Seeing Sacramento reach the final is the reason why I love the US Open Cup. It gives USL teams the chance to face off against MLS teams. While I enjoy the MLS, the USL has grown on me. And we need to support our domestic leagues as much as possible. I’m happy that my community in the Antelope Valley in Southern California will be getting a team next season in USL League One! Same here! My community, the Antelope Valley in Southern California will be getting a team next season in 2025! AV Alta FC! They’ll also be in USL League One! They had the Crest and team name reveal yesterday evening. I was so happy to see the turnout and the interest people have for this team. The Antelope Valley has a very large soccer community and it keeps growing. To have a team to call our own is just great!

Chelsea fan for 50 years, used to see the Cosmos in the 70s. Never cared about US club soccer until last year. There's a USL2 team called the Hudson Valley Hammers that plays walking distance from where I live. Tyler Adams is one of the founders and he was at a few of the games last year taking pictures with kids. The best thing about it is it's a 12 game season, six home games, $50 season ticket. The whole season is during the two months that there's no European club soccer. One of our players got called up to the T&T national team and another is a pro in USL 1 now.

I support the Birmingham Legion, my local USL team. I’ve been to almost all of the Home games in all competitions since the start of the 2022 season. I still love the MLS though and I still watch the MLS every single weekend. I want both leagues to exist and I want them to eventually cooperate and come together to make soccer better in this country. We can only get so far if they always fight with each other.

@@dasalsakid when I watch MLS, I don’t look at it as supporting MLS as a league and as a business model. There are still a lot of genuinely great clubs and great fans in MLS and I want to enjoy that. I don’t want to see that go away. The people of Columbus, for example, don’t deserve to lose their team or to have to start over just because league management is not desirable to some people.

I agree, but it seems like MLS, Don Garber are too arrogant and won't let that happen because Garber is also on the board of US Soccer Federation, which is a conflict of interest being the MLS Commissioner. As MLS Commissioner on the board of the US Soccer Federation he actively works against USL as he sees it as a competitor to MLS and it's profits and as a single league entity. USL works much better. It's a more traditional league, just without as much money.

I've never been a fan of soccer, but since my son started playing I wanted him to watch some to get a feel for how he should be trying to play and we went to a Legion game since it's the closest to us. It was pretty fun and it was one of the open playoff games where they had really good attendance. Haven't been this year yet, though, but I definitely recommend it for anyone in the area.

The problem has been some MLS teams not taking the Open Cup seriously until the Quarter or Semi Finals; They would use their 2nd team with maybe one or two starters. There have been upsets but when you look at the rosters as to who played it clearly was nowhere near their first team. While I can understand some rotation because of schedule anything less than 5 or 6 starters is not a good look.

USL/MLS really need to work something out. Having two separate "1st division" leagues would just split the fanbase of a sport that is already not even a top 3 sport in the country. Already have to compete against leagues like NFL, NBA, MLB, and NHL for viewership and revenue.

What "two separate 1st division leagues" are you talking about? USL Championship is designated division 2 by the USSF, and the vast difference in finances (think NFL vs UFL / NHL vs AHL / MLB vs AAA / etc) supports that point of view..

I watch a lot more USL than MLS. Being from KY I cheer Lou City all the way I can confirm Lou city fans can get crazy in the supporter section. Kentucky much less the city of Louisville doesn't have any big time pro teams so when they have a team that wins the championship back to back and is always around the top of the table Lou city has a lot more local fans that devote everything to the team instead of having split interests. also I am not paying for MLS season pass when I already have ESPN + where i can watch the FA cup, Carabaro cup, the EFL championship, bundesliga, La liga, NCAA soccer and of course USL championship USL one, and USL two.

I've been checking out USL matches on KZbin and like the variety of teams in this league and the closer community ambience. I think my hometown of New Orleans is in line to get a USL franchise. And then there's the "non league" levels below USL such as the UPSL, which already has promotion/relegation built into its structure. There is a whole domestic soccer culture in the U.S. beyond MLS which is worth exploring. BTW, there is a New York Cosmos currently playing in the third-tier NISA league, which adopted the kit and legacy of the original NASL side.

We need a secondary continental tournament with CPL, USL, and other smaller N.Amer countries, with the winner getting a spot into the CCC, like S.Amer. Also, MLS just needs to have between 2-4 ULS teams into the league, with a playoff between top USL table teams and the previously invided "promoted" usl teams from the year before. Apple would definitely pay for this extra playoff. Which would cover the invited uls teams salary for that year. So no expensive taken from MLS even.

I live in Omaha and Union Omaha is our USL One team, a promising team who already won the league and is about to build its own stadium and the city supports the team. It will be interesting to see how the league will be in a couple of years considering that I work with strength and conditioning with some of those athletes.

Union Omaha supporter. Brand new stadium coming to our downtown area - gunning for a spot in USL Championship. We are giant killers - 2 MLS heads mounted on the wall. Consistently the best run organization in USL 1. Come On You Owls (COYO)

I've been an LAFC season ticket holder from day one, but since my family is from New Mexico I've always unsupported USL New Mexico United as well. I'm over the MLS structure, and almost relinquished my season tix over the Open Cup debacle created by MLS. MLS exclusion of USL is just another money grab by Garner, and hurts the domestic game rather than helping.

Hello from Omaha. I will always support Union Omaha, they have won the USL 1 division once and had a chance in their inaugural season in 2020 but the championship match did not take place due to Covid. Omaha is building a new stadium in downtown Omaha by 2026...really hope that Pro-Reg will happen by then. # Viva Buhos!

You’ll know about my Union Omaha. Currently USL1, but after their new stadium is completed in 2026 expect them to play in USLC! Hopefully they sign Diego Gutierrez, because he and I played soccer together for Ralston High School.

MLS buried itself with Apple TV. All usl needs to do is get a decent Tv contract and some interaction with fan bases and it could take off. I live in NJ. We live conveniently close to Philly Union, NY Redbull, NYCFC and you wouldn’t even know those teams were active and playing. MLS seems to do as little as possible to reach out to new fan base. Paywalls is what killed Boxing. Prime era Tyson was the only reason people tuned in and payed. Apple TV is dependent on end of career Messi.

We used to have an USL team here in Puerto Rico and the games would draw around 5k. That was impressive for a place traditionally known for baseball, boxing, and basketball. In fact, the municipal stadium they played at used to be the home of a winter league baseball team and the pitch was redone just for football because USL drew more over the course of a season than winter ball did... I miss the PR Islanders!!!

And I am absolutely sure that the recent spate of Puertorican youths being signed to European pro academies is 100% the result of having had a pro team here at that time.

What are the requirements to become a first division league in the USA? USSF should allow USL to be a first division league so it can compete with MLS.

That would be nice, but if you didn't know. Don Garber the MLS commissioner is also on the Board of USSF, which is a conflict of interest and he actively works against just that(USL achieving parity with MLS). It's all about money, competition and fear.

Great interview. The MLS is detestable top to bottom. The leagues “own” the teams and so there’s no real difference in culture between teams. I love the USL’s decentralized structure. The MLS also doesn’t respect the players or the fans and now it’s really just like wrestling, they try to rig the games so Messi scores more Miami wins and they sell more subscriptions. I wish I could get involved with the USL somehow and advance everything Greg is talking about.
