A very underappreciated film with the filmography of Nicolas Roeg. His films will never find the large acclaim of a Spielberg, Coppola, Scorcese, etc. and they are destined (perhaps even doomed) to be embraced by a niche audience who do appreciate his style and brazen use of images. I think the film loses a bit of energy once it gets to the trial sequence, but everything preceding it is fascinating. Roeg was unashamed about confusing the audience and oftentimes created this cinematic jigsaw puzzle that more pieces missing. This is what I believe keeps them fresh ,and into those missing places we project our own interpretations. Eureka is probably among his more linear works but it still has a lot of those flashes of the old Roeg style that leapt about, untethered to any sense of time or conventional cinematic grammar. His films are unique, although we certainly see the influences of Richard Lester, especially in his own his Petulia.

I remember seeing Gene Hackman interviewed during the making of the movie. He was made up as the character in the latter stages of his life. Not realising this, I thought something like "God, Gene Hackman's gotten really old cooking. I also would dispute Mayersberg's claim that Orson Welles was depressed, ot whatever word he used, because he never reached the heights of Kane again. Although i would make a case for Other side of the Wind. Still that was a movie finished by others.

@@irish66Mayersberg is just quoting Welles himself, who said he started at the top and worked his way down to the bottom. I watched an interview once with Welles with him almost in tears umpiring people not to become a filmmaker because if the troubles he had faced.

@@curiositytax9360 Oh, really. ok. i guess he just put on a brave face a lot of the time. Do you have a link to the interview you mentioned?

@@curiositytax9360 Thankls. Saw befofore, watched again. Didn't see any part where he is "almost in tears umpiring people not to become a filmmaker because if the troubles he had faced." He does say he "Started at the top, worked his way down". But it is reference to the time he was in Dublin and lied to them about having appeared on the american stage. It had nothing to do with Kane.

Does anybody know if this is the 'interviews with Paul Mayersberg & Jeremy Thomas' that are promoted as extras on the new bluray release of the film ?
@TaggleElgate6 жыл бұрын
No, the interviews on the Blu-ray are different (being recorded in 2015) and longer (Mayersberg 53:18 mins and Thomas 13:35 mins)

TaggleElgate, thank you for your response, & upload .i find Eureka a very frustrating film as it has a great director,an interesting cast ,a fascinating character it's based on etc. But after a good beginning for all the 'symbolism' & allusions for me it feels like a TV movie & doesn't really deliver -
