17:00 So you guys paused at a very important part and picking it back up, I'm not sure if you caught what Light actually did. Raye didn't know the identities of the other agents but he DID know the name of his superior. So Light had him write his superior's name in the first block and in the death note wrote "Send an email to all your agents with the faces and identities of each agent," which is why Raye was asking "If he already had the identities, why does he need me?" Genius play.
@apoorvjoshi23833 ай бұрын
Yes, adding to that. Raye and others dont know that "name + face" is the requirement. While he indeed hesitated, he did end up writing the real names mainly because he thought without their faces, they ll be safe. But what he did not realize, was that he himself could see their faces and names in the file, thus completing the requirement for deathnote to activate. As if this was not enough, light made their boss send the same file to every agent, thus making sure that Raye wasnt the only one who got it(i mean then it would highlight Raye's case who was tailing Light)...and then Off'ed them all at once.

I don't think he's dismissing her input because "I should be the only one thinking in this household, so go make some kids", but more about worrying about her getting dragged into shit he thinks will put her in jeopardy. @anisecandy31083 ай бұрын
Not exactly disagreeing with the subs making it worse, but the thing is that Tsugumi Oba has a not great track record when it comes to writing women or talking about them in their mangas. Like, they have a pattern with them. I think most examples would include spoilers... But Bakuman, for one, has at the beginning a scene, where the main characters talk about one girl being smarter than another one, because she instinctively know that in order to be attractive she has to be nice and cute and keep her grades average and her dream of becoming an actress is another proof of that, because it's a dream popular among girls, and quote (I have the Polish translation of the manga, so I'm translating it in English myself, the wording won't be an exact match with the English version) "She knows, she was born to be happy as a beautiful wife by her man's side"
@idiosyncrasy77033 ай бұрын
@@anisecandy3108 I'm not arguing that this series, or anime in general, have pretty degrading tropes when it comes to women. Cue a montage of the countless fanservice scenes in 90% of fantasy/isekai anime out there. Lol. I get that, and I'm not refuting that it's a recurring pattern within the media. But that shouldn't change the fact that this specific scene isn't anything worse than a husband worrying about his retired wife getting into trouble with a global mass murderer. She seems to have not let go of being an agent despite having retired already, and that habit of hers was a valid concern for Raye as he doesn't want her to get involved with the Kira case. And it's not like his worries were unwarranted, because (as we'll see in the next episode) both Raye and Naomi should've quit the FBI way sooner. Lol Edit: fiance, my bad they weren't married yet as Raye was in Japan specifically to ask for her family's approval.
@anisecandy31083 ай бұрын
@@idiosyncrasy7703 See, I think that in a vacuum you're right about this scene. But that's why I wanted to bring the wider context into it. If, for example... There were some female characters in the police, also working to catch Kira, then Naomi's decision to leave the FBI and stay out of danger to have kids would read as purely character choice specific to her (also, I want to clarify that there's nothing wrong with putting having family above work btw). But with all of the women in Death Note being defined by their relationships to men and in general not matching them in competence, the only woman who is as competent as men leaving her job that she was great at and clearly cared a lot about to become a wife and have kids... (and having the plot develop around her the way it did...) Seems to reveal the author's biases. I'm not saying that it should be read as sinister or sth. Just that it can read different on the meta level than on the purely textual.

Little disheartened at all the people in the comments dismissing Sarah's observations on Raye's attitude to Naomi. I've watched a lot of reactors watch Death Note and pretty much every single one of them has come to the same conclusion regarding Raye (That being that he's not a bad guy but is a little bit sexist) if so many people are reaching the same conclusion then perhaps it's not a bad take but rather an issue with how the show has framed the scene. There might be subtlties that are lost in the translation from Japanese to English but I'd say with the way the scene is shot, the lighting used and the camera angles used, they all help create a sense that Raye is being dismissive of Naomi's opinions, even if he loves her a lot there's a palpable sense of friction between the two. If Naomi and Raye's decision to start a family really was one born out of love then I think the dialogue and flow of the scene needed to be altered to reflect that. I mean compare the family meetings that the Yagami household have compared to Raye and Naomi's talk? Still, I don't think it's a bad depiction at all. I'm sure there are lots of people out there in relationships similar to Raye and Naomi's, where the two do love each other but there are aspects of their personalities that cause issues between them. In that way, Raye and Naomi feel very human in their depiction and of course, neither of them deserved being condemned to death by Light.

I'm not sure how you feel about musicals, but at this point I think it is worth pointing out that there was a pretty decent Death Note musical produced in Japan. There is even a demo of some of the songs performed in English for a Broadway version of it (although it never went anywhere). I bring this up because there is a decent song in it that summarizes Light in this episode crossing the line. I mean, he already did, but this is the final nail in the coffin. It was a duet between Light and his father. I can't remember when it took place, but it was around this point in the anime. It's called "There are Lines". Here is the English version of the song: kzbin.info/www/bejne/o6TLd2OIlJuEgM0 There are no spoilers in that song, but note that some of the other songs WILL spoil you. The very beginning of the musical itself also contains spoilers. That said, the musical doesn't follow the anime exactly, some characters are changed a little, and it completely changes the ending. Currently, the other songs that don't have spoilers include: 1. "Where is the Justice" (kzbin.info/www/bejne/Y3SzeH56eK6FitE) 2. "Hurricane" (kzbin.info/www/bejne/lWHKfqltpdeVoMU) The other songs will spoil characters and/or plot either in the image or lyrics. But if either of you are a big fan of musicals, I could try posting the ones you can listen to spoiler free each episode. Oh! And on the topic of the musical, it is worth mentioning that Japan actually produced some live action movies for Death Note (unrelated to the awful Netflix "adaptations"). They were actually pretty good. Like the musical, it makes a number of changes (big and small). But it could be worth checking out when you're caught up on the anime.

He didn’t belittle her suspicions, nor did he imply that she was wrong. All he did was remind her that she promised not to get involved with the Kira case. People die very mysteriously in this case, and she’ll be having his kids in the near future so he’s extra concerned about her safety. He also doesn’t want her to stress about a case that she isn’t involved in, as she isn’t in the FBI anymore. I genuinely didn’t see a single disrespectful or derogatory remark in that entire conversation, and his wife clearly reflected that.

@@transientanus Nobody says that Light isn't lucky... he's. But saying that he's JUST lucky, but dumb, is dumb. The other user was right. You understimates him. Of course ep. 6 and 7 are ALL a BIG lucky trip for him. But that's not always the case. For example, you didn't get what he did in this episode. He wasn't LUCKY abut "the girlfriend". He was subtle, first saying "Your family" and "All who you love". Taye was stupid to say "How do you know about HER?". But to be in that situation, of course, you can't think clearly, since you KNOW you've a killer behing you that can kill you in an instant. So Light, one has heard "Her", knows that the first person who comes acroos Raye's mind, the person he loves the most, presumebily, is a woman. Now, Raye is 30-something years old. It's very LIKABLE (even if not sure) that he's talking about his wife, or his fiance, or maybe his daughter. It's LESS likeable, but not IMPOSSIBLE, that's he's talking about his mother, his sister, his gandma or his female best friend. So, Light makes A DEAL. He put his fiches on which he thinks it's the more PROBABLE (but not certain) right answer: "Yes, I know about HER (generic)." and then, later: "Your GIRLFRIEND will be dead. And also all of your family". Light wanna to threaten Raye, costantly, and not giving him the time to thinking coldly. He wants to scare him. So Raye falls for it. Even because a girlfriend is pratctically the same thing as a fiancé. Was Light LUCKY that Raye would not realize Light was trolling him? Yes, a little (the calculated the PROBABILITY). Was he dumb? No, in any way, no. In the worst scenario, if Raye was like "No, you don't know anything, I don't have a girlfreind!" and tried to catch him, Light would have simply written his name on the Death Note's fragment he has in his pocket. Please notice that Light keeps his hands inside his pocket ALL THE TIME, until Raye don't go outside the Yamanote Line. Because he really is afraid that something couldn't work. He probably have already wrote "RAYE PENBA" on the Death Note's scrap, and has only to write an "R" to kill Raye. What confuses me the most is: how did Light know that Raye would have been on that Underground Station that day, at that time? It's unlikable that he has tracked down Raye Penbar, who's a trained FBI Agent. But maybe he already wrote on the Death Note "THE DAY X, AT THE TIME Y, RAYE PENBAR WALKS INTO THIS STATION, MEET KIRA, FOLLOW ALL HIS INSTRUCTIONS, AND THEN DIE AT THE TIME Z IMMEDIATELY AFTER LEAVING THE TRAIN". Did you think about all this at all?

I'm not justifying Light (I am, I watched this show when I was a teenager and I was easily impressed by morally ambiguios characters) BUT he's basically doing what they will do to him. Death penalty exists and what if they decide it's justice to kill him? Now is kill or be killed, for me it's fair game between the police vs Kira.

.....It's kill or be killed because he's a MURDERER. Seek help.

@@transientanus It's an anime/manga and just an opinion, who hurt you?

@@OsSas3 Yes and your opinion shows that you're a low quality person. Your logic here is so ridiculous that it's clear you weren't burdened by an overabundance of schooling.

@@OsSas3 Also liking your own comments is just ADORABLE. Yes, it's an anime. But we aren't talking about the anime. We are talking about your opinion. "Innocent people are fair game because i may be caught for my crimes." Take a good hard look at yourself and seek help.

@@transientanus I'm sorry that I'm able to differentiate between real life and a show and not taking an stranger's opinion to heart. Don't worry, you'll figure out the internet at some point. Take care.
