing irons on rifles for 2 decades.

I was in the Military 14 years and 25 years State Police SWAT. A lot of officers they have never used their sidearm, I can not say that! I used mine once while assisting the Narcotics Unit on a reverse buy. It was a dark night and I was carrying a SIG P220 (.45 acp). Back in those days their were no Pic rails on Pistols so weapons lights did not exist ...except for the weapon light mount that I invented and patented. I fired 5 rounds into a 6 inch group, in the dark (using my weaponlight) at about 10 yards. I do remember seeing my sights on at least 2 of the shots. I also did a Tactical Reload after the last round was fired.

Ignore everything this guy said. The simple answer is NO. You don’t see your sights when you are new to combat situations. Everything and I mean EVERYTHING you do is instinct and muscle memory. This is why training is important. After the situation is over your hands will shake and your body will feel weak. You will have problems remembering details about the encounter.

Sure, first time ever facing a threat, one often just will see a blur of sights or optic dot....But past that first time it, gets a lot easier to focus. And for a few everything was in focus.

Probably something you don't want to mention during a self defense shooting investigation without some REALLY good legal advice. _Especially_ if you don't get charged criminally, there's likely a civil suit following up. No lawyer here, but I can imagine the adversarial attorney (TV style) "You said you _didn't see your firearm's sights, but you shot anyways_ ?" "Hmmmm...sounds reckless and irresponsible."

I ama retired cop and firearms instructor and have been in one gunfight. Let me say that if you get in a typical gunfight it will be at a distance of 10' or less. At that distance you don't need to use your sights if you practice correctly. When you draw, point the gun at the target and get that first shot of quickly. Don't worry about your stance, you hold on the gun, getting the proper sight picture or any of that textbook stuff. Get that first shot off and get it on target. Then, if your opponent is still standing, take a better hold on the gun and keep firing until he goes down. That first shot on target is the thing that is going to win the gunfight.

This is good info fellas, thank you. I've noticed at times when shooting up close and fast, I don't see the sights, I never noticed them. It's more less point shooting, but as distance begins to increase and speed starts to decrease, the more I see my sights as I slow down to increase accuracy. This speaking from pistol shooting. My fundamentals are the same, but I feel like I just look past the sights and eyes are on target 100%. With my AR, using a red dot, yes, I always notice that dot. I'm not prior military, just a prepared citizen, but I have been in one incident in which I had to use my 12 gauge and it was discharged at the aggressor. Long story short, was enjoying a night of star gazing on state land in the vehicle with my son's mother. A group of individuals was being aggressive towards myself and my son's mother, who was pregnant with my son at the time. I had my shotgun so I pulled it out of the vehicle, I was target shooting with my cousin just hours earlier and we went out stat gazing before going back home in the city. Mind you it's pitch black in the forest, can only see what is illuminated by the rear tail lights of the vehicle, so about 15 ft at best. These individuals parked their truck down the trail about 100 or so yards (guessing, couldn't see, basing estimates on sounds alone), I could hear footsteps approaching. Yeah, I was scared shitless, lol. Heart was racing 100 miles and hour and I remember having cotton mouth too, but I was still able to think and use judgement. I moved towards the our SUV behind the tail lights so I would be harder to see and as the footsteps came closer, still nothing was in view. Suddenly, I saw muzzle flashes and heard the shots. A 22lr is much louder than I figured it was, then again, I'm on the dangerous end of it ( I figured that's what it was from the sound report, but confirmed later by the detective). Our back window instantly shatters and luckily my son's mother was hunkered down low into the front seat. I remember seeing a flash from my left side and when I did, I pointed the shotgun and fired one shot. I heard lots of screaming and yelling and these individuals sounded like men, so I know it was males. They ran back to their truck and about a min later, they took off. I called 911 and a sheriff came out about thirty mins later. Wasn't surprising since we were a ways out there and it takes a 4 wheel drive to get down this trail. Told him everything that happened. I knew I shot the guy, but the kicker is, I shot all my buckshot earlier, I only had some waterfowl loads left and it was the low brass #6 shot. No blood or anything, but it took a few hours for everything since our vehicle was shot and the proof was there that warranted my actions. The next day an individual was arrested after going to the local hospital for 29 pellets in his face, neck, and chest. I was rather impressed by this, as I told the officer, I couldn't see the guy, not even his silhouette, I saw muzzle flashes, probably about 15 yards away so I pointed and shot in that direction. I pressed charges and the guy was fined around $8k dollars plus all the fees to repair our SUV, then he was slammed with aggravated assault with a deadly weapon. They were gonna go after possible attemped murder charges but he took a plea deal, which I was fine with, since he was still sentenced to 15 years in prison and has about the same kinda sentence depending on the judge. He had a rap sheet so he was not new to the system, so I figured that also played a part of that 15 year sentence bit who knows. Surprisingly, I never lost my shotgun, police seemed to be little interested in it. I have seen a picture of this guy, he's got some scars like he had bad acne from the bird shot and he's blind in his left eye, I guess the eye injury is what prompted the hospital visit. I later found out he was in the hospital for three days and quite a few hours of surgery. This all took place in 2009, so he'll be out by 2024. Funny thing is, his reason was that he thought we were the fellas out earlier that day shooting guns while him and his partner was out bow hunting for deer. He just wanted to scare us is what he said. Shooting at someone is scaring them, that's attempted murder imo. This is already too long, I know lots of details are missing but it's the short end of the event. The other guy, he got lesser charges as they only found one gun, so he was charged as an accomplice and I don't recall what his sentence was exactly, but I do know it was less, he's out now. I don't live in that state now, but I can tell you, looking over your shoulder is an everyday thing now and it sucks, but I have no regrets. I know for a fact, these other two men cannot say the same. Now, if circumstances were different, if I had a pistol or an AR with a wml, it's hard to say how thing s would have went, I could have shot one guy but been shot by the other. However, I'm glad I had my shotgun, I grew up shooting shotguns and still even to this day, I have more rounds sent down range and more trigger time on that shotgun alone than I do on all my AR's and pistols combined. This was a pump 870 express 12 gauge with a 28" bird barrel and bead sight. I know I didn't short stroke it, I remember slamming that pump so hard to the rear and forward again, I thought I damaged something, but I didn't. This goes to show, if you build that muscle memory and your familiar with your firearm, this all helps tremendously in fast and accurate hits. It worked out they couldn't see me, but still, it's an event that sticks with me everyday and I'm probably a bit more paranoid now compared to the average person because of it. I understand that paranoia aspect of it for individuals who have gone through as such and I can't imagine how it is for some military members, they have my upmost respect. God bless y'all and God bless 🇺🇲💪

When I was in my last gun fight I did not see my sights ‼️ I am well trained but did not even think to look down sights. After the attacker shot me in the leg muscle memory took over and I just snapped into action. Just in case you're wondering I put those bad guys down. Four shots to the midsection leaving the first attacker needing a prosthetic hip. Four shots to the upper mid section of the second attack now he requires a poop bag. It was all training and muscle memory.

Wild Bill Hickok had a gunfight with a Davis Tutt at 75 yards. Tutt’s shot missed, and Hickok’s shot hit Tutt’s heart. It was a well documented fight, especially because Hickok stood trial for murder. If you google Hickok’s pistol, it had a teeny front sight, and a small gutter rear sight.

Good discussion guys. As you guys made your points it reinforced, for me, the need to train and become proficient (or better) on a variety if skill sets. For example, very close/immediate threats that may require “instinctive” shooting vs use of sights. There is no one answer to an almost endless variety of possible scenarios. Train, train, train and be ready for as many possibilities/probabilities that seem reasonable to you and your situation (and that your ammo budget allows for 🤣). 👍

My experience is only in competition but is basically the same as described. I actually just shot a “hose it” match today in which all the targets were within 10 yards or less. I remember moving positions and very briefly registering my hits but I don’t remember seeing my dot at all while still getting all scoring shots. But I’ve done thousands of reps in practice so I trust my trained index to naturally lay the sight over the target I’m looking at. If I need to take longer more precise shots , I’ll definitely dial it back and see my sighting system.

The sidearm is an extension of your arm really in a life threatening, stressful situation. It's just pushing your arm forward and pulling the trigger under 30 yards (sidearm range) which is why I don't understand optics on a sidearm. A laser yes, but optic imo is not something I would use.

I think another thing that happens, is the memory of the shooter gets warped in interesting ways with a fear response. So you may have actually used your sights, but your brain didn't see that as critical information. So you completely forget that you used them. You just remember that you saw a guy with a gun, you drew your firearm, extended out, and fired. Most people can't even accurately recount how many rounds they fired.

At my old job, we had a law enforcement type video trainer with the co2 guns and laser system. It also had a video capture of the person using it. It was pretty neat after the scenario played out, we would debrief the engagement with the "investigator" and he would ask all types of questions. Color of the shirt, how many rounds fired, etc. So many details were forgotten when you are in that engagement mindset. We were not Navy Seals or HRT mind you, but you could see the difference in those with combat arms background and only the experience and training from the job. Mostly in ammo usage and awareness.

Luckily only one of us died and I was badly injured but the thing I was most greaful for no innocent people were hurt. Train, train, train and when you are worn out train some more. You can never train enough. In closing anyone who says the weren't afraid in situations like these is a liar. We all get afraid.

When I present my gun, my irons are exactly where I am looking at, SO…. when I shoot on the range, I definitely am not hard focused on the front, but I am also not hard focused on the target. I am somewhere in between. I know I can shift focus between both while looking through my sights with the gun presented. I’m not expert, just saying what I do. I have total trust that when I present a pistol the sights will be there, so when I fire, I am more mindful of the movement of the gun up in recoil and back down to what I am looking at, than I am about perfect sight focus, because I know the gun will be there. You gotta trust guys like Kyle Lamb and Pat Mac when they continually harp on using your sights. It’s super important, but not necessarily as the be-all-end-all of aiming, but as a useful ruler to gauge the coordination between your eyes and the presentation of the gun in relation to what you’re looking at…. which is why I think sights are absolutely critical, as opposed to pistol red dots, because the sights are tied directly to the gun itself, as opposed to a hovering dot.

99.9% will not remember seeing their gun in their hand much less a sight or sight picture. Aiming, per se, is for practice times- controlled reflex pointing is a more correct term. Eyes on the target bringing gun up into peripheral. This is where practice comes in - lots of time and ammo. You’re NOT scoring points, you’re pointing center mass. With enough shots at body sized range targets you will be amazed how quickly you can train yourself to hit multiple center mass hits and you will not be “ sighting” like your trying for all 10’s. At least that’s what I do. Yes, I see the front sight but I’m not looking at it.

most of our sighted lives we are in near or total darkness, rendering sights unuseable. Additionally, time is not going to allow for all the target shooting you see promoted online. The mind can't switch from peace to red light in enough time to allow for more than point shooting and lucky shots, unless you are in a war zone where you antespate being in combat. Think about just enjoying a walk in the sun, suddenly knife charges from the bushes feet away.

If the target is in my face, no, I will not even look for my sights, but if they are something like 20 yards away, the sights aligned on the target will be what I look for in order to pull the trigger.

I've often wondered if the cowboys in movies or real life actually were able to point and shoot hit , I have seen the modern cowboy fast draw guys doing shoots like that and they are that good, but these guys live it , that's all they do ! Next time I go to the range I'll see if I can do it from shoulder hight at 25' , I do have Colt replica's 22lr to try with, I'm not sure if I'm gonna try with the G-45 , guess if I was scared bad enough, I'm more afraid it might jump out of my hand . You don't know if you don't try .

I did a close quarter combat/room clearing, shooting fixed paper targets. I tried hard to get in my own head and make it as real as possible. After the 1 minute drill was over. I 100% knew I was pointing and shooting. Get lead flying is where my mind was. Kill the bad guy. First to shoot. I pointed and pulled the trigger. I’m simply being honest about my own experience. I’m not ashamed. However I’m disappointed in my own results.

In my experience, 3 times in which I drew my weapon in the line of duty, i did not "see" my sights in the first few miliseconds. Its not untill the next 3 or 4 seconds that I became aware of my sights. It took X (unknown) amaount of seconds before you actually see and use your sights. All three times were sort of fast, but not necessarliy furiouse becouse I had already created distance. My first move periode. I tend to move and trianglate so I guess that breaking contact as I draw helps set the scene to enguage my sights eventully. In real fast and furious force on force training, especially when grappeling, ive never bothered to use my sights. Just stick the barrel into what ever part of the body was available and "shoot". Once even resorted to just beating my opponent with my FOF trainer gun because it was faster and easier. I think the biggest key to anything is either breaking contact (distance = time) or straight up charging right into the person and gut shooting them. My scariest moment however was the guy who I truly believed was goin to pull the trigger but did not. Im talking 6 feet apart, gun in his pocket. Mine in low ready. 3 seconds of staring and then he just turned and walked away into the dark. That one haunts me more than any other.

This is why I like lasers. Quick target acquisition. Keeping both eyes open and focusing on front sight only. Ive never been in a gun fight, but to have quick target acquisition and 180 degree (peripheral vision) view of your surroundings could be the difference between life and death. My opinion only Great video guys

Lasers & laser aimer units in 2022 is somewhat dated. Few ccw users or gun owners in 2020s add lasers. Red or green. I own a weapon light with a green laser. I rarely use it for home defense but in theory it could have value. As a regular ccw add on? No.

Back in days of old (when dinosaurs roamed and the Earth was still cooling) there were no colored or tritium sights. Just black. All we had tiny black sights and nothing else.

I’ve pointed my gun at a car that was inching toward my family during a camping week. We heard tires squealing and gun fire as they entered the camp ground. We were camped in a spot that was one way in and same way out. This carload of thugs pulled up to the bridge into our spot. I had positioned myself behind a stump. Father in law was near the van and inside the van were our wives lying on the floor. I had the two in the front seat targeted with a line drawn on the bridge before I was going to shoot the engine. They approached the bridge slowly and then decided to retreat. Why I don’t know but I can say they did not see either one of us. Was I really going to shoot without a definite threat to our lives?…I’ll never know.

No argument here. Another thing to consider is peoples ability recall information after a critical incident. Thankfully, I’ve never been in a gun fight but I have been in critical incidents as well as taken post incident statements from people who have and details get fuzzy. We see this a lot with eye witness testimonies. 5 people can see the same thing and give 5 different statements especially when it comes to specific details and timeline of events. So while I agree that most people involved in a self defense shooting probably don’t see their sights, there is a possibility that they did and just don’t recall doing so.

Setting up your home defense or conceal carry side arm with a laser is also a good idea. You still have your iron sights which you should practice with . This in case a battery failure on the laser . The laser will allow you to watch the laser point of impact without being directly behind your firearm . In your home you can use your tactical flashlight to blind the perpetrator and keep most of your torso hidden . Hope and pray is right . Hope and pray you never have to be put in that position .

One would believe that a lot depends on if your firing the first shot without the assailant knowing your there or weather you are drawing & returning an assailant's fire. The first would be sights & the later would be muscle memory or instinctive return fire while seeking cover.
