Johan Klopper is an extremely common South African sir-name. Do not be confused. There are more than one Johan Kloppers in the 4wd industry, that are not the one mentioned in this story.

Love your stories. I've been overlanding for over 25 years and a lesson learnt early on was who I travel with. These days it is mostly just me and my wife. So I've built my 4x4 to be completely self sufficient. If I do travel with friends it will be a a very select few who I've known for a while. There are others I call good friends, but not people I would travel with though. To them overlanding is getting to the destination, not about the journey. They have no idea what they are missing no matter how hard I try to explain to them. So bugger them, I will not tour with them :)

Im from NSW and i just bought a new Mitsubishi Pajero Sport Exceed, i bought it because i believe its the best value for its money and cheaper end of scale to start touring with my family once we have enough money to buy camping gear. I am willing to lend you the vehicle to review if you ever come passed NSW. I really appreciate all your content provided and its motivating me even more to explore Australia.

Brilliant story. Camping with non-campers can be just as infuriating. I camped with friends who had a borrowed tent. He lost his mind because the tent was broken, but after he spent the night sleeping under wet canvas he discovered it was just inside out. Too bad the tent pegs had already been driven through the canvas because he couldn't find where the pegs were meant to go. Best trip ever.

So true. As long as your independent the risk of a ruined trip is much less. Even if everyone is getting along, being independent for long trips is nice so that you can split up at times if you need or want to. For example, if you want to spend an extra day at a beach, while the other traveler wants to go to an archeological site you're not interested in, you can each do what you want and then meet at the next campsite. It's good to have the option at least.

It's too bad you've had bad experiences traveling with others. Having watched your videos for years it feels like we have been traveling with you -- it's a testament to your story telling. After a new video is posted, I usually think about my own travels, camps, routes, etc. that I would want to share and the places I've "visited" through your stories that I would otherwise know nothing about.

That's epic. In all honesty, though... having watched pretty much everything you've made in the past few years, I can safely say that you do have a bit of a personality. And that's not in a negative way. But I can imagine that in the company of other strong characters, there might be potential for a bit of a clash... But Johan Klopper needs to go take a long walk on a short pier.

Similarly tag-along tours with more than 4 vehicles tend to be a pain, there is a greater chance of some in the entourage having personality issues, having a prima-donna in the group, or someone not being happy with the itinerary, and of course the statistical chance of someone having a vehicle problems increases with the number of vehicles, this really kicks in once past 4 vehicles on a long bush trip. Big groups slow down border crossings, and make organising anything, or diverting from the itinerary, an embuggerance. 2-3 vehicles, to my mind, is optimum.

I learned this lesson myself one time going camping with a good friend who took one of his friends with. the friend of a friend said he would bring food for everyone as a nice gesture for us taking him with. they left the day before me I met them there in the morning and brought only a 12 pack of soda when I showed up my soda almost instantly disappeared that's when I found out the food was gone already from one meal. I went fishing so me and my daughter could eat lunch and they drove to town to get food. ever since then I never leave without everything I need and when someone says ill bring whatever so you don't need to I say ok sounds good and then bring it anyways.
