Altitude training takes several weeks, and increases concentration of hemoglobin. And typically the effect lasts a couple of weeks. Altitude training is legal according to WADA, and I would be surprised if most pros don't avail themselves.

It’s time to stand up to the UCI properly GCN, your platform matters. Muriel lay dying on the side of the road for an hour and a half before she was found with a serious head injury, found by pure chance. She was passed by every race official, every medic, every support car, and the broom wagon. She had a race transponder, and a head unit with her, and still no one realised. It took 2.5 hours to get her to a hospital that was THREE minutes away. THREE. Deaths in cycling are always tragic, but something of an inevitability. This one was not. This one puts blood directly on the hands of the UCI, and makes me sick.

I would argue it's not just down to the UCI. It's down to all the stakeholders to determine what safety really looks like in cycling as a sport. It's such an easy word to speak of yet it's such a different thing to get right and manage effectively. The UCI cannot directly manage safety - they can only set the requirements to create a safe sport. Such a tragic outcome and this should shock the sport just like other industry failures. Yes, its a sport with high risk and thus the medical response to any accident should be sh*t hot. The fact that Muriel lay undetected for so long was catastrophic.

You get the feeling that Pog is in the zone from a life, family and 'work' perspective. IMHO this probably means more than any training protocol or equipment gains. A relaxed and focused metal state is one of the benefits. It would be great to get Mr Merckx' view on this, as some of his legacy videos seem to show a fully supportive and relaxed family life, obviously as well as training more than any other pro at the time. 👍

He definitely could be giving false information, but I’ve seen research that shows professional endurance athletes have much higher and broader zone 2s because it’s really about where your burning the most amount of fat before your body starts burning mainly carbs for energy. I highly doubt he hasn’t had a fat max test in a world class facility, so if true, his body could just be so adapted that he doesn’t really have a zone 3.

Some people have surmised that Pogacar's good form this year has come from more intensity of training. However, I can't help wonder if Inigo San Milan is right on the money when he says that building the mitochondrial engine is what's important. I reckon 340 watts zone 2 *by itself* is going to win some races simply because it vastly reduces the amount of time you spend out of zone 2. If you also consider that it will be constantly sparing carbohydrates, coupled with taking in 120 grams of carbs per hour, there is going to be a *lot* left in the tank when the hard efforts start. The main question for me, though, is this monstrous Z2 power *all* genetic or are there some lessons to be learned from the training techniques. Long Z2 rides to heart rate for the win? How much intensity do you need to increase the power ceiling? And is it possible that since Pogacar doesn't like turbo training sessions, is the off-on nature of his hilly training actually an unintentional component of his success? It would be interesting to try 20 minutes of high Z2 followed by 5 minutes of basically nothing over and over and over again to see if it had a beneficial effect.

Re any comparison of riders from different eras, it would be interesting to hear about the training and racing and lifestyle conditions of the year Eddy got his triple vs. Tadej today. And Stephen Roche, too, the '80s which were edging toward the future while still being very much that blue-collar old school. And I'm not fussing about the King's crowning of Tadej as best, just that the scenes half a century ago for Eddy and four decades ago for Stephen were different mountains to climb to get those triples, so was it the same or easier or harder or not really open to a fair comparison. And then there's the issue of injured competitors, Greg LeMond was not there in '87 and Tadej's top rivals were injured earlier this season. And whatever the outcome, all interesting to consider, even if the King has already handed the crown to Tadej as the greatest bicycle racer the world has ever known.

Also - a lot of IM athletes are also probably on "something more than carbs" with two high profile names being caught in the last two years, and more studies coming out showing a lot of amateurs are doping too.
