My Christmas time alone in Mexico

I spent Christmas alone in Mexico by exploring the culture and tradition of this festive holiday in the heart of Mexico City
"Christmas is a big deal in Mexico"
Over 80% of Mexicans are Catholic, so Christmas in Mexico is an exceptionally popular holiday, even though i’m buddhist and in my country; Christmas is not technically an official public holiday due to over 90% of the population practice buddhism...
...However, As I currently stay in Mexico - I feel the hype of the Christmas season here, and I extremely want to enjoy this Mexican custom and tradition
I started off early in the morning by exploring the neighborhood that in stay in Mexico City and came across with street vendor who gave me Altole (traditional Mexican drink) for free then I headed to local market to see what is it like during Christmas. There, I tried Mexican traditional Christmas meal for the first time as a breakfast. At nighttime, of course; i went to downtown Mexico City, it was definitely an eye-opening experience.
I think i did my best to embrace the culture.
This video reveals the story on how I spend Christmas alone in Mexico and what i have learned from this experience,

I was in Mexico in December 2020. I was in Mexico City. At first I was able to eat indoors at restaurants. Used to go have breakfast at a cafe on the same block as my hotel. That all changed when only take- out was allowed. It was so nice to sit and have breakfast and be serenaded by a couple of men singing and playing guitars. Then it got worse. I wanted to visit the Aztec ruins of Teotihuacán. That was suddenly closed. Luckily the tour guide asked me if I'm interested in a trip to Taxco, a few hours drive through the mountain to the south. What a beautiful quintessential town. I still would like to go back to see the ancient ruins one day.

That is exactly what christmas is in mexico, family and friends. The 25th is quiet because everyone is at home with their family, very few go out to the streets, it's not a normal day, it's a day of family and friends 100%. I felt sad for you being alone there, but I am glad you had this experience as it's these the ones that open your eyes to the important things in life.

2:04 what you don't distinguish, is corn, actually is the central point of the atole, it is a corn drink, vanilla is not something essential, the base is corn but you can add any flavor to it, you bought the one with vanilla. You needed to see the "posadas", the most distinctive element of Mexican Christmas. Great video👍

Hi Tah!...same in Philippines, we celebrate on Christmas Eve, and just relaxing and spending time with family on Christmas day...we don't really care about Christmas gift...in fact we never had a Christmas gift, we focused more on sharing the meal together, laughing and dancing with the family....I was alone for quite some times now since I worked in the US and my family is in the Philippines...one day I will surprise my family on Christmas celebrations and we can be together...it's been my mother's wished for me to be home on Christmas 🎄

Happy Holidays! I spent Christmas alone too. My kids are with their mom (divorced) for Christmas. I have many friends from Mexico especially the southern areas. They cook meat with amazing sauces. Lots of hand-made tortillas cooked over a fire. Being alone during Christmas is always difficult. I've been watching you on KZbin for a few years. Nice to see you are still making videos and traveling. I had plans to visit the Philippines but the Covid shut all that down. Not being able to just buy a ticket and travel anywhere is really sad. So many restrictions.

Merry Christmas Tah. I too spent Christmas alone but did talk to my mom and will visit her later in the week. Christmas can be a very special time of the year even if your religion does not celebrate it. I am glad you had the chance to experience Christmas there and hope you enjoyed the experience. If you are in the Philippines Christmas starts in September. They consider all the ber months part of their Christmas celebrations and hoping next year I will get to experience that for myself. I too am learning that Christmas is so different in other countries, even yours. I just returned from Thailand a few days before Christmas and there was so many displays put up. I am sure it was for the expats and shoppers but it was a surprise. Many of my friends there seemed to have some celebration, but Thais tend to celebrate most anything anyway. I hope to return soon to continue my explorations and will explore other local customs. Hope you enjoyed Christmas there this year.

Happy Holidays Tah! I traveled one time alone during Christmas and I can say that I realized how much it is a celebration that is meaningful when we celebrate it with others. To me, just like for the Mexicans, it is part of my culture so the Christmas that I spent abroad in a country where it is not celebrated opened my eyes on the differences between cultures. I had mixed feelings because I knew that my family was celebrating at home but since it was like a normal day where I was, I didn't really feel sad neither. We also celebrate mostly on Christmas eve here in Canada. Most stores and restaurants are closed on Christmas day so everybody have time to visit their relatives.

Oh Tah! Are you staying in Plateros or Av. Centenario in Alvaro Obregon? I live in the other side of the ravine on Calz. de los Leones, If I had known you were here in the city, I would have been able to invited you to lunch with my family and I on December 25th. Tah, the orange building behind the atole stand is one of the best taquerias in the city "Las Brasas" I also recommend you a small family restaurant in a garage at Av. Centenario No. 187 it is meters from de atole stand, they make an excellent green chilaquiles.
