Kind of wish you didn’t just include Xenoblade. The Franchise started way back with Xenogears in 1998. Then after that we had Xenosaga on the PS2 between 2002-2006. Also Xenoblade wasn‘t meant as a Xeno titles originally but later Games leaned more into it. While all 3 Xeno series are owned by different companies, they‘re still sort of connected and most players consider them as one large Franchise Also SMT wasn‘t the first Monster collector and the beginning of the series, it was Atlus’ Megami Tensei on the Famicom (NES) which was based on a trilogy of Novels. SMT released a few years later and then became the cornerstone of the larger Megami Tensei Franchise (the Shin in Shin Megami Tensei literally meaning „True“)
@EhurtAfy3 ай бұрын
Yeah for this kind of informational video, I agree on the Xeno terminology. At the same time, Xenoblade Chronicles is responsible for about 74% of Xeno series sales and there's been no good Xenosaga games for 20 years. There are simply too many newer 100+ hour JRPGs to play and especially for people under 30 years old, anything older than Xenoblade Chronicles is a hard sell so I can understand not even mentioning it

8:40 well actually.. the travel log you tlak about is also a more modern feature of the Ys series. Infact, it wasn't a thing pre Ys 7 iirc, where the storyline was always revolving around the Eldeen and how they disappeared from the surface, which led Adol ever since the first game around to look to help the people he mets along the way, from simple retrieving of some jewelry, to some flowers up to silver bells or rings and wands that let you transform for example into a Roo for puzzle solving for example (and or worldbuilding) or casting magic that helps Adol on his journey. As much as I am happy you mention the somewhat known bump combat: I kinda wish you had mentioned the pre team fight oriented hack & slash titles in the series, aka the ark engine or three swords combat titles which are Ys 3's remake, Ys 6 - Ark of Napisthim and Ys Origin, which also appear different to people due to the difficulty being quite higher in compare to what modern Ys games do to the player as modern combat, even on the highest difficulty setting, is either getting oneshotted or wannabe-Dark Souls, sadly (which happened due to the target demographic group being changed as the originally PC focused company Falcom has gone into console game development due to japan's economy not really doing them any favors, see ZWEI2's poor sales for such an astonishing well crafted charming RPG where you also play as two characters basically at once).

While talking about Star Ocean, you could have also mentioned at the end of that segment that that series is actually connected, or was connected rather, to the Tales of Franchise due to Wolf team first working on ToP, getting disrupted by Namco and then leaving nearly completly with the whole team to create Tri-Ace with Enix (I might be wrong thereif Tri-Ace was created after but it's been a bit messy there) as a publisher so the reason why there are some similiar beats and themes and say cooking and other specifics that are usually very unusual in the RPG genre come up, then it is because of their relationship to the Tales of Franchise in the 90s.

6:20 Well well well, look who didn't do their homework properly. Like, at all! Let me be direct: FE1-3 play in the same world, infact, FE1 & 3 are part of ONE direct story just with a timeskip in it iirc. FE4 & 5 ALSO play in the same world and thus continue their story, infact FE5 plays inbetween events of FE4 with a different main character in another country, trying to get back to where he originally belonged to, since Leif, FE5's MC, was captured during the events of the first half of FE4. FE6 & FE7 ALSO play in the same world with a timeskip apart of 20 years because of a character in FE7 being pregnant and that character is 20 in FE6. And yes, FE6 is the sequel to FE7, dunno what happened there developmentwise that they switched it around. FE9 & FE10 aka the Tellius Saga has a 3 year timeskip where the King of Daein(?) has been slain and thus the land suffering from it's instability since then. FE11 & FE12 are FE1 & 3's remake with partway new content and some new gadgets around in terms of FE gamedesign development. Technically FE13 aka Awakening is also connected to the Akaneia Saga (FE1-3) but since there is a 2000 year old timeskip involved it is hardly necessary to get the full story in compare to most games that came before. All other games that have been released are standalone. Maybe FE Echoes: Shadows over Valencia decluded because that is the FE2 remake, but still. So basically only FE8 - The Sacred Stones, FE14 aka Fates in all three versions, FE16 - Three Houses & FE17 - Engage are the only standalone titles in the series. Next time please take a look at some continuity or ask fans if you are unsure about it, but don't spread misinformation like that Tag.

FE4 and 5 are also in the FE1-3 world, on a different continent and like 100 years before those games. Tear Ring Saga also takes place in it too, unofficially. Also I hate considering Awakening a part of the timeline since its story and worldbuilding feels like badly written fanfiction, lol

His description provides an explanation for his intent and goals in this video (if you wouldve read it). He made a good video summarizing a large chunk of the most popular jrpgs ever made for beginners. If you want a video giving information that anyone could get from a quick google search about games from your list (quite a few of which are more than fairly niche, haven't received a new installment for many newcomers entire lifespans, or never received much critical acclaim in the first place) then make your own video where you won't make abhorrent mistakes like putting a character who appears in a game series in said series' portrait.

@KrimsonKattYT3 ай бұрын
@@raidomegnuo2868Yeah Trails is like a sub-series of The Legend of Heroes which is far larger than what was original TLoH. The first TLoH was a spinoff of Falcom's "dragon slayer" series that spun off with its own thing with a trilogy of games on the PSP. The series we now know as Trails began with Trails in the Sky on the PSP, the 5th Legend of heroes game, and to add onto everything that series has had a ROUGH translation history.

@@Callie1444 it was good but he could have done better in my opinion, like him talking about how most of the battle gameplay isn't just simply mind numbing turn base combat but would focus more on character positioning(especially in the earlier games), could have talked about some of the systems that other jrpg's don't have such as kuro mixing action style and turn base combat and maybe even go over the history a little bit and talking about how the trails games are actually the sixth installment and a spin off of the much larger legend of heroes games which are also a spinoff of the dragon slayer games

Cool video. Very succinct and good for new comers. That's quite the ambitious title though. With so many fantastic JRPG series out there, it's a large undertaking to cover them all comprehensively in a short amount of time (notable omissions: Breath of Fire, Secret of Mana, Suikoden, etc). However, you did a great job for what you did cover. Well done.

Legend of Heroes Trails series is probably one of the only two (correct me if I'm wrong) series that is still running and continuing besides from Kingdom Hearts. A very long series to get into if you want to understand the whole story of different characters/perspective/continents in the same world. Like a really long anime with 500+ episodes that is still going and going and going. Iirc, the current installment (12th installments) just hits the 50% of the overall story, according to the game designer. And your breakdown of it was so... short and somehow precise 😂 It's my favorite series though.

I would've just recommended you put "active JRPG franchise" in the title as it would be a mostly clearer picture of the video, I say mostly because as much as I love Valkyria Chronicles I think we can sadly consider it done at the moment, as other comments mentioned the Mana series would've been a better candidate for it's place.

Changing genres from turn based to action based isnt an "evolution"....Its done to try and harvest more revenue from casuals. Both have ALWAYS existed. Theres no "evolving" at play. Turned based isnt some outdated problem that needs solving. Its a style to give full control over a group or even a retinue of characters in a much more detailed and deep way than just picking the one that feels right for your style and mashing away. Or circling a group and clicking on a target so the game can play for you ect. If anything, its a sleazy corporate ploy to switch from one to the other because they are after profits first, artform second. And this is apparent, as despite profits or lack thereof, people are STILL talking about classics like Fire Emblem 3 houses and Persona 5 and so forth, while Rebirth, which released this year, is barely hanging on to staying relevant. Its why Atlus had booted square enix right off their JRPG throne. And why Balders Gate 3 was such a huge success over a heap of action rpgs released in the same year. Because when you try to please everyone, you end up pleasing a very few. And no, when remade for "new audiences" most of the old audiences arent going to like the changes. Its why both Remake and Rebirth were so slammed and critiqued by classic fans. Original fans who couldnt put the first game down arent even completing the remakes. Just look at its statistics.....All while companies like SquareEnix continue to insist and gaslight players into the idea that these changes were for the better.

I stil have to play Trails into Reverie because doing quests on trails to azure is way too long . Tales of Arise is also the same and the story is super long especially if you keep doing more side quests . So much games to catch up on cuz I’ve been way too busy with work and other stuff .

Honestly a good rundown of the major ongoing JRPGs. I think the Kiseki section was a bit short, not even a description of the combat system was provided, but I guess that shows how the big appeal of the series is the interconnected story rather than the gameplay. Also, just seeing this list and not seeing series like Summon Night or Golden Sun makes me sad. Not cause the video didn't include it, but that it's practically dead franchises. I especially thought Golden Sun had the potential to go far.
