The goaltending of that team was not it ngl. If you picked like swayman or another goalie for your like 8th pick, then you could have probably gone further.

You should do this but then see who builds a better team. Let the AI GM pick from the exact same spot, and then simulate and then run it back but this time you make the picks.

yikes 😂. also you checked the wrong stats. Sabres finished 6th in standings, 3rd in GF, 25th in GA (as you expected)
