Agreed, after 45 years and over 20 countries fished I've avoided dams like the plague...until, in South Africa 2001 on a farmers dam on my tod with a leopard in view (albiet sleeping!) I hooked a +6kg rainbow who blew me away for at least 15mins. We became good mates and lived to fight another day.

@TAOutdoors7 жыл бұрын
Its a Florida "flats" hat.I used it flyfishing for Bonefish in the Bahamas,Florida,Seychelles etc.The long peak shuts more light out so you can spot the fish better,and I have some with a neck flap of cloth to cover ears and neck from sunburn. Best to take it off when you run the flats boat though,the long peak catches the wind !!.

In my part of Canada they roll up to a particular body of water with a truck holding a plastic container holding hundreds of small fish and just pump them in through a large hose. These trout are godlike giants compared to the small fish we get.

I fished a couple of these types of fisheries in Ireland and caught a rainbow of 6lb and he fought like a devil for about 10 minutes. It still wasn't as good as catching a wild brown trout of 1/3 the size in a river as a wild brown will jump and shake his head like crazy and will fight right up to the end. I release just about all of my fish as I hate to kill them. When I want to eat fish now I go to a fish mongers. In these manmade put & take fisheries it's fine to keep fish as they're not wild and are artificially raised and overfed. They aren't as well proportioned as wild fish - Those rainbows didn't look natural to me, way too fat.

Remember to use figure of 8 retrieve if you want to fish your flies without movement, because it allows you to keep in touch with your fly and if you will be able to feel any takes to the fly. If there are curves in your leader, then you won't feel a take

I've seen ponds bigger than that, it was a bit, 'shooting fish in a barrel'.
@TAOutdoors7 жыл бұрын
The trout are grown on in "stew" or "stock" ponds,then released into lakes.There must be thousands of fisheries like this in the UK,its just how our fishing works,though the majority would not all have really big trout. Or we have larger reservoirs,but again,the average fish size would be a lot smaller. I would love to have cascading mountain rivers where I could wade and flyfish for 15lb wild Steelhead trout,but here in the UK it just isn't available. We have to fish for whatever we can.

i am told that fly fishing is akin to hunting the fish out - unlike other types of fishing where you are waiting for them - ATB
@TAOutdoors7 жыл бұрын
Yes,there is the difference between "hunting" the fish,or "trapping" them by casting out a bait and waiting.Not just trout,but many fish.I personally like the hunting,mobile approach,but some species just respond better to the waiting game. Like the big carp scene.

I'm sorry to go against the grain but I find this sort of "trout fishing' grotesque. Those fish have abnormal girth for their length; they're not natural. And as for 'blue' trout and 'tiger' trout: what abominations. No, I'll take wild trout fishing any day even if anything over 2lbs is rare.

Fishery rules on most put-and-take Trout fisheries...No fish to be returned...I personally would like to see them returned,as you can only eat so much trout meat.However while Trout up to about 3lbs seem to survive Ok,the big fish do not...I think it will eventually come round whereby you could pay a day ticket,catch and keep say two trout,then fish on as catch-and-release.

Are these fish sterile? I hope so because eventually all non indigenous species find their way into natural waterways usually creating more harm than good. The odd Thames Carp was an exciting bonus 20 years ago now they are beginning to take over and change the habitat at certain places on the river. I disliked the 'rats in a barrel' Carp lakes that cropped up all over the place 20 years ago, whatever happened to natural coarse fishing? It's like everyone today wants instant gratification. Sorry I love your sea, coarse and river fly fishing but just cannot get excited about this stuff.
