@@Jordan3DSyou realize that "rpg" means role playing game and not "turn based game"?
@Jordan3DS18 күн бұрын
@@cooltwittertag Action RPG and RPG might as well be too different genres with how dissimilar they are. RPGs aren't just turn based, but its a genre that requires some form of limitation on direct control of the characters in order to foster strategy over brute reflexes. If you can dodge roll and have 100% control of your character, then it's not an RPG. Xenoblade is an RPG, for example, but Final Fantasy XVI isn't.
@cooltwittertag18 күн бұрын
@@Jordan3DS you are describing strategy games now. All RPG means is that its a role playing game. The gameplay mechanics need to foster role playing (immersion through customization and upgrading your character). They do not need to be strategic or turn based. Game genres have an image problem because just like indie they are applied very broadly.
@Jordan3DS18 күн бұрын
@@cooltwittertag That hasn't been what the genre is solely about for decades now. Look at games like Paper Mario: Sticker Star. You have zero customization or character growth, but it has RPG combat so it's still an RPG. Likewise, something like Nier has levels and weapons you can equip but it's much more of an action game than an RPG. Through your definition, the genre is incredibly broad and basically has no meaning. It's like saying "Action games are just games that need to have a lot of action in them, so therefore Super Mario Sunshine is an action game!" I think you should have an idea of how a game plays based on its genre. If you label both something like Strangers of Paradise and Octopath Traveler solely as RPGs because they both have character customization, you're ignoring the fact that the experiences they provide aren't similar in the slightest. Whereas if you label a game a first person shooter, you have a solid idea of how the game plays and what it's like. On that note, imagine calling Zelda an FPS because you can go into first person and shoot the bow sometimes, it's just silly.

While talking about Star Ocean, you could have also mentioned at the end of that segment that that series is actually connected, or was connected rather, to the Tales of Franchise due to Wolf team first working on ToP, getting disrupted by Namco and then leaving nearly completly with the whole team to create Tri-Ace with Enix (I might be wrong thereif Tri-Ace was created after but it's been a bit messy there) as a publisher so the reason why there are some similiar beats and themes and say cooking and other specifics that are usually very unusual in the RPG genre come up, then it is because of their relationship to the Tales of Franchise in the 90s.

Kind of wish you didn’t just include Xenoblade. The Franchise started way back with Xenogears in 1998. Then after that we had Xenosaga on the PS2 between 2002-2006. Also Xenoblade wasn‘t meant as a Xeno titles originally but later Games leaned more into it. While all 3 Xeno series are owned by different companies, they‘re still sort of connected and most players consider them as one large Franchise Also SMT wasn‘t the first Monster collector and the beginning of the series, it was Atlus’ Megami Tensei on the Famicom (NES) which was based on a trilogy of Novels. SMT released a few years later and then became the cornerstone of the larger Megami Tensei Franchise (the Shin in Shin Megami Tensei literally meaning „True“)

6:30 A quick note for those interested in the Fire Emblem series; not every entry is standalone. There are some sequels, prequels, and even a midquel. Most are designed so that you can play them on their own, but if you want to play Game 4, Genealogy of the Holy War, unspoiled you should wait to play Game 5, Thracia 776, until afterward. The same goes for playing Radiant Dawn before Path of Radiance. If you want to avoid spoilers for older games in general you should wait to play the most recent entry, Engage. It was meant to be an anniversary celebration, so it pulled characters from across the series and explained their stories. This video's broader point about the series is mostly accurate; I just wanted to warn newcomers about the exceptions.

8:40 well actually.. the travel log you tlak about is also a more modern feature of the Ys series. Infact, it wasn't a thing pre Ys 7 iirc, where the storyline was always revolving around the Eldeen and how they disappeared from the surface, which led Adol ever since the first game around to look to help the people he mets along the way, from simple retrieving of some jewelry, to some flowers up to silver bells or rings and wands that let you transform for example into a Roo for puzzle solving for example (and or worldbuilding) or casting magic that helps Adol on his journey. As much as I am happy you mention the somewhat known bump combat: I kinda wish you had mentioned the pre team fight oriented hack & slash titles in the series, aka the ark engine or three swords combat titles which are Ys 3's remake, Ys 6 - Ark of Napisthim and Ys Origin, which also appear different to people due to the difficulty being quite higher in compare to what modern Ys games do to the player as modern combat, even on the highest difficulty setting, is either getting oneshotted or wannabe-Dark Souls, sadly (which happened due to the target demographic group being changed as the originally PC focused company Falcom has gone into console game development due to japan's economy not really doing them any favors, see ZWEI2's poor sales for such an astonishing well crafted charming RPG where you also play as two characters basically at once).

Marketing maybe? The newest origin collection comes with persona characters portraits. Also, there is no single most iconic character in the series anyway, so using Aegis' portrait is a sensible idea to attract more people.

Legend of Heroes Trails series is probably one of the only two (correct me if I'm wrong) series that is still running and continuing besides from Kingdom Hearts. A very long series to get into if you want to understand the whole story of different characters/perspective/continents in the same world. Like a really long anime with 500+ episodes that is still going and going and going. Iirc, the current installment (12th installments) just hits the 50% of the overall story, according to the game designer. And your breakdown of it was so... short and somehow precise 😂 It's my favorite series though.

They take on completely differently art styles yet love to reference the Disgaea series or even straight up have Crossover characters from the Disgaea series enter their games. The Mana series is fairly obscure with a cult following. It started as an action based Final Fantasy like before it transitioned into its new identity. All games have a plot surrounding a limited supply of mana, a tree that supplies the mana, a sword that acts as the conduit, someone dying by the end, usually a girl as a sacrificial offering, monsters that look cuddlier than basic Kirby enemies, and later on up to eight elements including the obscure moon and wood ones. Some earlier games featured local multi-player, spinoffs were hit-or-miss experimental variations of the usual formula, and the music is usually good on the ears overall. When Secret of Mana was being made, limited cart space led to alot of stuff being cut and pit into either the sequel or Chrono Trigger.
@Jordan3DS3 ай бұрын
Was it meant to be a FF, though? In Japan the series was always its own thing
@patricklatham38973 ай бұрын
@@Jordan3DS I was refering to the aesthetic and the references, right down to picking a stat change named after an FF1 class. The Dark Lord had the dark knight look. Julius' adventurer disguise was a red mage. Chocobos were still rideable in that game. You picked the stat buffs' Warrior Monk, Black Mage, and White Mage. The main character is basically the FF warrior in appearance and way of fighting. Until you get magic.

Honestly a good rundown of the major ongoing JRPGs. I think the Kiseki section was a bit short, not even a description of the combat system was provided, but I guess that shows how the big appeal of the series is the interconnected story rather than the gameplay. Also, just seeing this list and not seeing series like Summon Night or Golden Sun makes me sad. Not cause the video didn't include it, but that it's practically dead franchises. I especially thought Golden Sun had the potential to go far.
