Very interesting comment about identifying as a New Zealander and not as PI. I was born and raised here too but I wouldn't call myself just kiwi, I am predominantly Samoan because that's where my parents are from. It seems hypocritical to claim yourselves as just NZers and yet continue to rake in the benefits of PI schemes, awards and programmes.

The fact that he changed his name back to the cultural name because it was a 'political' move made me quite sad. You can see the emotion of regret shown on her face as she hears them speak about calling themselves only kiwi. I respect the mother as she shaped them into smart educated and succesful people but also at the cost of sacrificing the culture of her people and you can totally see that disconnection

My first time seeing this, the kids made me uncomfortable, almost saying the papa'a way made them better people, better than other Kuki's, I felt like the kids didnt identify with been polynesian/Kuki Airani but did enjoy the benefits.
