For the record, you can turn off the giant outer ring on the Holosun 509R ACSS to save on battery life. Then you just have the chevron reticle. For those shooters who appreciate the outer ring but hate the battery life being so greatly reduced, they've found that the outer ring helps with training. It teaches you to find your reticle faster and maintain consistent presentation, but then during serious use it can be turned off when you're confident enough to use the chevron alone. You can also turn off the adaptive brightness feature so it's totally manual brightness only. The shake awake feature can be turned off too, but it's a nice feature. It takes almost no movement to activate the reticle, so don't worry about using this feature on a duty weapon.

I have the 509 Vulcan on a G45 and the RMR on my Sig XTen. I like both quite a bit. My last department required us to run ACROs on G17s. I had a P-1 that I destroyed during a training. The P-2 was a huge improvement, but it still had such a super narrow window box that under stress it made it had to find the dot. I also shoot guns that aren't glock and if you get used to presenting other grip angles, like the Sig for example, the Glock doesn't immediately line up on presentation when you transition back to using that platform.

I'm not going to lie, I was one of those "old guys" that thought optics on carbines was a mistake. I was never in the service, so my opinions came from a law enforcement background. I've used optics on my competition handguns since the mid to late 1980's. Back then the battery life and durability of the then new Tasco ProPoint tube dot sights. We all had two for every handgun because one was usually back at Tasco to be repaired under warranty. I would have never considered one for serious use. Fast forward, all my working carbines has a quality optic, and in the past few years I've even been carrying with an optic on my carry guns, now that it's been proven we can rely on them. I'm old and stubborn, but I'm willing to accept new technology, sometimes. I still like my flip phone! Just kidding.

While I do not think red dots have any practical value for typical CCW ranges, there is *no question* that they massively increase hit probability at long range. I have uploaded a video shooting a *leaf* at 153 yds with my Sig P322/romeo zero elite, loaded with cheap bulk pack Remington Golden bullet ammo. My CCW gun does not have a dot, but my homestead P322, where I may have to make long shots, you bet it has a dot. Just 5 days ago I shot a possum at 50yds at night with my P322. That said, you better be prepared to do THOUSANDS of presentations with a red dot if you are going to rely on one for defensive use. These are NOT for casual shooters who won't practice, and they DEFINITELY not for people who are going to buy a gun, shoot it once or twice, and put it in their nightstand drawer.

I've gone through 2 RMRs and both failed- one for the dot not holding zero and the other for a dim dot. Plus, taking off the optic to swap batteries was a HUGE PITA. I try to buy American when I can-- but I will always go with the better product regardless where it's made. Also, "Made in USA" doesn't mean the parts are all US- where does Trijicon get its glass and internal components from? I use a ChiCom made phone and a whole bunch of other stuff made overseas- I'm over it. In this case, I went to a Holosun 508T and never looked back. Tough as nails (watch Sage's review) and it hasn't shit the bed on me yet. It simply is the better optic (ie. better reticle, shake awake, solar back-up and NOT HAVING TO TAKE OFF THE OPTIC TO SWAP THE BATTERY) at a much more affordable price point. Trijicon needs to keep up and not rest on its SOCOM approved laurels cuz the competition is eating their lunch. As for closed emitters- they fail too. My buddy had a Steiner with a screw that had come loose rattling inside the optic and an ACRO fog up inside coming in from the rain on his duty guns. None of these things are fool proof.

I have 2 Holosun optics I bought a few years ago when the prices were still somewhat reasonable. I paid $220 including tax and shipping for a 507K, which I would probably pay again. I just saw that Holosun is trying to charge $370 for the 507 Comp, and over $400 for the EPS Carry. At those prices, I'll absolutely go with Trijicon or Aimpoint from now on. I can't believe they're trying to sell Chinese made optics for those prices.
@mooktemas6800 Жыл бұрын
I have two 507C and one 509T and I paid $310 and $429 for them because I prefer the optic to all the other options for personal reasons. Money wasn’t the issue. I believe holosun makes very good optics .
@SMS2884 Жыл бұрын
Because when a company knows they are good then they can start charging reasonable prices for their products. Holosun is just as good as trijicon. Window size is better and nothing beats an acss Vulcan reticle. Just because it's Chinese is a ridiculous and childish reason. By that logic you don't own a smartphone or half the stuff normal people have.

Great review brother. The only thing you didn't mention is the benefits of cost differences and "Brand recognition markup." The Defender-CCW™ Red Dot while new to the race is also the lowest cost optic in your lineup by nearly 50% less from the most expensive. This is unfortunately a deciding factor for many many shooters now that we are in a Bidenomics hyper-inflation situation and people are having to choose between food and gas. It was a no brainer for me on my new Canik Mete to go with the Defender-CCW™ Red Dot at a mere $229 off of amazon. That and I wanted at least 3 MOA so I could flip it to a carbine for a 45deg canted backup if that situation/need should ever arise. But back to my point...the cost factor begs the question. Is the Trijicon RMRcc reeeeally $300 more valuable? I mean really? If so...why? I personally don't think so. I think Brand recognition markup is in effect.
@CrimeVid Жыл бұрын
Of course it is worth the $300 if your use is serious, not if you are playing around on the range, but if I were a soldier or a Swat team member I would want the best I could get. If you are really asking did it cost that much more to manufacture, of course not, but that is not your business. You make your choice on proposed use and how important that is to you and others (family perhaps ?).

My Samsung S23 was assembled in Vietnam (communist country) but owned by a South Korean company. Both Vietnam and South Korea are definitely not Chinese allies. New Samsungs will assembled in India, a democracy. I buy a lot Samsung, LG, ASUS, Toshiba, or Sony products to move my money away from China to US allies. No Motorola, no Lenovo. If you buy an LG flat panel in the US there is a decent chance it is made in Alabama of all places. Something to think about.

I was leaning heavily towards the Holosun 509 until you introduced the Vortex Defender, I wholeheartedly agree an enclosed emitter is the way to go, but including training on the clearing of debris from an open emitter isn’t off the table. Unfortunately the guys I help out are set in their ways, but maybe I can sway them into adding a red dot. I went to a carbine/pistol class and the instructor mentioned a 45yd head shot with a pistol, I said not without a red dot and answered my own question as to whether or not to have irons or red dot… the benefit of the Vortex is it lists the M18/M17 as compatible, so that is a positive! The Glocks, in particular the 19x would have to be cut to MOS. And like you said the Vortex comes with a plethora of different mounting screws.

Sure I’d agree with that, however, Holosun is proven brand (lots of the other non American brands are complete cheap garbage) that tonssss of people trust their life with and for good reason too. The other thing I want to mention is this, every single person who says this has hundreds of things in their home and on their person that’s made in China or other cheap labor countries. So you are lying to yourself if you think you are not supporting certain Chinese companies, whether or not you think they are funding spy balloons.
