You can download the presentation slides for this lesson from my Stan Store: stan.store/TagalogTimePat
In this Tagalog lesson, we will learn how to make simple sentences in the present tense. We will learn the different types of Tagalog verbs and how they are conjugated into different forms, depending on the context of the conversation. We will also learn how to use subject and possessive pronouns in different types of Tagalog sentences. We will practice what we learn by doing example questions. Then, we will learn a useful "Tag-lish" tip, which you can use even if you don't know how to say a verb in Tagalog.

I speak natively Javanese and Indonesian. What I find interesting is that Tagalog looks very similar to Ancient Javanese vocabulary- and structure-wise.Tagalog still retains the so-called Austronesian allignment system which is now lost in Javanese/Indonesian due to the heavy influence of Sanskrit, Arabic and European languages. Anyway thank you so much for these lessons Mrs. Pat which have successfully given me a deeper understanding of Tagalog grammar and its affixation system (which is as complicated as its Malay/Indonesian counterpart). 😁🙏🙏

These are exceptionally helpful and valuable instructional videos. Salamat! My father was Kampampangan and spoke Ilocano as well as Tagalog. Sadly I learned nothing. 😢 Here I am at 51 learning what I can. My goal is to one day be able to read my Tagalog version of Noli Me Tangere (yes I know Josë Rizal wrote the original in Castilian, and it was only later translated into Tagalog.) Anyway, thank you very much for this incredible work you are doing! 🙏🏾 #kapwa

Thanks to your videos and especially this one, i finally start to see some light in the tunnel. I am sure there are some differences in grammar between Tagalog and Bisaya, but at least i found some solid ground now (and might end up speaking Bisalog or Tagaya)

I asked Ai to solve why some words are categorized and how to know when to use them. This what I got MAG Verbs: Formation: MAG verbs start with the prefix “mag-.” Actor-Focus: These verbs emphasize the person doing the action. Usage: MAG verbs are used for actions in the future and imperative forms. Examples: Magluto (to cook) - “I will cook.” Magsulat (to write) - “Write!” MA Verbs: Formation: MA verbs begin with the prefix “ma-.” Actor-Focus or Object-Focus: They can focus on either the subject or the object. Actor-Focus: The action happens to the subject (e.g., “fall asleep”). Object-Focus: The action affects the object (e.g., “get wet”). Usage: MA verbs are used for various tenses. Examples: Natulog (slept) - “I slept” (subject-focused). Bilhin (to buy) - “Buy it” (object-focused). UM Verbs: Formation: UM verbs incorporate the infix “-um-” after the first consonant. Actor-Focus: These verbs emphasize the subject as the doer of the action. Usage: UM verbs are typically used for actions in the past tense. Examples: Sumulat (to write) - “I wrote.” Kumain (to eat) - “I ate.” IN Verbs: Formation: IN verbs have the infix “-in-” within the verb root. Actor-Focus or Object-Focus: They can focus on either the subject or the object. Usage: IN verbs are used for various tenses. Examples: Sulat (to write) becomes Sinulat (wrote). Bili (to buy) becomes Binili (bought). I Verbs: Formation: I verbs have the infix “-i-” within the verb root. Actor-Focus or Object-Focus: They can focus on either the subject or the object. Usage: I verbs are used for various tenses. Examples: Takbo (to run) becomes Tumakbo (ran). Laban (to fight) becomes Lumaban (fought).

In Tagalog we usually indicate the subject even in imperative sentences. In English it's ok to say "Wash the dishes," implying that the subject is "you" But Tagalog, you need to indicate the subject to make it a complete sentence. (Hugasan mo ang pinggan.)

Hi Pat - great stuff well explained in an entertaining manner 👍 So I went and wanted to apply this to the verb "inom" (drink) and it never worked out. Apparently, there are exceptions that make things real complicated. I think you rightfully try to keep it simple, but please mention that there are irregular verbs that have real complex rules based on the initial character, the vowel or consonant that follows, etc. and whether or not you are thinking of adding a lesson or clip for that or refer to a video that handles it. If you already did, apologies - I must have missed it. So, after quite some research, I learned that inom (drink) becomes UM-inom --> uminom (to drink) and for present tense you repeat the initial vowel after "UM" and it becomes UM-I-inom -> umiinom, For past tense you only add the word after the "UM" --> uminom and for the future tense you just double the initial vowel --> iinom (Pat, please correct me if I'm wrong here) Keep on doing the great work you do. Congrats!

As an example of what I’m referring to would be phrases/questions like; “Where is the hospital?” “Where is a gas station?” “Compliments to the chef.” “Can you give me directions?” “How much does that cost?” Thanks again and keep the videos coming. I listen to them while I’m awake and while I’m sleeping 😁

In the example of Taglish magdrive, the Tagalog version magmaneho is really not pure Tagalog because maneho is derived from Spanish word manejo which also means to drive. So magmaneho is another example of conjugating a foreign derived word to make it Tagalog just the same as Taglish magdrive. That said, it is generally understood by Filipinos that maneho is purely a Tagalog word.

You should've explained why we are using a street conversation like "Nagluluto ako" instead of the grammatically correct "Ako ay nagluluto". The latter may sound archaic but it's the grammatically correct one.
@edrinabrigo923
@edrinabrigo923 4 ай бұрын
I think when used in the latter format, it sounds more like, the "I am _____" used in self- identity like you would use in say your name or profession. "my identity is the act of cooking" is what it feels like that is translated to.

Even your screen says this is a MAG verb. However, when you actually conjugate it you use NAG not MAG. Can you explain the use of NAG vs MAG as the affix?

I am still in US, but go back and forth and find my Spanish helps me so much in PH. I like your Japanese/PH video too, this subject I know well, but many do not know about this even in USA-you are correct. My grandfather fought in PH in WWII in 44-45 in the US Navy on USS Karnes. He was enver the same coming home and I knew him personally and he told me stories which I later found out were true. MASSIVE combat, a lot of US blood lost retaking PH land for sure. I can give an explanation for the I- verbs at least. The prefix ‘i-‘ is used as a benefactive marker, meaning the verb is done FOR something or someone. That essentially means that it’s an afterthought, and that you’re doing the ‘-in-‘ conjugation and then adding the prefix afterwards. That’s all I’ve got for now
